Lucy
"A feisty little thing. I can see why my sons had such fun with you."
My gut lurched as I struggled and pushed. He laughed.
"Don't worry. If you relax, you'll enjoy it."
I twisted, trying to kick back as he wrenched my arm up higher against my back.
"Doesn't seem like Xavier's brat has tasted you yet," he chuckled. "Good. Tony doesn't deserve to have to share with that punk... Keep it in the family, I say."
He yanked me back and threw me onto the ground. I rolled away from him until my back hit the large boulder. He turned, palming his crotch as Selene shook her head.
"I had planned to let the twins have you only, but I see no reason. Perhaps a bit of time with Oren will teach you your place," Selene laughed, sitting above me on the boulder.
My pulse quickened as Oren closed in on me, his menacing presence sending shivers down my spine. I got from in front of the boulder, remembering bits and pieces of Lucian's training. I had to focus. I could get out of this somehow. Outrun him, dodge him long enough. Selene couldn't hold me here long. Whatever I did, I couldn't allow myself to be captured again. He lurched forward, and I rolled, dodging him and gliding onto my feet. He turned. His eyes, cold and predatory, locked onto mine, a cruel smile tugging at his lips.
"I like lively prey," he said. "Reminds me of someone from long ago... little Eve was lively the first time, too."
I took a deep breath and watched him carefully. There were only a few paths through the trees. If I could reach just one of them, it would be alright. Summoning my inner power, I reached for my courage and some trickle of power. A surge of energy coursed through my veins. My mind cleared. It almost felt like he was moving in slow motion. I stepped back. He lunged forward and flew through the air towards me.
A radiant lance of light materialized in my grasp, illuminating the surrounding darkness. I aimed it at him. His eyes widened as I thrust it forward, aiming it directly at Oren.
He twisted in the air, dodging it. I turned, trying to follow his movements, then a force shoved me forward, slamming me into a tree so hard I was dizzy and bounced back. As I fell, Oren leaped over my head. I rolled away. The ground shifted and tumbled me around.
I couldn't get my footing. I heard Selene laughing as my heart pounded in my chest. I stumbled, rolled, and tumbled until I reached a pathway.
"Bitch!"
I rolled to my feet and took off down the path.
"After her!" Selene yelled after me.
Oren let out a deafening howl, and I heard him running after me.
The flicker of triumph was short-lived as the fear started to take over the deeper I went into the moonlit forest, my heart racing with hope. I just had to keep going. I just had to keep running.
Was this my dream or her vision she pulled me into? Could I run into someone else's dreamscape?
I don't know, but I had to try.
I pushed through the darkness.
"You can't run forever, Lucy," Selene's mocking voice echoed in the shadowy woods.
I ignored her, running as fast as I could, leaping over a fallen tree and following the path until it started to grow narrower.
With every step, I could feel Oren's presence closing in on me. He wasn't going to let me escape so easily. I didn't want to know what he planned to do. I didn't want to chance not being able to use magic again. My breaths came out in ragged gasps, my head swirling with the confusion of this eerie dreamscape.
How did I get out of this?
"Got you!" He snarled.
I shuddered, fumbling, spinning, and calling the lance of light again, thrusting it. He let out a howl of agony as it cut through his shoulder.
"Fucking bitch, I'll fucking kill you!"
He stumbled and staggered, yanking at the lance in his shoulder. I ran as his eyes blazed with malice and hunger.
I ran, cutting through the forest again, trying to get free. Panic was clawing at me as I heard him getting closer. His steps echoed like thunder. Then, I reached the edge of a cliff and looked out and down into the abyss below.
Dead end.
Oren chuckled, coming up behind me.
"You see, Lucy, there's no escaping this. You're mine now, and there's nothing you can do about it."
I turned to face Oren, trying not to show my fear. I tried to reach for another lance, to conjure one, but the surge of power didn't come. His malevolent grin glinted as the moonlight reflected on his teeth.
He drew closer and closer. "If you say you're sorry, maybe I'll only leave a few bruises... I hope I don't have to return you to them without faculties... You still have to raise pups, after all."
I shuddered, stepping back. The wind rushed past me. I considered jumping just to get away from him. Panic surged through my veins as he drew close enough to touch. He smirked and reached out.
"Good little--"
The air heated suddenly. Light blinded me. Force and heat filled the space between us, and I heard him scream. I blinked through the spots in my eyes until my vision cleared. The forest had been leveled as far as I could see. I blinked, unable to understand. Then, the ground trembled beneath me. I shrieked as I tumbled down. Falling into the unknown, I felt a mixture of fear and hope.
"Wake up, Lucy," I heard David's voice. "I'll see you soon."
"David?" I asked into the darkness as it grew darker.
I opened my eyes as the first light of dawn broke through the trees. I hadn't been moved much, just laid down on a pallet.
"Hey."
I looked up as Blue crouched beside me and offered me a steaming cup. "How are you feeling?"
I swallowed. "I... I was in a vision. T-There was Selene and Oren, and I heard David's voice..."
She hushed me gently, tugging the blanket around my shoulders a little tighter.
"Deep breath and calm down, okay. We're about to head back to the Estate."
"David?" I asked.
She looked grim and shook her head. "Maggie hasn't said anything."
My jaw trembled. I struggled to my feet and went to the jeep. There was light and murmuring coming from inside. Blue escorted me into the other jeep that followed just behind the jeep David was in.
I know I heard David's voice. Didn't that mean he would wake up soon? He wouldn't have said that to me if he didn't mean it.
The jeeps drove through the forest back to the Estate. There were healers already waiting there. They weren't all witches. Some of them looked like elves. The jeep came to a stop in front of the Estate's back entrance, which led to a kitchen, I guessed.
Without wasting a second, the team was at the door of the jeep and levitating David out.
My eyes burned as I saw him, pale, barely breathing. Most of his skin had turned black. I followed them through the Estate until they didn't allow me to follow.
Time seemed to slow down as we waited for news about David's condition. I paced outside. My head pounding. My whole body was tired, but I couldn't sit down.
"Hey," Trent said, coming with a pair of cushions. "Take a seat, drink some coffee with me."
My jaw trembled, and I sank down beside him, taking the cup gratefully.
He took a deep breath. "Why don't you tell me what you remember? Amos has already started investigating the attack. We've got some statements from the Escort."
I shuddered and started to tell him about Selene in that woman's body just to have something else to think about.
Trent took notes, bobbing his head and looking grave all the while. I didn't know what to think.
"He'll be okay, won't he?"
Trent took a slow slip. "Hard to say..."
"Why?"
He sighed. "The scales are a good thing, and so is the giant black wolf. It means all that training has paid off, and so long as it's not certain poisons, he should be fine."
"Certain poisons?"
He nodded. "Due to his bloodline and the black wolf's nature, there's potential for him to eventually be immune to all poisons, but I don't know if that had settled in him by the time he'd been hit... It's pretty clear that whoever attacked you knows enough about his bloodline, so they probably used everything they could get their hands on. Which means there's a larger chance than I like to admit that he..."
He winced. "It's a miracle he made it as far as he did carrying you after getting hit."
My heart lurched. Then, the door opened, and a weary-looking woman draped in long, flowing robes came stumbling out.
