Lucy
I stepped out of the classroom, my backpack slung over one shoulder. Another day of human classes was behind me, and now it was time for something entirely different—my second dance lesson with David. My heart fluttered with a mixture of excitement and nervousness as I headed to the designated meeting spot. We had practiced a little since the last time, but I wasn't sure how the instructor would feel about what little progress I felt like I was making.
The Blood Moon escort accompanying me flashed a reassuring smile. It was a woman I didn't recognize, but she wore the same suit and crest as all the others had.
"Relax, Lucy. Just make sure he doesn't step on your toes," she teased, and I couldn't help but laugh.
"I'll try."
When we arrived at the Blood Moon Estate, I made my way to the grand ballroom. The moment I stepped inside, my eyes landed on David, who was still dressed in a sharp, dark three-piece suit. His collar was undone, and his tie was missing. I was struck for a moment by the way he looked at him. Until I had met Tony and Matt, the only time I had ever seen a man in a suit was on television.
As I thought about it, Tony always seemed to be wearing his suit like armor. The one time I remember seeing Matt in a suit, it felt like a costume.
David wore his suit like... well, a suit. I didn't know how to explain it, but I liked it. My face heated as I tried to push that thought away. Now wasn't the time to be thinking about it.
"I really don't think it's necessary for the first lesson," David said.
The instructor scoffed. "It wouldn't be right if she didn't."
Were they talking about me?
"I don't want her uncomfortable," David said.
"Beauty is pain, and there is little more beautiful than the art of dance!"
I approached them cautiously, wondering if I should give them some space. My eyes dropped to the heels the instructor held in her hand.
David raised an eyebrow, his expression a mix of amusement and stubbornness. "They seem a bit too high for her for her first try, is all I'm saying."
My curiosity got the best of me, and I couldn't resist joining in.
"What's going on?"
David sighed as the instructor turned to me and held up the pair of shoes. They were elegant heels with straps that would wrap around my ankles.
"These are for you," she explained, her tone softening as she addressed me. "We're going to start learning the Moon Tango today, and these will give you the right amount of lift and stability."
I winced at the heels, eyeing the height of the heel.
"I... I've never..."
"It's the perfect time to try!"
David sighed. "How about a compromise?"
I bit my lip, looking at the shoes. He took them from the instructor and led me to a bench nearby before crouching down.
"I'm sorry," David said with a wry tone as he removed my shoes.
"Oh, I could--"
He hushed me, setting my shoes aside and peeling off my socks.
I couldn't help but blush at the attention.
"I should have known she would be insistent, but I'll try to make it as comfortable as possible." He flashed me a grin. "Beauty might be pain, but that doesn't have to be physical pain."
He bent his head and laced the straps around my ankles before I felt a tingling sensation wash over my feet. I shivered, feeling it rush up my legs. With my new shoes securely fastened, David offered his hands to me and helped me onto my feet.
I was definitely taller, but the discomfort I expected didn't come.
He smiled. "How do they feel?"
I shrugged. "Okay, I guess."
He nodded. "Good. Let me know if you need more cushion, okay?"
I nodded. David offered me his arm, and together, we headed to the center of the ballroom.
The instructor stood nearby with a remote in her hand and a mischievous glint in her eyes. I looked up at David. His eyes were warm as he looked down at me.
"The Moon Tango is a dance of passion and intensity," the instructor began. She started to play music and dimmed the lights a little. The song was slow and sultry. The way David's eyes darkened made my heart race. "It's a dance that brings two souls closer, both physically and emotionally. We'll start slow."
David led me slowly, step by step. I stumbled, but he never let me fall. It felt a bit like our legs were going to be tangled together.
"It would be easier if you were a bit closer," she said with a wry tone.
"Not yet," David said, looking down at me. "It will be fine when you get used to it."
I bit my lip and stepped a little closer to him so our clothes brushed together. His eyes flickered with light.
"I'm okay," I whispered. "I promise."
David pressed his lips together and nodded. "Let me know if you change your mind."
I nodded and let him lead me through the basic steps again.
"Much better," she said.
David seemed stiff, keeping us as far apart as we had been when I stepped closer, but this close I could still smell his cologne and feel the heat of his body.
We turned slowly, practically walking through the steps. His touch was gentle, yet there was something in his eyes that sent shivers down my spine. He tightened his grip on my hand.
"Still okay?"
I nodded.
"Let's speed it up a bit, hm?"
The music grew faster and faster, and the faster it grew, the closer we grew until our bodies pressed closely together. I could feel the rise and fall of David's chest with each breath, and his eyes, glowing with a mesmerizing shade of purple, held me captive. I didn't know how it happened or that it could happen, but I felt lost in his eyes, in the heat of us being so close together.
My blood was heating as he turned us sharply. Relaxing a little as his gaze grew more intense. I felt a bit breathless as we were swept away in it. I felt feverish with something that I didn't have words for. It was tingling and electric.
His jaw was clenched. His nostrils flared, and the purple glow of his eyes brightened. Something was pulling at me, pulling me closer to David. The ballroom seemed to vanish until it was just us, but it was nothing like the waltz. Every movement, every step and turn felt like sparks ready to burst into flames. The intensity of his gaze was magnetic, pulling me closer and closer to the edge of something that I both wanted and feared.
Fear? I frowned at the thought as he turned us sharply. My feet kept up with him even as I tried to figure out that feeling. I had nothing to fear from David. I knew this. I felt it. He'd shown it in every way he could.
Why would I be afraid?
Was it me who was afraid or the Moon Goddess?
I tightened my grip on his hand and pressed closer to him. He let out a low rumbling sound that made heat pool between my legs. No, I wasn't afraid of him. I wasn't afraid of anything David would do to me, given half the chance.
The Moon Goddess was flooding her fear into me. It only made me more sure that being with David was the best thing I could do and all the feelings that had been growing between us.
He stepped forward, sliding his leg between mine and turning us. The suddenness of his movement left me breathless. A mixture of longing and confusion swirled within me.
I bit back a yelp as I shifted my weight, and it spent a spike of pleasure through me. His eyes widened, and he broke us out of the spin quickly, keeping from jostling me anymore.
He twirled me. My heels skidded across the floor. I thought I would fall and almost scrambled to grab him, but he lowered me into a dip that felt as though it was supposed to happen.
For a few moments, all I could feel was the heat of his body pressed against me and the pounding of his heart in time with mine. Something pushed and pulled in me. I felt my magic tingling everywhere we touched.
I could barely breathe. He leaned closer. I swear he was going to kiss me. I wanted it. I really wanted it. I lifted my face, hoping to close the distance.
I closed my eyes, wanting him to just kiss me already. I felt the heat of his breath on my face. I felt the warmth of his lips getting closer.
Clapping broke the moment, and he pulled back sharply.
My eyes snapped open, but before I could say anything, the instructor spoke.
"Wonderful!"
