Lucy
I hung up and tried to steady my breathing. The Council representative was stammering and trying to argue, but it seemed like there was no turning back. She looked a little fearful as Lucian answered his phone. The anger on his face started to fade.
“The Bond of the Moon doesn’t just stipulate that the Blue Moon Pack can take us in,” Lucian said, glaring at the woman. “The Blood Moon Pack qualifies too, so who are you working for the Blue Moon Pack? Oren? The Council?”
She sneered.
“My place with the Hecate Coven, will grant us sanctuary in Hecate City. Duke's connection to the Blood Moon Pack satisfies the terms of the Bond of the Moon way more than that forced mating ceremony.”
“But—”
“Dagon has already sent the documents to Trent and Riley," he said firmly. “We’re not going with those bastard.”
She flushed. “It’s too late for any of that! The arrangements have already been made.”
“What arrangements?”
I heard the Moon Goddess laughing again and shuddered.
“L-Lucy?” Duke whispered, his voice haunted. “D-Did you hear that?”
I nodded, trying to keep my breathing even.
“What arrangements?” Lucian growled aiming his staff at her. “Speak!”
“Blue Moon is already on the way to collect you!” She shrieked. “And there’s nothing you can do about it!”
Lucian’s eyes widened. “How long before they get here?”
She sneered. “They should be here within the hour, so you’d all be better off going on nicely. Blue Moon has the favor of the Council due to Oren’s age.”
My gut churned. There’s no way this could be happening. Lucian’s eyes bulged, he looked like he was going to kill her. I couldn't believe what was happening.
I hurriedly dialed Dagon's number, my heart pounding in my chest as I waited for him to pick up. When he finally answered, his voice sounded tense and rushed.
"Lucy, I'm facing a system issue while trying to submit the application. The Council's database is acting up, and it's causing delays," Dagon said, his frustration evident in his tone.
My stomach dropped at the news.
"The representative said Blue Moon will be here within an hour because they have the 'favor of the Council' due to Oren's age," I blurted out, panic creeping into my voice.
Dagon's voice hardened. "We need more time to get this application through. Riley, Trent, and I will converge on the main Council location as soon as possible, but we need at least an hour."
I quickly hung up and turned to Lucian. "Dagon's facing an issue with the application, but they're on their way to the main Council Hall. We just need to stall Blue Moon for as long as we can."
Lucian's expression hardened. I could see him thinking before he smirked.
He hung up and made another call.
“Yeah, this is Lucian. Deploy the barrier at full power.”
When he got off the phone, he sank into his seat. The woman looked pale.
“What did you do?”
He smiled. “Until we’re in their custody all of this is just paperwork right? They have to sign for us, so to speak. We’re in this room, they’re trapped at the edge of the city and no one I need to do anything is a werewolf.”
She gasped and turned to the door. As the Council representative rushed out of the room, I could feel the tension in the air.
“Uncle Lu’?” Jessie asked as Lucian swaddled the child in his arms. “What’s going on?”
I stood and went to the window. I could see the anti-werewolf barrier rippling and falling through the sky. I could see the energy crackling in the air.
“Will it be fast enough?” I asked. “W-Will it hold?”
“Take a seat,” Lucian said. “Let’s see.”
I frowned and we all gathered around him as he sat on the floor. He took my hand and Jessie’s. I took Duke’s hand and soon we were all holding hands with the baby cradled in his lap. I felt power stirring around us. I saw symbols and runes drifting through the air, glowing softly.
Shimmering liquid appeared in my mind and washed over me. Then, my mind went blank. I could see Hecate City as if I was flying over it. My heart pounded with anxiety. I had never experienced anything like this before.
As we soared over the city, I could see Enforcer vehicles rushing out to each of the main roads leading into the city. Then a glowing barrier, shimmering with magical energy continued to expand over the city. Members of the Coven’s forces were stationed at various points around the city around the building we were in.
“This is called scrying,” Lucian said in my mind. “I’m a living conduit of the barrier right now which means I can see so to speak. I’m leading you all to search for the Blue Moon jerks. Unfortunately, Lucy… you’re the best magnet for this… You and Duke.”
I wanted to ask what he meant by that for Duke, but I couldn’t find the words. My stomach clenched in terror, but I felt myself being pulled forward. Then, I could see a small group of cars, one of them was a sprinter van coming up from behind. They hadn’t made it to the city’s edge yet. I watched a group of enforcers drive toward the road where they would be coming in.
“How did they know?”
“They have their own ways of scrying for people. I sounded the alarm,” Lucian said. Then, he chuckled as the barrier closed off the road several miles before they’d reached it. A bit of relaxation filled me.
“Do you want to stay for the show?” Lucian asked. I swallowed.
I didn’t want to see them, but I knew that I wouldn’t feel safe or steady if I didn’t see for myself that they couldn’t get to us, so I nodded.
"Are you sure about this, Lucy?" Duke asked, concern evident in his voice.
I smiled, his voice felt warm as it brushed through my mind, familiar. “How could we not have realized that we had to be related?”
He chuckled. “I don’t know… Maybe we weren’t ready to hope either.”
I took a deep breath. “I’ll be fine. I… I’m not alone anymore. I’ll be fine.”
“He’s not going to be happy,” Lucian warned. “They’re irrational, especially Oren.”
“You’ve met him before?” I asked. “When? Isn’t he… a lot older than you?”
“He is, even though he doesn’t act like it.” His lips twitched. “Unfortunately, I have. We’ll talk about it sometime in the future. Don’t let anything the Council tell you fool you. He’s been insane from the moment he got of age. He’s only gotten worse. That massacre that sent him to jail wasn’t even the tip of the iceberg.”
I shuddered. “Do you think he knows about me?”
“I think you’re the main reason he decided on this course of action.”
“You don’t think it was Tony?”
“Oren isn’t the type to have shared that kind of information if he didn’t have to. And if they had known about it before, they would have used it already.”
I shuddered at the thought. I wasn’t sure whether or not to be grateful that Oren was as terrible as Lucian was making him out to be or just horrified that if anything had been different, I would already be back at Blue Moon.
The Enforcers got out and quickly set up a physical barrier right inside the barrier line. It was so strange to be watching them, knowing that they couldn’t see us. Then, one of the women turned and looked at me. Time seemed to slow as we met gazes, and I realized that she could see me. My heart lurched with fear.
Her lips twitched. “You really do look like your mother.”
I gasped as she smiled at me. “The pixie curls suited her too.”
She turned away and went back to work making the barrier as the cars came over the hill and into view.
“S-She could see me?” I asked.
Lucian chuckled in my mind. “She’s another relative, a little more undercover than everyone else since she’s not a werewolf.”
“Here they come!” The woman said. “Everybody remember the rules. You don’t exit the barrier if you can help it. We hold them here until we get the okay. Talk, force, distraction, whatever it takes.”
The answering call made my heart race. I hoped, beyond hope that Dagon, Riley, and Trent would be able to submit the documentation before a fight had to break out.
Every second felt like an eternity as the cars started to grow nearer.
“Deep breath, Lucy,” Lucian said. “Steady heart. I’m not going to let those fuckers take you. That wench is going to have to find another person to fulfill her stupid plans.”
I head the Moon Goddess laughing again and clenched my fists.
“I’ll be okay.”
I felt a mix of fear and determination. Whatever happened felt like it was going to be a turning point for the rest of my life.
