27. Gun men

Matt
The car was driving down the road, but it didn’t feel like we were going fast enough. Cars passed up every once in a while. Couldn’t he drive any faster? What the hell was taking so long? Were we even going the right way?
Are we going the right way?
I frowned as I thought about it and looked over at Tony. He looked over at me, his eyes glowing red and before he could say something, the car jerked left. I heard a blaring horn and the crunch of glass. I heard screeching tires and pain exploded along my side as the car spun. It slammed into the side railing once, twice, three times before it finally stopped. The scent of deployed airbags and smoke drifted into my nose. I looked up, blinking through the pain and the thick, burning liquid in my eye, searing for the fire. I saw something drifting up and from the hood of the car. Then, I heard the driver’s door open. Tony’s door opened next.
Tony snarled. I heard something rip. Then, there was more snarling. I groaned, trying to get my head together, to get out and help Tony. I turned and leaned away from my door. Blood dripped down the caved in metal. Glass tinkled as it fell into the car. I pressed my hand to the pain in my side and grimaced as it came away red and sticky. I was bleeding. The pain was radiating up my side, but I pushed myself towards Tony side as I heard bones cracking and running footsteps. There were at least four sets of footsteps besides Tony’s footsteps.
I tumbled out of the car just as a gunshot fired. I heard glass breaking and looked up to where Tony was driving his foot into another man’s chest. The man with the gun went flying back. Another shot rang out breaking through more glass. I felt it zipping past me and the glass fell over me.
“Tony,” I grunted. “Lucy!”
Tony snarled, slamming the man in front of him to the ground. I heard the crunch of bones and the man stopped moving.
“Go ahead of me,” he snarled. “I’ll cover you.”
“I’m not leaving you,” I growled, pushing myself up. Then, another man appeared, seemingly from nowhere.
He lifted his gun and I dove aside, rolling out of the way of gunshot. I felt the heat of his across my back, like a knife cutting across my shoulders. The concrete hissed and cracked as the bullets buried themselves into the pavement where I had once been.
The man growled, following me as I slid under car. I hissed as someone grabbed my leg and dragged me from under it. My back burned as gravel and dirt dug into the wound. Just as I slid from beneath the car and could see the clear blue sky, I shifted. The man snarled and aimed a silver dagger at me. I twisted out of the way and sunk my teeth into his leg. He howled in pain and aimed for me again. I bit his arm and tore out a chunk of his flesh. Blood gushed over my tongue. The taste of it was familiar. The man was human.
He tumbled to the ground screaming and holding his arm. The man with the gun fired at mem barely missing me with his last bullet before I leaped at him, tackling him and tearing his throat out. This man was also human. Werewolf blood tasted different. I knew that from all the fights Tony and I had been in. More gunfire flew through the air, hitting the car we had been in. Another bullet zipped past me. I felt it heating up my fur, but I didn’t feel another wound. I didn’t see our driver anywhere, but Tony was using a man as a shield and firing back at the men who were shooting at us.
“The car!” Tony yelled. “Quickly!”
I ran towards the still running vehicle that our attackers had likely gotten out of. I looked around before darting towards the car and leaping in through the opened backseat. I pulled the doors closed behind on both side. A few moments later, Tony had gotten into the driver’s seat. He shot a man in the way and threw the car into reverse, backing away from the other cars before spinning around and driving across the divide to the other side of the road. The passenger door waved back and forth before slamming closed as Tony slammed on the accelerator. The car bumped and jumped as he drove, panting and furious.
“How bad is it?” Tony asked. “Shift back!”
I groaned as I shifted back and pressed a hand to my side. It was healing, but it was healing slowly than I would have liked.
“The two I killed were human.”
He cursed. “Silver and wolfsbane—”
The glass exploded over me. I turned to cover my face. He ducked and kept driving. The car accelerated again, swerving from side to side to avoid the bullets being fired.
“We don’t have much gas,” Tony said. “We’re going to have to make a run for it at some point. Rest for now.”
I swallowed, panting and trying to block out the pain. It wasn’t working. My back was burning, not just from the gravel, but the wolfsbane and silver of the bullets.
“Coincidence?” I asked.
“Fuck no, but as soon as I find out who’s behind it, there’s going to be hell.”
I smiled at that. “I believe that.”
The car swerved and weaved down the highway. The trees grew more familiar, but the sound of gunfire didn’t fade. The cars were a bit farther away than they had been earlier, but not by much.
Tony sped up, and I felt the car leave the ground for a few moments before landing hard. I couldn’t tell what he’d done, but then he was getting out of the car. He opened the back door and pulled me out and across the seats. I hissed at the pain, but I didn’t fight him.
“Quickly!”
He shifted and leaped towards the forest. I shifted with a shudder and followed as fast as I could. We were maybe a few hundred feet inside the trees when I heard the cars pulling up. There was snarling and I heard werewolves following us, but I wasn’t worried about them. So long as we got too far to be shot at, we should be fine.
Even injured, I was still stronger than most wolves and Tony was so pissed off, he was probably on the edge of going berserk.
We crossed a river when Tony turned around swiftly and went running back the way we came. I heard a sharp yelp of pain and a loud crack, then snarling and rustling in the bushes. I smelled more blood and two heartbeats winked out, though I could still hear Tony’s heart thudding strong. Someone snarled and barked. I heard Tony snarl as I stumbled and leaned against a rock, trying to catch my breath. The blood loss had taken more of a toll on me than I thought it would.
Keep going, Tony said.
I clenched my jaw. As if I’d leave you here to deal with them on your own.
Too many of them. Run!
I flinched but then I heard the sound of others coming through the forest. I saw the glow of their eyes even as I could still hear Tony fighting further back. There were at least seven of them. Two of them were alphas, but I didn’t recognize any of them.
I clenched my jaw, eyeing them all. This wasn’t going to be easy.

Tony
I threw another wolf off me, slamming him into a rock hard enough that his skull cracked. The bloodlust that the Blue Moon wolves were known for, the madness and anger were starting to take over, but I tried to fight it back. I tried to focus it on getting through these wolves as fast as possible. We couldn’t fight them all.
Matt was being stubborn as hell and in his state, he wouldn’t be able to do much good against them.
Another one dashed towards me, and I heard human footsteps coming closer.
Gun men! I screamed through our bond before throwing another one off me and taking off towards Matt. I heard him fighting as best he could when I leaped and landed on one of his attackers, tearing off one of their ears and flattening him to the ground.
I bit the one that had Matt cornered and shoved him away. Matt stumbled against the stone and shook his head. I could smell the blood leaking from his wounds. I looked back towards the sound of the human footsteps before nudging him ahead of me.
Run!
