Lucy
I slumped into the seat of David's car, my legs feeling heavy and my mind buzzing with thoughts of the day. We had just finished our last class for the day, and I was relieved to be done finally. I had been running around campus all day, trying to keep up with my classes and not run into any hunters alone.
But as I sat in the car, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement building inside of me. I had been looking forward to this moment all day.
"Ready?" He asked, grinning at me and buckling his seatbelt.
"Ready," I said.
I glance at David, his eyes sparkling with excitement. "Where are we going?" I ask, my curiosity piqued.
He just smiled and squeezed my hand tighter.
"It's a surprise," he said, his voice low and husky. He twined his hand with mine, and I settled into my seat, enjoying the warmth of his hand in mine.
He drove for a while, and the scenery changed from the familiar campus to a more rural area. The air was cool and crisp, and the leaves on the trees were just starting to turn. David pulled the car over onto the side of the road, and I looked around, trying to figure out where we were.
"We're here," David said, his voice filled with excitement. He got out of the car and came around to open my door for me. I stepped out, feeling a little nervous but mostly excited.
He pulled a basket out from the trunk, took my hand, and led me into the woods.
I couldn't believe my eyes as we walked through the brush to the most enchanting sight I'd ever seen. The meadow was bathed in a soft, ethereal glow from the fireflies that danced around us, and tiny fairies flitted about, their delicate wings shimmering in the moonlight. It was like something out of a fairy tale. Nearby, there was a small pond; its surface rippled gently in the breeze.
"Welcome to our date," David said, his eyes shining. "I wanted to take you somewhere peaceful and quiet, where we could just be together and safe."
I looked around, taking in the beauty of the scene. It was breathtaking, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of calm wash over me.
"This is beautiful," I said, my voice soft. "Thank you for bringing me here."
David smiled. We walked in silence for a few moments, and the only sounds were the rustling of the grass beneath our feet and the soft hum of the fireflies. Finally, we reached the edge of the pond. We sat down, and he pulled out a small picnic basket from behind the bench. He set it down between us and started to unpack it.
There was a blanket inside, along with a few sandwiches, some fruit, and a bottle of wine.
"Don't be fooled by the label," David said. "It's just juice."
David poured us both a glass and raised his in a toast.
"To us," he said, his eyes meeting mine. I clinked my glass against his and took a sip. It was full of fruit and lovely.
As we started to eat, I hummed.
"This is really good."
"I'll let Blue know you like the sauce."
"How are your classes going?" I asked. "What are you taking, anyway? Aside from combat?"
"I'm taking a class on magical creatures right now," he said, his voice filled with enthusiasm. "It's fascinating. Did you know that there are over a hundred different types of fairies alone?"
I shook my head, amazed. "No, I had no idea. What does that mean for there to be types of fairies?"
He thought for a moment, his eyes far away as he contemplated the question. "It's a bit like being different types of shifters. We would classify gnomes, goblins, sprites, brownies, and so many others as fairies because of the quality of their magic."
"It strikes me sometimes that in someways… You're new to all of this, too."
He smiled. "You'll stop feeling bad about not knowing everything?"
I ducked my head. "I'll try to remember that you also have a lot to learn."
"Me too," David said. "It feels like my part in the Festival gets bigger every year." His voice turned serious. "It's one of the most important traditions for supernaturals."
"And the Awakening?"
"That too."
"What is the Awakening?" I bit my lip. "And what do you have to do?"
"Well, the second part is a secret," he said, a mischievous grin spreading across his face. "But I can tell you that it involves a lot of preparation and practice. The Awakening is when all the energies of the world are most alive. They say it's when the veil between our world and the worlds beyond are the thinnest too."
He lay back with a deep sigh. "I'm still working out the kinks on what I'm supposed to be doing. And, of course, there's the Ball at the beginning of the Festival, which is always a highlight."
I felt a flutter of excitement in my chest at the thought of the Ball.
"My favorite is still the festival itself." He grinned. "It's a special year, so who knows what's going to happen?"
"Do people really wear costumes?" I asked, my imagination running wild.
"Yes, actually," he said, his grin widening. "It's one of the most exciting parts of the Festival. The costumes are always so elaborate and beautiful. We'll still be in clothing from the Ball, but I've always liked seeing the costumes."
We talked about everything, and nothing it felt like before the night turned quiet, and we leaned together, wrapped in the planet and gazing up at the stars. I felt a bit drowsy. The excitement of the day was getting to me.
"I should get you home."
"No," I pleaded, clinging to him. "Not yet…. Please?"
He chuckled and pulled me closer. "We'll have plenty more nights like this one, you know?"
"I don't think I'll ever want them to end."
"Me either."
David pulled me close, his warm body pressed against mine. I couldn't help but feel a sense of peace and contentment wash over me. The full moon cast a soft, silver glow over us, illuminating the grass beneath our feet and the stars above our heads. It was a magical moment, one that I knew I would never forget.
I leaned my head against his chest, listening to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat.
"David," I whispered, my voice barely above a whisper. "I had a dream about us."
He lifted his head, his eyes meeting mine in the moonlight.
"Really?" he asked, a hint of excitement in his voice. "What was it about?"
I took a deep breath, gathering my thoughts. "In the dream, we were in a castle. Except, it wasn't exactly us… We were in a cottage near where White Moon was, growing older together. We were dancing together, eating… living. And I felt so happy, so alive. It was like everything made sense like I finally found my place in the world."
David smiled, his eyes filled with understanding. "That sounds like a beautiful dream, Lucy," he said, his voice filled with warmth. "I'm glad you had it…"
I looked up at him, my heart swelling with affection. "I'm glad I have you, David," I said, my voice filled with sincerity. "You make everything better, you know that?"
He leaned down and brushed a strand of hair from my face, his fingers gentle and tender. "I'm glad I make you happy, Lucy," he said, his voice filled with love. "You're the most important person in my life, and I'd do anything to make you happy."
I felt a surge of emotion welling up inside me. "I… I really hope that it's… a future."
He smiled, his eyes glowing in the night. "Me too."
He drew closer. I leaned into it until our lips met softly and tenderly. My heart felt so full I could barely breathe. It was a moment of pure magic, a moment that I would cherish for the rest of my life. I knew that this was just the beginning of something I wanted to last forever. He nipped at my lip.
"Lucy," he whispered, his voice heavy with emotion.
My eyes burned with tears. "Me too."
He kissed me again.
As we pulled apart, our eyes locked. He smiled, bumping our noses together.
"A little longer, then we're heading back."
"Could I… stay over?"
"Whatever you want."
As we cuddled together under the light of the full moon, I felt a sense of peace and contentment that I had never experienced before. It was like everything had fallen into place like the pieces of a puzzle had finally come together.
This had to be what everyone loved about relationships.
He hummed a song I didn't totally recognize, but I felt it thrumming through me as if my soul knew it.
As if my soul knew David.
