52. Not human
Lucy
Matt’s eyes darted between my head and then up to Yvonne’s face. He growled.
“How dare you do this to her hair!” Matt growled and stepped toward me. “It’s so short. We’ve been working so hard to get it to grow out. You—”
He reached out to me. I pulled away. My heart was racing as I started to speak.
“I asked her to cut it.”
He shook his head. “No, you’re just saying that. You want long hair. It makes me happy. Don’t you want to make your mate happy?”
I clenched my jaw. “I hate having long hair.”
He flinched, stumbling back. My jaw trembled. Fear tumbled through me as he kept shaking his head. I forced myself to just keep breathing. I could do this. I could say something.
“What are you saying? You… You’re our mate. You’re supposed to make us happy.” His gaze darted to my ears. “Where are your earrings?”
“My ears have to heal,” I said. “And… And I didn’t—”
“They did heal,” he said. “You’re a werewolf. Sure, you’re a half-breed, but it wasn’t that big of a wound. She’s just doing this to spite us! Can’t you see that she’s just trying to fill your head with unimportant things?”
“I-It is important---”
“You’re not human—”
I turned from him. “Why ask me if you’re not going to listen?”
“You’re the one not listening to me!” Matt said. “You’re our mate. You should listen to us, not some half-breed doctor. What does she know about werewolves? What you need? About mates? Nothing! We’re the ones who you should be listening to. You should be obeying us.”
My stomach lurched, and for a moment, I saw the inside of that house. The small room I lived in. My adoptive father stood over me with a raised hand.
Obey me, you little bitch!
I shuddered, trying to push through the memory before I looked at him.
“O-Obey?”
“Yes,” his voice softened. “All lunas obey their alphas. Don’t you want to make us happy? You’ll be so much happier if we’re happy too.”
I stared at him. Frozen.
Your only worth is to make us money. I heard my adoptive father at the back of my mind.
A child can only be happy when their parents are happy. Work harder! My adoptive mother screamed from somewhere in my memories.
“I… don’t know you.”
He blinked. “What?”
“I don’t know you.”
“Of course you do,” he said. “I’m one of your mates.”
I pulled away from him. “I don’t know you.”
“What did you do to her?” Matt hissed. “Why is she talking like this?”
“Shut up for a second and listen to what she’s saying.”
He growled. “You’ve done something to her!”
I shook my head. My hands shook.
“You don’t know me.”
His head snapped to look at me. “I know everything I need to know about you. You’re our mate.”
“Says who?” I asked.
“The Moon Goddess!” He took my hand. “And if you would just listen to me, to us, you’d feel that. You’d understand. Every time we have sex, we get closer, don’t you feel that?”
My stomach churned. I thought of the sticky heat and pleasure that I never asked for. I thought of survival, and I could hear Matt moaning in my ear. I felt cold. The words were stuck in my throat. Fear made me silent, but I pulled away.
“Lucy,” Matt said, reaching for me. “Stop. Just come here.”
He cursed. “I knew I shouldn’t have let her keep you in her office overnight. You should have been sleeping with me. That’s why you’re so out of sorts.”
“I don’t want to,” I gasped out.
“What?”
“I don’t… want to sleep with you,” I said. “I don’t want doors between our rooms.”
My heart was pounding in my chest so hard it hurt. Other than Tina, I had never really admitted it, but the more I thought about it, the more I thought about everything that had happened since they’d bought me, the more I shook.
Matt scoffed. “You’re just saying that. It’ll be so much easier when you’re pregnant. You’re not going to want to walk out of your room. We’re doing this so we can watch over you.”
I felt sick again. My heart was racing. I looked at Yvonne, who stepped in between us.
“That’s enough, Matt.”
“Get out of my way,” he snarled. “You’re trying to get between us. Don’t you know what happens to people who try to get between a werewolf and their mate? A Blue Moon wolf and what he wants? Move.”
“I’m not going to move,” Yvonne said. “You’re being childish, and you’re stressing her out if you get your head out of your ass and open your eyes.”
“You’re not going to fool me, you half-breed witch. Get away from our mate!” His eyes started to glow. My heart lurched in my chest.
It was the sound of his voice that struck me. It was a low, mean growl and too familiar. I was frozen. My blood went cold. All I heard was burning fire and screaming. Glowing red eyes turned to look at me from within dark shadows. Fear pulsed in my veins. Then, I was turning, running. I didn’t know where I was going. It didn’t matter. I just had to keep running away from the vicious red eyes.
Run, little one! Someone, a woman, screamed from behind me. Her voice echoed through my mind. Run and forget!
I couldn’t breathe. The world shimmered and shifted. I didn’t know what to do. Yvonne went in and out of focus. I heard Matt roaring and yelling. My heart wouldn’t slow down. I couldn’t breathe.
I felt warm hands cupping my face, then Yvonne’s eyes came into focus, staring at me with just the faintest glow of light.
“Easy,” she said softly. “I need you to breathe. You have to breathe, or you’ll pass out, you understand? Nod if you understand.”
“Alpha Matt, you have to calm down!” I heard their beta say. I couldn’t see him, but I heard Matt snarling.
“I’ll kill her!”
Kill her! Someone roared. The sound echoed in the air. I felt the heat of fire nearby. My heart was racing as I slipped in a patch of something.
“I’ll kill her! Let me go!”
Let me go! Run! Run!
A deep, dark voice cackled. I saw a woman’s eyes lose their light. Then the howling of wolves up to the sky. I lifted my hands to see, and they were covered in sticky, thick blood. I could smell it. A scream started to build in my chest. I could barely breathe around it.
Kill them! Kill them all!
I screamed, turning away from Yvonne and running. I didn’t know where I was going. It didn’t matter. I didn’t care. I just had to get away. Shapes and shadows wavered in front of me. I couldn’t breathe. Everything was so fuzzy and dangerous, looming over me like monsters from a nightmare.
I reached the bottom of a burning set of stairs. I heard screaming. Someone grabbed my arm.
“Calm down!”
Let me go!
“Let me go!” I screamed, twisting and pulling. “Let me go!”
I can’t die here.
“I can’t die here.”
I won’t die here!
“Let go!” I screamed, shoving the hands off. I heard someone cry out. I heard glass break, but I ran, and I kept running through the scent of smoke and burning wood. Blood splashed and splattered everywhere. I couldn’t breathe, but my legs wouldn’t move fast enough.
I was so small. The hallway, the path, everything was so big.
Where was I?
How did I get out?
Why was there no one to protect me?
This way! Someone said, grabbing my hand and turning me. I ran after them. People screamed behind us. Don’t look back!
Where were they leading me? I didn’t know, and I didn’t care as the sounds of burning wood and fighting faded behind me.
