47. Good to hear

Matt

I paced. I was so pissed off I couldn’t even eat. How dare she try to keep Lucy from me? From us? I could feel Tony’s irritation through our bond, but I couldn’t reply just yet. I didn’t have anything to tell him.
Yvonne had taken Lucy into her office hours ago and after sending one of the servants to tell me that Lucy didn’t want to join me and doctor’s orders. I didn’t have the sense of calm I needed to handle this. Our irritation fed on itself, growing and growing.
To make matters worse, hearing that our dad would be released this year wasn’t helping either of us.
“Matt,” our nanny called. I turned on her, panting and furious. “Maybe you should go for a run?”
My eye twitched. “How can I go for a run when that witch is keeping Lucy from me?”
She clasped her hands together. “Pacing and fuming here isn’t going to help at all. If anything, you’re only making your and Tony’s… predicament worse.”
I set my jaw. I wanted to argue, but then I heard someone else coming down the hall.
“The doctor is taking her to her room now.”
I brushed past our nanny and the servant and hurried down the hall as the doctor, and Lucy started climbing the stairs. I leaped from the first floor to the second, cutting them off. Lucy was still wrapped in the blanket the doctor had given her. She seemed a little out of it, but for the first time, she looked at me.
“You’re dismissed,” I growled at the doctor. “And you’d best start packing.”
The doctor laughed. “You’re not nearly as fearsome as you think you are.”
I growled at her, getting in her face. “You think you’re safe? If I—”
“I think that if you killed me, the entirety of Blue Moon would be razed within the hour.” She narrowed her eyes. “I wonder how Tony will feel about that.”
I growled at her and looked at Lucy. I reached for her arm, and she pulled away from me. Shock went through me. I blinked, unable to understand what was going on.
“Thank you, Yvonne. I’ll be okay now.”
Yvonne smiled. “Good to hear.”
She gave Lucy a stack of books and pinched her cheek before heading downstairs. Lucy walked around me without a word. I followed her.
“What did she tell you?” I asked. “What were you doing all this time?”
Lucy said nothing as she reached the luna’s door. My hand shot out to stop her.
“You’re not sleeping in there,” I said. “You can bring your books to my room.”
“Yvonne said I needed rest and peace,” she said softly.
“You can have all of that with me.”
“I don’t want to,” she whispered, curling into herself.
My blood went cold. “What?”
She turned slowly and looked up at me. Her lips trembled, but she turned back to the door and tried to open it.
“Stop,” I said. “What did you just say?”
“I… don’t want to.”
I grit my teeth. “How are you supposed to get used to being a werewolf if you keep up with this? We’re mates, Lucy. You’re not sleeping in that room alone. Away from me. Can’t you feel anything?”
“No.”
I grit my teeth, then my phone chimed. “What did she say to you? You weren’t like this before? You were starting to understand before…”
Her jaw trembled. Tears filled her eyes.
“See, you do feel something. You don’t want to be apart from me… You don’t want to be alone.” I cupped her elbow. “We’ll go on a run together. It’s the full moon, you know? It’ll be perfect.”
“I don’t want to,” she said again, no louder, but her tone had changed.
“We’re mates. It’s the full moon. Of course, you want to go on a run. All werewolves want to.”
“I don’t want to.”
I clenched my jaw. “What do you mean you don’t want to?”
Lucy looked up at me then. “I don’t want to go for a run.”
I set my jaw. “Well, you have to. It’s the full moon.”
“Why even pretend you care about what I want?” She asked.
“Of course, I care what you want. I also care about what’s good for you.”
Tony, help!
What is it? Why are you panicking?
Lucy doesn’t want to come for a run. What do I say to her?
Shifting will help her get more in touch with her wolf side.
“Yvonne’s not a werewolf. She doesn’t know what’s best on a full moon.” I took her hand. “You’ll feel better. You’ll get more in touch with your wolf side. Don’t you remember what it was like to run with us?”
I pulled her along. She dropped her books, but she didn’t resist. It felt a bit like before, and I was grateful.
I headed downstairs to where everyone else was heading off for full moon runs. I nudged her.
“Go on,” I said. “Just like before.”
She didn’t move. She didn’t even step from under the awning of the porch.
“Come on,” I urged, nudging her into the moonlight.
She still didn’t move. I waited and waited, but she didn’t move. She just stared up through the trees.
Something’s wrong, I told Tony. She’s not shifting.
What do you mean? She shifted before.
“Why aren’t you shifting?” I asked.
“I don’t want to.”
I blinked, gritting my teeth. “Shift, Lucy.”
“I don’t want to,” she said softly. Her shoulders slumped. “I don’t want to.”
“You have to—”
“I don’t want to!” She yelled, turning away from me. She rushed back into the house before I could really understand what had just happened.
“Lucy!” I chased her upstairs, taking them two at a time, but she wasn’t heading toward the luna’s room. She’d disappeared down the hallway leading to the doctor’s office. I growled and banged on the door.
“Lucy!”
Yvonne opened the door and closed it before I could push my way past. She stood between me and the door and looked up at me.
“Interesting how you’ve suddenly become a medical professional in the last few hours.”
“You don’t know what’s best for werewolves. She needs to get in touch with her wolf side. It’s the full moon. Werewolves have to shift on the full moon!” I growled at her. “I will rip your throat out if you try to keep our mate from me.”
“Even if you managed to kill me, you wouldn’t be able to get this door opened,” she said.
“Managed? You—”
Then, I felt a prick of something on my side. The area started to itch and burn. I looked down and flinched away from her.
“Silver,” I hissed.
She lifted the small blade and pointed it at me. “It’s not very large, but it doesn’t need to be. Go away, Matt. Lucy will make herself available to you when she wants to. Hopefully, by then, you’ll have gotten your head out of your ass.”
“You’ll be out by the end of the week?”
She shrugged and stepped back into her office.
I roared and slammed my fist into the wood, trying to punch through it. Pain shot through my arm, and I howled.
What did you do? What’s happening? Tony asked.
She’s back with the doctor… She wouldn’t shift.
I felt the anger and frustration starting to take over. I shifted and left the house, rushing out into the woods as fast as my legs could carry me. I ran for what felt like too long until I was too tired to run any longer, and I collapsed on the edge of a stream.
Tony, I don’t know what to do next.
A few moments passed before he said. I’ll be back soon.
