Lucy
When I heard David’s voice mentioning the ring, I felt my panic stop. I gasped, bringing my hands together and fumbling with the moving ring Riley had given me. I tried to remember how to activate it. I couldn’t breathe, and then I felt the warmth wash over me. My skin tingled and everything sped away from me before I landed softly on a cold floor.
“Ma’am?”
I shuddered at the kind voice and reached for my throat.
“It’s okay,” someone soothed. “It’s okay.”
I felt hands at the nape of my neck as I kept trying to breathe. The knot loosened and I sucked in a deep breath when the bag came off. A kind-looking woman was kneeling beside me. She cupped my face and stared into my eyes.
“Can you tell me where you came from?”
Her words washed over me and I felt myself answering. She listened as I told her everything that had happened. She looked down at my hand and lifted it to look at the moving rind. She fiddled with it before she started talking to the rest of the people in the office.
“We’ll move out immediately.”
Then, the enforcers were moving around. I reached out to one of them.
“I want to go with you…” I said. “M-My friends…”
She nodded. “Okay.”
I felt a mix of relief and anxiety as I got to my feet and stumbled after the officers towards one of their cars. Someone turned on their sirens and I climbed into the nearest car. It had all happened so fast.
"Are you sure you're okay, miss?" one of the officers asked, concern etched on his face.
"I-I'm shaken, but I'll be fine," I replied, my voice still shaky from the adrenaline coursing through my veins. "I just want to make sure they’re alright. D-David was there, but I don’t know how many others were there.”
“You don’t have to worry. We’ll be there as soon as we can. We have radio confirmation that the confrontation is still in progress.”
Within minutes, I recognized where we were headed. I felt a sense of relief knowing that we were near, but I couldn't help but worry about everyone’s safety.
As we reached the scene, I saw David and Trent, their faces still flushed from the fight. The whole front of David’s suit looked like it had been singed. There were scorch marks on the ground and a charred body in the shape of a wolf on the ground. Blood was everywhere. Blood Moon's escort forces were efficiently securing the attackers and making sure the area was safe. I got out of the car as the enforcers flooded into the area. David looked up as approached him. He opened his arms to me and I went straight to him. He pulled me into a tight embrace. Relief filled me.
David hushed me, stroking my hair. The scent of his burnt clothing burned my nose, but all I could hear David speaking in a soothing tone, trying to get me to match his breathing. I swallowed, shuddering as guilt ripped through me. I had frozen, and worse than that, I had left them behind.
“Easy,” David said pulling back. “You did well, Miss Officer.”
My jaw trembled as tears stung my eyes. “A-Are they okay?”
"The girls are alright," David reported, his voice a mix of exhaustion and relief. "They're shaken. Trent’s healing them as much as possible. It’s going to be a bit of an incident. They’re probably going to be sore… and there’s something else you should know.”
I frowned and looked up at him.
“Michelle is a werewolf.”
My eyes widened. I didn’t know exactly what that could mean for Sarah and Amy, but as I thought about her relationship with Peter, I couldn’t help but be nervous.
“I don’t think she knows,” David said. “They’re all going to be interviewed by the SCF, though… There’s no telling how much they saw.”
“W-Was it bad? Why are you all burnt up?”
He flushed. “I’m… still not completely sure about that.”
He yawned. “I do know that I could sleep for a week.”
“Me too…”
David's eyes softened with understanding as he brushed a strand of hair away from my face. "You’ll get to. I'm just glad you're safe."
“Same,” Trent said, joining us. “We've got the attackers in custody. Some of the guns were loaded with silver and wolfsbane, but most of them were werewolves, so it’s hard to say exactly who hired them. I’d bet at least two different contracts."
He looked at me. “Both of them… after you.”
David tightened his grip on me. “We need to talk… I had a vision in the middle.”
“I-I did too.”
David looked at me. Trent nodded.
“We’ll talk. I’ll wrap up things with the enforcers and we’ll take down your statements. Hang tight… As for the girls?”
“They’ll come back to the Estate, at least for the night.” He glanced over the fallen groceries. “We’ll have to make a stop at Coven Hall first.” He sighed. “This wasn’t a planned grocery trip, or a scheduled one, which means they’re being watched where they are.”
I went cold. “It’s my fault.”
“You can’t blame yourself,” David said. “The only person responsible is the person who gave the order.”
I felt a mixture of fear and anger churned through me.
"What do we do now?" I asked.
"For now, we’ll all rest. I’ll have Amos beef up the security around the Estate and the university," Trent replied. "We'll also coordinate with the Hecate Coven police to keep an eye out for any suspicious activity."
I leaned against David, listening to people move around. Amy, Sarah, and Michelle woke up slowly, groggy and the Blood Moon escorts got them into the vehicles. They lay the back seat down to make a temporary cot in the back for them.
Soon, the enforcers came to take our statements, and then David got me into an SUV with him and Trent.
“What was the character of this vision?” Trent asked.
I cleared my throat and told them about what the Moon Goddess told me. David went stiff beside me, and I wondered if now was the time to ask if he had been in my dreams on purpose, but I held back. Instead, I told them that it wasn’t the first time she appeared to me.
Trent was taking notes. David took my hand, but he said nothing. His expression was hard as I finished.
“I’m going to look into this…” Trent said slowly. “David, you okay?”
He nodded stiffly. The SUV glided toward Coven Hall.
"I'm sorry you had to go through that," he said, his voice tinged with regret. “I’m sorry you have to hear her voice at all.”
My lips twitched. “Have you heard her before?”
“Not as clearly as I had during the fight.” His nose twitched. “My dad used to tell me to ignore her, resist her, and put her from my mind at all costs… That she was more of an enemy than anything good for werewolves.”
My shoulders slumped. It seemed that he didn’t know that he was in my dreams, or maybe that wasn’t David, but some other black wolf. As we pulled up at Coven Hall, I couldn’t help but wonder what would happen next. Sarah, Amy, and Michelle had been wrapped in thick blankets and set up in comfy looking chairs. They looked visibly shocked and bewildered.
“Lucy…” Amy sniffled. “Are you okay?”
I nodded shakily. “I’m alright.
I settled into the room, I couldn't help but feel a sense of unease.
Riley came in to start asking them about the attack. Michelle stayed quiet for most of it.
“Are you Michelle?”
She nodded shakily.
“I understand that you’re the owner of the knife we found on the scene.”
She nodded again.
“Can you tell me how you acquired a silver knife?”
Michelle cleared her throat. “It… was a gift.”
My eyes widened. I looked over at David.
“Was it the gift that Peter gave you?”
She nodded.
“Why did he give you a knife?”
“He wanted… me to be able to defend myself when I was coming home late or going around on my own,” she said. “We met while he was teaching a self-defense class.”
David’s eyes widened as Michelle’s expression turned soft.
“I didn’t think I would be using it so soon. Will I get it back?”
“Yes,” Riley said. “After they’ve pulled everything they need.”
She nodded, but she looked like she wanted to say more.
“What is it?”
Her eyes flickered up towards Riley.
“Those people… weren’t human were they?”
Sarah and Amy gasped.
“What makes you ask that?”
“Well…. Their eyes…” She flushed. “I mean, sometimes when Peter is happy, his eyes... they glow gold. I thought I was imagining things at first, but it happened more than once, and after seeing those guys, I’m definitely sure.”
David sighed. “Riley, if need be I offer them sanctuary, and I will deal with negotiations with Black Moon.”
She grinned. “Thanks for making my life easier.”
