Lucy
A few days later, the call for werewolves in Hecate City to help with testing the barrier came out. I rode with Duke from school to the meeting site. David was already there.
They had us walk outside the small clearing before casting the barrier over the area.
As we stood before the barrier, anticipation and curiosity filled the air. The shimmering wall was supposed to repel us just for being werewolves.
"All right, step through.”
I nodded, feeling a mix of excitement and trepidation. We walked through easily and someone took notes before someone stepped out with us and took our campus rings, tagging them with colors so we knew whose was whose.
“Try again.”
I stepped towards the barrier, and I felt a tingling sensation, like static electricity running over my body. However, much to my surprise, I passed through the barrier effortlessly. It didn't repel me at all.
"That's odd," Duke remarked, glancing back at David.
David tried next, but nothing happened and he walked through effortlessly.
Duke followed just behind with a shrug. The three others who were there were repelled. The person taking notes looked at us as we looked at the other three.
"What just happened?" Duke asked, his brow furrowed in confusion.
I looked back at David, who was equally perplexed.
"I don't know," he said, frowning. “It repelled everyone else…”
“Can I get your supernatural ID numbers?” The recorder asked. David pulled out his ID. I fumbled for my wallet to give mine as well and Duke handed over his. She frowned and swiped on her tablet.
“We’ll try again after we make some tweaks to the barrier. Hang out outside the barrier for a second.”
We stepped out and took a seat on a fallen tree.
David frowned thoughtfully.
“Something wrong?”
“Just in thought,” David said. “Watching to see how they tweak it.”
I frowned, looking at the shimmering wall.
"What does this mean?" I asked, feeling a mixture of confusion and concern.
Did it mean we weren’t real werewolves?
“All right, let’s try again.”
David went first, but just like before he pass through without trouble. Duke went next and then me, but nothing happened. The other three were still kept out though.
“Can any of you shift?” She asked, looking at her screen. “Perhaps it’s just not picking up on the virus?”
“I can,” David said stepping back out.
I frowned watching him shift. I’d seen Matt and Tony shift. There was no bulging in his clothes. His suit was perfectly undisturbed. Darkness seemed to pour out of him. The other three werewolves looked shocked and stumbled back as the shadows parted and glowing purple eyes stared back at me. I gasped. I heard Duke gasp as the shadows vanished revealing a large black wolf. He was much larger than Tony and Matt were, almost the size of a horse.
I turned sharply and looked at Duke who looked at me with wide eyes.
It was David. David was the black wolf in our dreams, but that didn’t make any sense. When I told him about us dreaming, he hadn’t seemed like he knew anything about it.
Duke shifted closer to me and nudged me. I nudged him back, glancing between him and David’s large form.
My stomach twisted into knots. I didn’t know what to think about why David would be in our dreams but pretend not to know.
David stepped through the barrier and shifted into his human form in another swirl of shadow with a huff.
“We’ve collected as much data as we can,” the recorder said. “I’ll get it all back to the developers and we’ll have another call when we have an update.”
They gave us back our rings and David shook his head. “Well, better luck next time, I guess. Are you two headed back to campus?”
“Yeah,” Duke said. “We should probably go see Luke.”
He nodded. “Eat something before you come back or Blue is going to throw another fit.”
Duke scowled. “I got it.”
David looked at me with a warm smile. “Watch after him, hm? And don’t let him foist his food off on you. Blue will be cross if her agenda is threatened anymore.”
I laughed even as my stomach twisted into knots. “I’ll do my best.”
We rode back to the coven campus in tense silence. I wanted to talk so badly, but we were in front of Thomas who would probably have to report what we said to David. When the car pulled up, we both jumped out and practically raced each other to Luke’s office. We burst through the door and found him sitting on his stool fiddling with something. We closed the door behind us, and Duke up a
“You two are in a tizzy. What happened?”
“The black wolf that’s in our dreams,” Duke said. “It’s David!”
He frowned. “How do you know that?”
“We saw him shift! Black wolf. Purple eyes. He’s fucking huge. He’s not like any werewolf I’ve ever seen.” Duke threw up his hands. “What am I supposed to do? I’m living at his house!”
Luke shook his head and took out a notebook. “Don’t jump to conclusions for one. And how big?”
“Let’s say Lucy could ride him in more than one way.”
My face burned as Luke burst into laughter. “Duke!”
He snickered. “Why don’t you tell me what happened?”
I explained what happened to the barrier. Luke listened intently. His eyes were focused as he jotted down notes. He asked a few questions. Then, I noticed that he was surrounded by books and strange drawings.
“Are you on the design team for the barrier?”
He nodded. “I did get a small report about the anomalies. I’ve been pulled to research it.”
He hummed and frowned down at the page.
"This is intriguing," he said, tapping the end of his pen thoughtfully against his notepad. "Do you feel like he’s lying to you? That he’s there and just watching it happen without intervening or somehow benefitting from it?”
I worried my lip and shook my head. “I don’t know what to think, honestly.”
“That’s a fair answer.” Luke leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms over his chest. "Dreams can be complex, Lucy," he explained. "They often reveal subconscious thoughts and emotions, as well as glimpses of our past, present, and future. Is it possible that you just associate David with a sense of protection as so you’ve conjured him in your dreams when you needed him?”
I shook my head. “But I didn’t know he was a black wolf or had glowing purple eyes until after he was already appearing in my dreams.”
“Same,” Duke said.
Luke chuckled. “You don’t give your magical instincts enough credit. You’ve known him for a long time since you were children. Children tend to be able to guess on instinct. “
Duke nodded; his brow furrowed. "I guess… but…”
“But?”
He worried his lip. “I guess I don’t really know. It feels like it was definitely David, but I can’t… bring myself to believe that he knows that this is happening and isn’t saying anything.”
“Maybe he doesn’t.”
I frowned. “What do you mean?”
“Just because he appears in your dreams doesn’t mean that he remembers doing so.” He hummed. “If I had to guess, David is an alpha, not just the political turn, but the dynamic. He’s predisposed to protection. Perhaps he’s simply been reacting to your need for protection. We tap into parts of our powers unconsciously all the time, and he is young.”
I looked at Duke who looked just as confused as I felt.
"Overall, it seems that you both have a deeper connection with David than you realize."
“Should we tell him?”
“That is up to you,” Luke said. “Though maybe think hard on it.”
I flushed. “I… well… I already told him about the Moon Goddess dreams.”
Duke eyed me. “You told him about my dreams too?”
“It just happened! It was relevant. We were talking about the Crescent Moon Coven.”
Luke went still. “What about them?”
“That… they were behind the attack at Shell Cove.”
His eyes narrowed, but he said nothing. “I suggest you do some more research on dream magic. Maybe enlist him on the search.”
He closed his notebook. “As for the Crescent Moon Coven, I’ll reach out to David to give him what I know. It may help his investigation.”
“I want to know too,” I said. “If they’re after me then… Then I should know what I’m dealing with.”
“Me too,” Duke said. “I’m getting the same messages. That witch… had a message for me too.”
He looked between the two of us and nodded. “I’ll get some texts together and have them here for you.”
He sighed and stood. “When I took you two on, I didn’t think I’d be delving deeper into werewolf history.”
“Sorry.”
“Don’t be,” he said and shrugged. He grinned. “Maybe we’ll find something that will help me piss her off more than usual.
