19. The moon-shaped pattern
Lucy
We stopped going out at night after that night. Instead, we had a lot more sex. It seemed like every day Matt and Tony wanted more. I passed out every night.
When they were gone all day, I started to leave our rooms and wander around a little. No one seemed very mean, but they kept away from me, except for their beta’s daughter. She was very nice. I was nervous about being around her at first, but she was very nice, and she didn’t seem to mind that I didn’t know how to do anything. She walked with me, and we didn’t say much to each other, but it was nice.
One day, she took me on a tour of the pack house’s grounds in a small golf cart. When we got back, we ran into the ladies that helped me get ready for the ceremony.
“They must be gone!” The older woman said. “Those two don’t know how to keep their hands to themselves.”
She nudged me to the table and fussed about me not eating enough to deal with them.
“It’s Matt, isn’t it?” She asked as she put a plate in front of me. “Tony at least has a little bit of control, but Matt just does whatever he wants!”
I smiled and ate what she gave me even though I didn’t know what it was.
The beta’s daughter looked at me curiously.
“I’m glad you’re here,” she said after a moment. “At least now, Matt might care a little more and actually help.”
I blinked at her. “I haven’t done anything.”
“You’re their mate,” the older woman said, waving a spoon. “You don’t need to do anything but breathe honestly.”
I finished the food, and we went walking some more.
“Is there… anything I can do?” I asked tentatively.
She blinked. “I’m sure they’ll give you some duties eventually. But there’s not much to do. We’re a small pack, so there’s not much to manage.”
She paused. “Unless you’re good at accounting. I’m pretty sure we could use someone to deal with all the receipts.”
I shook my head. She shrugged. “Then, I wouldn’t worry about it. Just keep our alphas happy. We were doing just fine before you got here. There’s no need to try and jump in and do a bunch of things.”
She sighed and took a deep breath. “Though, I’m pretty sure no one would complain if you turned up pregnant sooner rather than later. We could use some more pack members!”
I blinked. My face heated as we headed back to the house
Tony and Matt were back. Matt looked like he was ready to throw himself onto a chair and mope for the rest of the day, but as soon as he saw me, his eyes brightened. He rushed over to me and swept me up into his arms.
“You are the only reason to humor him!” Matt cried. “Save me from my horrible brother.”
The beta’s daughter laughed, waved, and walked away. I guess for now, this was my only duty, so I stroked his hair.
“You did well.”
Matt looked at her and blinked. Then he smiled. He cupped my face and kissed me again before sweeping me off my feet.
“Don’t even think about it,” Tony growled, grabbing him. He lifted me out of Matt’s arms. “She needs her strength for tonight.”
“What about after?”
He scoffed. “You’ll live if you don’t have sex for one night, Matt. And you have things to do.”
Tony shoved a file in his arms. He set me down and kissed my temple. “We’ll see you later. You might have to eat dinner without us, but we should see you soon after that.”
I nodded and watched Tony march Matt down the hall and into an office somewhere. I thought about following, but I held back. I didn’t know anything about what they were talking about, and it seemed important. I turned and went exploring the other wing of the house.
After dinner, Tony and Matt came to get me. Matt kissed me soundly and helped me change into another plain dress. Tony led us back outside. Matt seemed to bounce along down the trail, but as we got closer to the clearing, I grew more nervous. Tony led me into the center of the clearing. He pulled my dress off and led me to kneel in the dirt with him.
I felt a little silly doing so, but I didn’t resist. He was just trying to help me.
“Close your eyes.”
I closed them and tried to feel what he’d been talking about before.
“Don’t,” Tony said. “Just relax.”
He pressed a kiss to my head. “Just relax and let your mind wander.”
Slowly, he let go of my hands, but I didn’t open my eyes.
For a while, I didn’t feel anything. I waited and waited until I stopped thinking that I was waiting.
Tony
Matt nudged me. Are you sure this is going to work?
Chill, I said and nudged him back. Just let it happen.
I didn’t know exactly what I was looking for. The journals weren’t entirely clear.
Then, I saw just the softest ripple of light. Matt gasped and went still. The moonlight seemed to glide over her skin. Then, it grew stronger and brighter until her skin melted away to soft white fur. Matt grabbed my shoulder as her human form vanished, and she landed on the ground on four paws.
She opened her eyes, and her eyes widened. She turned her head left and right before chasing her tail. It was adorable, but I couldn’t even laugh. Matt was speechless beside me because even though we were happy that she had shifted. We were both stunned.
There, on her chest, was a glowing crescent moon-shaped pattern growing brighter with every moment.
And she who is marked by the crescent moon, I heard Matt saying in his mind. Shall be the Goddess’ hand on the plane. She is endless danger, assassination, peace, and hope.
