I settled at my desk, expecting a lot of information that wouldn’t be of any use to me, but for the first time since I had started to send them out to gather information, they came back with something interesting.
Alpha Oren was being released from prison within a month, and his sons were currently in SCF custody. It was almost hysterical. Better than that, it was an opportunity.
“No word about when they’ll be released?”
“None yet.”
I nodded. I already knew from other sources that Lucy was no longer at the Estate, but I would have to move carefully if I wanted to make the most of this. I’d need all the records I could manage on her situation, but if she was really being treated as a refugee, I could go to Blue Moon with my liaison and offer her sanctuary.
Matt and Tony would be furious, but they wouldn’t have any say in it. Blood Moon was more stable than Blue Moon in almost every way. We weren’t known for outright murder and bloodshed like Blue Moon, but given how Lucy had come into their custody, the Council would want her placed somewhere stable.
“It’s rare that I’m impressed with you,” I said. “Rare that you come back with anything of us… So what information did you have to trade to get this out of Peter?”
The three of them went pale. My lips lifted into a smile.
“Did you really think I didn’t know who your source of information was?” I cocked an eyebrow. “I’m young, not an idiot.”
I shook my head and called for my beta. “Get the answers out of them and anything else they might know.”
“Of course.” He and his assistants grabbed the three of them just as they started to stammer out pleas.
When the door closed, I picked up my phone and called our liaison, Trent. On the second ring, a calendar notification popped up about class registration, and I scoffed.
“Perfect timing,” I groused and opened the university’s website. I logged on and skimmed through the available classes. The sooner I was done with my degree, the sooner I could move forward with my plans for the werewolf community.
“You’re in a mood already?” Trent asked. As usual, he sounded like he was moments away from bursting into laughter. “Classes haven’t even started yet!”
“Registration is always a pain,” I said. “What have you found on the Blue Moon situation?”
“Well, it’s not looking good for Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum,” he scoffed. “Though I guess it never does when you insist on not using your brain. They’ll be in custody for about a week for several violations of our laws. Apparently, they bought her from an unsanctioned auction.”
“How… did she even end up…” I clenched my fists. “Never mind. It doesn’t matter.”
“Doesn’t it?” Trent asked.
“If I know them well enough, they’ve already picked the culprits that sold her up off the streets,” I said. “They may even be dead. If not, they’ve likely at least started to close in on them. It would be better to focus on what else can be done to take advantage of all the chaos. Have you contacted Liberation Front?”
“Of course,” he chuckled. “Making Blue Moon wolves uncomfortable has been my hobby since long before you were alpha… They’re working on the human case right now. Dagon was the one who started the report, so they’re in for a shit ton of trouble.”
“They’re liaison?”
He laughed. “They were dumb enough to attack their SC-appointed healer… Bluescale’s sister.”
I smiled. “I hope they take them for everything they can.”
“Well, if they don’t, the Hargraves will,” he said. “Apparently, there’s also a pending suit. Word has it that they attacked the princess and her beloved driver.”
I snorted. “It’s like they wanted to make it easy. The Hargraves are going to tear them to pieces, and the Bluescales are going to burn the remains to ash. It’s almost too easy… So what are the Council doing about it?”
“There’s some stalling on the Council. They want to make exceptions because of Blue Moon history.”
“A slap on the wrist, hm?” I asked. “Not surprising. They don’t want to start another war if they don’t have to quite yet.”
But it was coming, one way or another. The Council didn’t want the werewolf packs to reunite because of what happened the last time, but there was no other path forward for us. Not as long as I had a say about it.
“How strong of a case would I have to offer Lucy sanctuary?”
Trent laughed. “Well, stronger than Black Moon, for sure.”
I narrowed my eyes. “That’s something to be concerned about?”
“Peter is looking to control you both. They made their weakness obvious, and by now, someone has at least whispered in his ear that she may be a weakness of yours too, so, of course, it is,” he paused. “Though I wouldn’t worry about Peter or the twins for now.”
“Why?”
“She’s been made an internal secret, but from what I’ve been able to get from word around the office, she’s being protected by a coven.”
I sat back. “No way to find out which one?”
“Not yet,” he said. “Give me a bit more time. The Black Elm Coven would seem to be the most likely, given Dagon’s connection to it, but that would be too obvious.”
“Agreed. He’s too smart for that,” I blew out. “It’s fine. As long as she’s no longer within Blue Moon territory… it won’t be too hard to find her by human means.”
“You have an idea?”
“Witches are more human than any supernatural creature. They’ve also always had a soft spot for vulnerable women. Whatever coven she’s with, she’s going to be set-up to resume her human life in much better standing that she left it…”
I licked my lips. “Put out feelers about her registering for schools, get in contact with your police contacts and search for an address. She might be coming in for a new ID or a change of address…”
I looked over at the map of the supernatural territories in the States.
“Expand it to overseas and see what you can find out about the circumstances around her disappearance.”
“She disappeared at a human event,” he said. “I’ll send you the details. Anything else you can give me?”
I looked down at the beaded charm I kept on my desk. Lucy made it for me just a few days before my father found me and took me with him. It was my only source of comfort for a long time. I had kept up hope that I would see her again even when my father pushed me to the edge of sanity and I wanted to escape.
I smiled, grateful that my thoughts of Lucy had given me the strength to persevere, especially now that all the power I have can be used to protect her.
“Her full name is Lucy Graves,” I said. “Her birthday is April 15th.”
I rattled off everything else I could remember about her, then ended the call with a sigh.
I picked up the charm and took a deep breath.
“I’ll find you, Lucy,” I whispered. “And I won’t let anything else happen to you.”
