Matt
He laughed. “They wish.”
I cleared my throat. “Why… help me? After everything?”
Dagon turned his head and looked at me. A bit of light glinted in his eyes. “I’m your liaison too.”
Then, he walked away.
“Thank you,” I said, shocked. “I’ll keep it in mind.”
I got dressed quickly, grabbed my keys and headed out. I didn’t chance using my car’s GPS, so I searched for the manual directions and headed towards Black Web City. It was more like a town, but no one looked at me strangely. I got out and went into the hospital.
The clerk looked up at me with a smile. “How can I help you?”
I cleared my throat. “I… need to be tested.”
“What sort of test?”
“A shifter test?” I asked, not really sure.
“You’re concerned about your power rating, a restraint, or a siphon?”
“All maybe?”
She nodded and gave me a clipboard.
“If you’d like your test to remain anonymous, fill out everything but your name and take the coupon at the bottom for your results.”
My eyes shuttered closed and I finished the information and took the coupon. A nurse escorted me into a room, and I hoped that whatever would come of this wouldn’t destroy everything I knew to be true.
Later, when I left the testing facility, I was so on edge I wanted a drink. I was grateful for the recommendation. I clutched the coupon and took deep breaths. My mind was still whirling about Quillan and Ginevra. I didn’t know what was going to happen
I headed back to Blue Moon territory and headed to a little bar that I tended to go to. I settled into a seat and ordered a class of whiskey.
“Long time no see.”
I turned and looked as the woman took a seat. She was in a sharp dress suit with dark hair that cascaded down shoulders. She exuded an air of confidence and authority, which immediately set off warning bells in my mind. She was familiar, but I couldn’t place where I had seen her,
“We know each other?”
“We met last year during the Crescent Moon Festival. Vanessa.”
I blinked and nodded, vaguely remembering her. She was an alpha from somewhere. A rogue I thought.
“Ah, sorry. I’m usually better with names and faces. It’s been a wild few weeks. How are you?”
“Fine. And you? I heard you and your brother got mated… to some half-breed?”
I hesitated for a moment, not sure how much to disclose. "She's doing okay. We’re doing okay, you could say."
To my surprise, her expression darkened, and I could see fury in her eyes. I realized that she wasn't just casually asking after Lucy; she had some ulterior motive for inquiring about her.
Feeling uneasy, I decided it was best to finish my drink and head back to the Estate. I finished my drink and bade her goodbye. My stomach growled, but I could eat at home, and I was sure that I was stretching my luck with how long Tony would actually stay asleep.
As I drove away, I noticed in my rearview mirror that the woman was following me. My heart started pounding as I realized that she might have some hostile intentions toward me or our pack.
I drove through the city, taking random turns to see if she would stop following me, but she persisted. I couldn't shake the feeling of unease as I realized that this woman could pose a significant threat.
Finally, I decided to pull over in front of a building. She stopped a few feet behind me, and I saw her expression: it was pure fury. As I parked the car and cut the engine, I got out and went to her car. I took a deep breath, preparing for whatever confrontation awaited me.
She stepped out of her car with a smug smile.
"You’re a terrible liar, Matt.” She said, her voice dripping with confidence.
“Vanessa, right?” I squared my shoulders. "Who are you, and what do you want with us?" I asked, trying to maintain my composure.
"You'll find out soon enough," she replied cryptically, before turning on her heel and walking away.
I watched her leave, my mind racing with possibilities of who she might be and what her intentions were. She cranked up her car and waved goodbye. I wait until she was gone before getting back into my car and heading home.
As I headed inside to find Tony, I stopped. Tony needed rest. There was Ginevra and Quillan to deal with, and still the issue of Lucy and our father.
“Fuck this.” I shook my head and headed upstairs to my room to collapse into bed and sleep. Crazy women would just have to wait until after I had gotten enough sleep.
I woke up hours later it felt like. I washed up and shuffled down the hall to find Tony. He was just waking up and groggy. I walked in and found that his bandages hadn’t been changed. That was weird, considering our nanny’s usual amount of worrying.
“Let me help.”
He panted, leaning forward. I changed the bandages carefully before getting him into a different shirt.
“We need to talk, but let’s head to dinner first, yeah?”
“I told the servants to keep Ginevra and… the child up here.”
I sighed. “You’re going to have to deal with it. Didn’t you always want kids?”
“With our mate,” he growled, pushing himself to stand. “Not some random human woman. The Council is plotting against us, I know it.”
Somehow, I didn’t think that wasn’t true, but I didn’t think that was the whole truth of it. As Tony and I came downstairs that evening, a sense of tension hung in the air, and I could feel the unease among the members of the Blue Moon pack. It was evident that something was up from the tense way the shuffled around. It was eerily quiet too.
As we entered the main dining hall, I felt Tony tense beside me. I smelled the scent of raw meat and terror, thick in the air.
At the other side of the table was Oren, our father. Blood was smeared on his face. His hair was long and shaggy. He looked like a wild animal as he tore into the partially cooked met on his plate. No one else sat with him. Instead, they were all standing around, our nanny included. As I looked around at the members of the pack, I could see the mixture of emotions on their faces. Some were fearful, while others were relieved to have their Alpha back.
I though you said we had time.
Tony clenched his jaw. It seems like our beta has always been our father’s beta.
Fuck.
I really wasn’t in a position to deal with this. My stomach turned as I watched him eat. He was more feral than I could ever remember. Would Tony end up like that soon? How soon?
His eyes locked onto Tony, and there was a sense of pride in his gaze, as if he saw a reflection of himself in his son.
He grinned, grim and bloody before pushing back from his seat. The servants and pack members on that side of the table scuttled back as he rounded the table to come toward us.
"Tony," our father growled in a deep, primal voice, acknowledging him.
"Dad," Tony replied, trying to sound calm, but I could sense the mixture of emotions in his voice.
Our father's attention shifted to me, and I could see the confusion in his eyes as he took in my presence.
"Who's this?" he asked, his voice rough.
"This is Matt," Tony introduced, glancing at me briefly.
I nodded in greeting, trying to appear respectful despite the feeling that something was off. He leaned close and sniffed me, scowling.
“You don’t smell like my son…” Then he turned to Tony and took him by the shoulders. “But you… You look terrible. Like blood.”
“We had a run in with some hunters.”
“Did you kill them?”
Tony grinned. “What do you think?”
He laughed and clapped Tony on the back. “That’s my son! Look at you. I can’t believe it’s been so long…”
He shoved Tony into a seat. “Nothing that a bit of good meat won’t fix.”
He took his seat at the top of the table and glanced at me. It was brief and dismissive. I rounded the table to take the seat across from Tony. He growled low in his chest.
On pure instinct, I growled back. He grinned. His eyes alight.
“I might have been wrong! Must be the silver.”
I sat down.
What the hell was that? Tony asked.
I’ve had a fucking day, and I’m hungry.
You think we should aggravate him?
I grabbed a steak and started eating.
“Cline’s told me that you got mated!” He said. “I’m a little hurt that you didn’t wait until I came back, but I understand…. How’s Lucy?"
