42. The Blue Moon Pack

Lucy

I turned back to look at the four women on the other side of the room. The two younger ones started glaring at me with glowing eyes. The two older ones looked at me like I wasn’t worth the time.
“How old are you, girl?” The older brunette asked.
“Eighteen.”
Her eye twitched. “You will address me properly, girl.”
I blinked at her. “I don’t know who you are.”
“Luna,” she hissed. “Don’t you know anything?”
“No.”
“And you’re supposed to be luna of the Blue Moon pack?” The younger brunette asked, sneering at me. “What a joke. You’re undeserving of the position. You’ll be out of it within a month!”
I held back the words I wanted to say, but that didn’t seem to stop the two older ones from looking at me with suspicion.
“I suppose you have plenty of time to bear children… Even though you are a half-breed,” the older blonde said, looking down at the tea set between us. “Don’t you know anything about etiquette?”
“No,” I said, shifting as my stomach churned as I heard Tina’s warning in the back of my head.
If you get pregnant, Lucy, getting out will be so much harder.
I looked down, wondering how much more sex it would take before they got me pregnant. My skin started to crawl at the thought.
“I suppose not having been raised by humans. What pack is your werewolf parents from?”
“I don’t know.”
“How do you even know you are a half-breed?” One of the brunettes asked.
“I turned into a wolf once.” Shivering at the memory. I tried not to think about it.
“Once?” The younger blonder ask.
“She’s a half-breed. It’s an act of the Goddess that she can shift at all,” the older blonde said. “How did you meet Alpha Tony and Alpha Matt?”
“They bought me from an auction.”
They all reared back with disgust. My stomach sank.
“Mother,” one of them said. “You can’t expect anyone to stand for a half-breed, sold at auction, to be the luna of the Blue Moon Pack!”
She glared at me. “She’s not even smart enough to lie.”
“Tony said I shouldn’t because you’d know,” I said. I swallowed and clasped my hands together, waiting for this to be over.
The older blonde one cocked an eyebrow at me. “I am not concerned about you remaining with the Blue Moon Pack for long. I’ve known half-breeds to die in childbirth when impregnated by alphas.”
Fear made my blood go cold as she poured her own tea. The older brunette hissed.
“The least she could do is serve us tea.”
“Would you want your tea tainted by an ill-bred half-breed?” She asked as she made her tea and sat back. “Listen, as I do not want to repeat myself, and I don’t intend to. This is a kindness. A luna’s duty is to her alpha. You will sleep with them as they wish, please them, and bear whatever children you can before you die. This is the least you can do for their protection. When you are dead, you should take solace in the fact that when they take mates, your children will be cared for by the pack, but it is likely that even with Alpha Tony and Alpha Matt’s lineage, they may end up dead before they reach the age of majority. The Blue Moon Pack is not known for allowing the weak to live.”
I felt sick. She finished drinking before she stood.
“Be hopeful that their father does not return before you’ve had a chance to die peacefully.” She dusted off the skirt of her dress. “I suspect that some member of the Blue Moon Pack may put the entire pack out of its misery and kill you before you can become pregnant. Don’t expect any other luna meetings. It would be best if you give up any dreams of being luna.”
“I don’t have any,” I said softly.
“Good. No need to walk us out. I understand you don’t have the sense to even try. Best regain your strength before they have need of you again.” She turned, leading them toward the door. “Come along. She is little more than a plaything. You don’t have to worry about her.”
They left with a soft click of the door. The silence that followed was filled with dread and anxiety. All I could think about was Tina’s words.
I should have left with Tina when I had the chance, but now that I hadn’t, what was I supposed to do?
My eyes pricked with tears then, and then I heard her voice at the back of my mind.
I’ll find you on social! I’ll see you at the luncheon.
I stared up. Hope filled me.
The luncheon was my only hope.
When they left, I remained in the parlor for a long while. I was a little cold but mostly sleepy. The quiet was so nice. I hadn’t realized how much I had missed the quiet of that little room I had at my adoptive parents’ house until it seemed like I had no quiet at all.
Matt talked in his sleep. Tony always made noises too. Usually, I would be too tired from all the sex they wanted to notice, but even when they weren’t having their way with me, there was noise. Tony was either on the phone or getting ready to leave. Matt talking or trying to get on Tony’s nerves.
I got up and leaned out of the parlor. Their beta was nearby, and I turned away from him. I tried to get upstairs and found the door to my room closed. Hope filled me again, and I opened it.
“Luna, the wall—”
I closed the door behind me and sank against the door, grateful for the closing door. I leaned back against it with a deep sigh as my eyes pricked with tears. I pressed my lips together and pulled my knees to my chest, letting my tears fall.
If everything that Tony and Matt had been telling me was true, could I keep from getting pregnant before then?
