Lucy
"Hold on," David said. The car continued to swerve, but the sound of the bullets was muted as if he'd put up a protective barrier around the car. My heart was hammering in my chest.
We'll see who is petrified of who.
"She's talking to me," I gasped, panting as I tried to calm my heart."
"Yeah? Tell her to go fuck herself."
Tires screeched as he swung us around another corner.
"Almost--Wait." He hissed and slammed his hand on the console. "Abort."
"What?"
"It's a fucking trap," he said. "They're trying to get us to that portal, probably for an ambush. We'll take the long road."
"Alpha, are you certain?"
"Call it intuition."
I gasped, realizing that he had to have just had a vision. I glanced up at him and watched the light of his eyes ripple like the surface of a pond. He directed the Escort team to change course. The atmosphere inside the car was electric with tension as we headed toward the long road out of the city, but it didn't seem like they were letting up. I heard cars swerving, tires screeching, and the crunch of metal, but David just kept driving.
As the city's lights faded into the distance, I hoped that we were in the clear, but that didn't seem to be the case.
David sped up, and the bullets kept coming, growing more numerous.
"T-The tires?"
"Are fine," he said. "Deep breaths, Lucy."
I tried. The high-speed chase on the long road out of Hecate had escalated into a full-fledged battle. They were relentlessly following us. Adrenaline coursed through me. The car was bumped to one side from my side. David growled, and I heard something crunch and break from beyond my window.
My heart pounded in my chest as I watched, one after another, the Escort vehicles start to thin out.
"We're outnumbered, Alpha."
"Lucy," he said stiffly. "Use your moving ring."
My heart lurched. "I'm not leaving you--"
"They're trying to kill me. I'll have a better chance of getting away from them if I can ditch the car, but you can't shift. Use your ring."
My jaw trembled, and I reached for it, but my blood ran cold.
"Lucy?"
"...it's gone."
He cursed. "Son of a--"
Through the chaos and noise, I could hear Selene's laughter echoing in the back of my mind. It sent a shiver down my spine.
"The first chance I get, I'm shoving a sword through her fucking chest."
David's face was etched with a steely resolve as he drove. The protective barrier shimmered as it deflected an incoming attack. The Escort team was fighting valiantly to protect us, but they were struggling against the relentless assault.
But just as it seemed that we were trapped and outnumbered, a glimmer of hope emerged on the horizon. An unfamiliar vehicle roared onto the scene, coming to our aid. It seemed that unexpected allies had joined the fray.
"Fuck! Get down."
I felt David's hand on my head, shoving me down as it rushed towards us. The impact was sharp. The world around us turned into a chaotic blur as the van rammed into us, forcing our car off the road and sending it into the forest.
"Hold on!" David screamed. I heard him trying to change paths to get traction. The tires screeched, and I heard Selene cackling.
Perhaps in your next life, you little runt!
Panic washed over me as I was sure that we were going to die. The car skidded and started to freefall. My stomach lurched. I looked at David as the air started to heat. Magic rippled through the car, a surge of energy that was raw and powerful. It was as if the very essence of our supernatural world had come alive, responding to the dire situation.
Before I could fully comprehend what was happening, the car exploded, and everything went dark.
The world around me spun into a dizzying whirlwind as I awoke. Nothing hurt, but I realized that I was moving. The wind rushed past me, and I was on someone's back.
"D...avid?"
"Easy," he whispered. "Hold on for a little longer."
I blinked, trying to get an understanding of what happened. I felt the warmth of his skin, but the world felt so... surreal. My gaze darted around, and at first, I thought we were sprinting through a forest. But then, reality slowly unraveled before me: David was flying.
His form had transformed, and it was like nothing I'd ever seen before. Dark scales adorned his neck and spine, gleaming faintly in the soft light. Confusion mingled with awe as I watched the ground beneath us glide by. I clung to him, my mind a whirlwind of questions.
But then, he slowed down until he reached a small clearing. He lowered me to my feet, which were oddly steady. With a fluid motion, the scales faded, as did his skin. Then, David shifted into a massive wolf, much bigger than he had been before. He could have been the size of a horse easily, maybe even bigger, as he seemed to blend in with the darkness. His eyes retained their mysterious purple glow, but he said nothing. I didn't know if that was a good thing. Was he lost in his mind? In his power?
But there was no time to ask. With a gentle nudge, David signaled for me to climb onto his back. I did so. He took off quickly as I heard the haunting howls and the unmistakable cracks of gunshots. I couldn't believe it. They were still following us.
Fear gripped my heart. How? What happened to the car? How had they followed us after we went over the gorge?
David's powerful muscles flexed beneath me as he sprinted through the forest, agile and swift despite his massive size. We weaved through the trees, our surroundings blurring into a dark tapestry of shadows and moonlight. I heard something in the darkness, like whispers or a song.
No, it was the thudding of paws on the ground. I could see eyes in the darkness. Slowly, they broke away and circled back behind us.
As the chaos of the chase continued, a thought nagged at the edges of my consciousness. He raced through the night, the sounds of pursuit growing fainter as David took us further into the depths of the wilderness. I held on tightly as David's powerful wolf form surged through the night. Shadows danced around us, their dark fingers caressing the edges of my vision. The eerie sounds of the chase echoed in my ears, mingling with distant gunshots that sent shivers down my spine.
The world around us seemed to be shifting. The trees creaked and groaned. I swear they swayed out of our way, moving to reorganize themselves. As we raced onward, the pursuit showed no signs of relenting. David's paws were silent against the forest floor, yet they didn't seem to be getting further away.
Then, just as we crossed some invisible barrier, an unseen force struck David with a crack of light and fury. He was thrown to the side, yet he caught himself, skidding across the ground and running on. Blood oozed from the wound, blending with his dark fur.
"David? Are you okay? S-Shouldn't we stop?"
I tightened my grip on him, fear for his safety coursing through me. He didn't answer. I didn't even know if he could like this.
My heart raced, matching the rhythm of David's powerful strides. I didn't hear the sound of gunshots, but I could feel David's fur growing slick with blood. I looked back and saw no one through the trees. They were still moving. I swear I heard someone cry out in agony and fear.
David let out a howl that seemed to fill the air and shake the trees.
Then, I heard tires screeching across the ground. Headlights pierced the darkness. David howled, rushing towards the sound.
The jeeps skidded to a stop. The doors were flung open. Amos and Trent emerged, their expressions a mix of relief and concern. They rushed towards us as David collapsed, shifting back into his human form. I landed on top of him, shuddering. The stark contrast between his powerful, majestic wolf and his wounded, naked human figure shook me.
I leaped off David's back, and my hands trembled as they rushed towards us. I shuddered, realizing that I was covered in blood, too. The wound was much worse than I'd initially thought. Blood oozed from his shoulder and side. The skin around the wound started to blacken.
Trent cursed. "Son of a bitch."
He dropped down on David's other side. "David, say something."
He was so pale.
"David," I cried, fear gnawing at my heart. "David, you have to say something!"
The blackness continued to spread across his skin. Trent turned him over.
"Call Maggie, get him to meet us halfway to the house, bring Duke too. There isn't much time!"
Amos hefted him up. I saw Blue in the front seat speaking into a radio. I rushed after them.
