28. The dragon territory
Matt
I was dizzy, but I kept running in the direction Tony told me to. I could barely make out the shape of leaves beneath me, let alone the trees. I was so dizzy with blood loss. It was only pure will and Tony’s voice in my head that was keeping me going. I wish I could help more, but I had lost too much blood. We ran for what felt like too long, using our enhanced speed to thin them out. Tony would take care of the few who managed to catch up with us as they came, giving me some time to rest in between bursts of running at top speed.
I stumbled as my stomach lurched and the world started to spin. I heard Tony tearing a werewolf apart and sunk my head into the river, drinking from it in hopes that it would help. The wound in my side was closed, but it wasn’t leaking as much blood as it had been earlier. Still, my fur was mostly red from the blood leaking from the wound on my back.
Tony came back and rushed past me. I ran after him, shaking off the dizziness as much as I could. The chase went on for what felt like hours before we crossed a border. I didn’t know whose border it was, but it hardly mattered. We just had to keep running for us and for Lucy.
A roar filled the air and something lumbered near us. Burning red eyes glared at us as Tony turned back to fight off another wolf. The large shadow shifted into a human form and walked out, glaring at us. I didn’t recognize him, but when he turned and opened his mouth to let out a large bank of fire at the werewolves that were following us, I had to guess that he was at least a little friendly.
Tony shifted and staggered to his feet. “We—”
“Go,” he said. “I will deal with them.”
Tony hesitated a moment but shifted back. Let’s go!
I followed him, looking back just once as another wall of fire heated the air and lit the area. I heard wolves howling in agony and men screaming in pain. The fire turned bright blue, curling across the forest floor, but nothing seemed to be burning other than the werewolves and humans who had been chasing us.
Who was that?
Later! We have to get to Lucy.
Is this why you were pushing Peter? You’ve been holding out on me.
Tony snorted as we leaped over another river and ran deeper into the forest. The sound of screams of pain faded and soon, there was nothing but the sound of the quiet forest around us. My hearty was still racing from all the running, but I could feel a bit of the adrenaline of being chased starting to fade.
You’ve been disinterest.
If we’re friends with dragons, I damn sure what to know!
Everyone knew that while dragon shifters were few and far between, they were powerful.
Is it really okay that we’re just crossing through dragon territory?
We’re not crossing through dragon territory, Tony said, leaping between rocks and sliding down the hill ahead of me. We’re crossing through our territory.
What? What is a dragon doing—
Later, Matt. Just focus. Are you alright to keep running? We’re almost there.
I hesitated. Honestly, I wanted to lay down and sleep but I pushed that thought away.
I’ll be fine.
Tony
He was lying, I could tell it in his voice, but I didn’t say anything. To be fair, I was lying too. Our Estate was at least a few more miles away. I slowed my pace a bit as we got closer and closer to the Estate. I could hear the pack moving around and the patrol unit nearby. I let out a warning howl, announcing that we were there as we crossed the patrol line and the estate started to appear through the trees.
I broke through the tree line of the forest around the estate and shifted into my human form. Everyone seemed nervous, looking around and seemingly busy. A few of them glanced at me with wide eyes. Matt followed just behind me. He stood on shaky legs and stumbled after me into the Estate.
He fell on his hands and knees and let out a retching sound before covering his mouth.
“Get bandages and a silver anecdote!” I yelled. I heard someone moving around below. Matt pushed himself to his feet and stumbled after me. His hand was over his mouth. I slowed and made him lean on me as we headed up the stairs and down the hall. When we reached our section of the second floor, our beta and his daughter weren’t there. The door to the luna’s suite was open. The wood and metal was bent and splintered, and Lucy was gone. The doctor was seated nearby with a small lab kit on the table and a bowl.
“Where is she?” I asked. “Is she—”
“No one told you?” She asked blinking at me.
I grit my teeth. “Would I be asking if—”
“She’s gone.”
My heart lurched. Matt let out a pained sound, slumping against me as he retched again. I clenched my jaw as my eyes started to burn. It felt like someone had punched me in the gut. How could she be gone? I looked at the tray and the bowl that was on the table beside the doctor. I headed towards the bed expecting to find a body, but the bed was empty.
“Alpha,” our beta said, coming up behind us. “Almost everyone is accounted for. I’ve sent a patrol unit to track them, but we haven’t been able to find out how they’ve left the estate. Did you put a tracker on her?”
“What do you mean?” Matt asked as I turned around. “S-She just said—”
“When I got the door open, she was gone. All that was left was the cart and the empty bowl.”
I froze. “And?”
“There wasn’t a scent of death. It smelled like poison, but that’s all. There weren’t even any other scents in the room. We’re looking into who served the food. Everyone from the kitchens has been corralled downstairs.”
I clenched my jaw and turned toward him. He looked nervous, but he met my gaze, awaiting my orders.
“Then, we should have a chat.”
