53. Need a doctor

Tony

I woke up and felt restless. I paced. I hated. Every step I took felt like I was losing control, but I couldn’t help it. Something was wrong. Matt seemed on the edge and restless all night. I don’t think he slept at all. This morning our bond was seething. I felt Matt’s anger and panic, but he didn’t say anything to me. Instead, he seemed to be simmering and confused. The anger started to grow as I got into the car with our luggage and headed back to the Blue Moon Estate.
Matt, calm the fuck down. What’s happening? Is Lucy in danger?
It’s the doctor. She’s turned her against us. I’ll fucking kill her!
Another spike of fury went through me, and I cursed, pressing the gas pedal so the car lurched forward. The first thing I thought of was David. Were they connected somehow? In league to steal Lucy from us?
I pressed the gas pedal to the floor until I could almost smell the engine’s metal starting to burn. No sirens followed as I raced down the highway. The car skidded and nearly tipped to a halt as someone came flying through one of the windows. I didn’t stop to figure out who it was. I jumped out and shifted, so sure that there was an attack on the Estate. I heard Matt screaming.
“Lucy!”
I growled and charged into the house, lifting my nose. I didn’t smell blood or anyone foreign, but that didn’t make me relax at all. I heard running footsteps and heavy, panicked breathing. I went after the sound and realized that it was Lucy as I entered the ballroom. She slowed to a stop at the edge of the ballroom, dropped to her knees, and crawled towards the furthest corner. She put her arms over her head and shuddered, barely breathing as if she was trying to be quiet.
Then, I smelled blood. Was it Lucy’s? I couldn’t be sure.
The doctor came down the stairs cursing with Matt just on her heels. He snarled and lunged at her. She ducked, skidding down the steps and around the corner. He landed and sprung at her. She turned viciously. I saw the glint of the silver blade in the air. I smelled blood. Then, he let out a howl of agony. I growled and rushed towards her.
As I leaped towards her, trying to bite into her shoulder, time seemed to slow. I blinked, and she was gone. I felt the bite of the knife through my side, deep and burning with silver and wolfsbane. I smelled my own blood and howled. I tried to swipe at her as I tumbled through the air, but I couldn’t reach her. She was already running into the ballroom.
“Lucy?” She called. “Lucy!”
I landed hard on my shoulder, but I pushed to my feet. Furious and rushing after her as she headed into the ballroom. She wasn’t going to take Lucy from us. I’d kill her before I let that happen. The familiar red haze seemed to fill my vision as I streaked across the ballroom.
I roared at her, demanding her not to get any closer to Lucy. Then, I ran into a solid, invisible wall. Pain exploded in my face as I bounced back and tumbled. The necklace around her neck was glowing as she kneeled beside Lucy and smashed a bottle on the ground.
I snapped my jaw, running into the barrier. What the hell was she doing to our mate? I’d kill her. I’d kill her.
The soft steam that rose out of the bottle filled the air. I stumbled as I felt it starting to work. It was some sort of sedative. Lucy slumped against her as she drew her into her arms, stroking her hair. It was short again, shorter than it had been before I left.
All I could think of was when Lucy told me there were no scissors in the bathroom. I couldn’t move a muscle. It wasn’t making me sleepy so much as feeling heavy.
Lucy burst into tears, sobbing into the doctor’s chest.
“It’s alright now,” she whispered. “It’s alright. You’re safe. It’s okay. It’s okay…
I shifted back into my human form, yet the heaviness seemed to only get worse.
“Get away from her,” I growled. “You… our mate.”
She looked at me. “Your brother scared her half to death with his nonsense, and you should both be ashamed of yourselves.”
She turned back to Lucy. “It’s alright. I’ll get you some tea, okay? Can you stand?”
Lucy shuddered, clinging to her, then she leaned into Yvonne’s arms. Yvonne lifted her onto her back and walked around me, shooting me a glare. The smoke continued to spread, and I found myself practically helpless. The rage in me felt like it was being crushed under a heavy block of solid stone. I tried to move, but it was so hard. Fear filled me. I felt helpless. What the hell was this smoke?
Matt?
I can’t move, he said. She’s taking Lucy. She’s taking her away!
I struggled, pushing myself over and trying to hear. She wasn’t walking toward the front door. Instead, she was heading toward the hallway of her quarters.
She’s not, I said. Are you okay?
It burns… It burns so much. I was just trying to protect Lucy. We have to get rid of her. That doctor. She’s done something to her!
We can’t.
What do you mean we can’t?
I growled. If you had been involved or paying attention when we took over, you would know that no other doctor or healer is willing to work with us.
He growled. We don’t need one!
I scoffed. Yes, Matt, we do.
As much as I hated to admit it. We did need a doctor.
We’ll find someone else. The SCF can’t expect us to keep her if she’s interfering with our bond.
What do you mean?
The marks are gone, Tony! His voice was full of pain. The panic and terror were tearing through our bond. She did something to Lucy. I know she did. We have to get rid of her!
Soon, the smoke faded, and the doctor came back. I heard her heading towards Matt, who growled at her.
“If you bite me, I’m going to cut you again,” she said. “And I’ll put Lucy in my car and go home. You’ll never see her again.”
I growled. “We would find you.”
I heard her scoff. “I’ll get to you in a second.”
“Where is Lucy?” Matt asked. “What have you done with her, witch?”
“Resting, heavily sedated, and scared to death.” She huffed. “I told you to pull your head out of your ass and listen to what she was saying, but you werewolves know everything, don’t you?”
“She’s our mate. She’s not afraid of us unless you’ve been poisoning her mind against us,” I growled, dragging myself across the ground. “I’ll get you replaced as soon as I can. Imprisoned for tampering with our bond--”
“Yeah, yeah,” she said. “You all and your bonds. Idiots.”
Matt grunted. I smelled the bitter scent of silver antidote in a wound. Then, there were other footsteps. Our beta walked in and came to me.
“Alpha, please calm down,” he said. “It’s not like that at all.”
I glared at him. “You have until this wears off to explain what the hell is going on.”
He went still, standing over me, and he kneeled before beginning to tell me what happened from the moment Lucy came into the luna’s suite and saw them working on the doors.
