Matt
I turned, searching the crowd for Lucy. She wasn’t where she had been most of the afternoon, in a little shaded corner, probably feeling out of place. She wasn’t at the buffet either.
When was the last time you saw Lucy?
I thought you were watching her, Tony said. I was keeping an eye on Tina.
I frowned. She’s not where she was a second ago…
I focused on my hearing, listening for her. Then, I heard her voice.
“Excuse me? Could you point me to a bathroom?”
She’s going to the bathroom. Do you still have eyes on Tina?
I haven’t let her out of my sight, he said stiffly. I honestly don’t know how much more I can take this, Matt. I’m pretty sure I was about to lose it in the car.
How much longer do we have to be here?
Not long. Head that way so we can go.
I smiled and excused myself, saying something about checking on our companion. I headed inside and asked for the bathroom. Based on the way she sounded, I was headed down the same hallway. A woman went past, and I took a seat at the end of the hallway where all the bathrooms were. I waited for Lucy to come out and tried to think about what I would say to her.
It was such bullshit that we couldn’t get rid of the doctor and her stupid brother. The Council couldn’t think that the two of them corrupting Lucy against us was a good thing. Couldn’t they just bring someone else in to be our liaison and doctor, preferably another werewolf?
The doors opened and closed, but Lucy didn’t come out. I smelled her perfume, but I didn’t see her.
Maybe she had already left, and I missed her? I left the hallway, following my nose. It drifted back to the party and down the hallway away from it. I stopped one of the staff members.
“Have you seen a woman in pants with short hair recently?”
She frowned and shook her head before carrying on.
Then, my gut started churning. I smelled Lucy’s perfume still, but it was as if it was coming from multiple directions. I frowned and focused. It was hard to focus my senses with all these humans drenched in perfume and cologne.
Did you find her?
Not yet… she wasn’t in the bathrooms. I’m headed down the hallway.
I followed her scent through the house, but I couldn’t find her. The longer I seemed to be walking in circles, the longer I was certain that something was wrong.
Matt! Head out the front door. I’ll be right behind you!
My heart lurched, and I rushed back the way I came. Her scent was getting closer. I got out the door and followed the scent towards the cars. There was a silver sedan pulling out of a parking spot. I could smell her scent coming from the car.
“Lucy!” I yelled. I felt Tony coming up behind me. My fury seemed to burst as the car sped up down the gravel pathway back toward the highway.
I can’t catch up to that on two legs.
We’ll go through the woods and circle around, Tony said. Remember the license plate.
GH98586.
I turned and ran towards the woods, taking Tony’s lead. We shifted in a flash and ran through the woods. I could feel his fury through our bond.
We’ll catch up to her, Tony, I said.
He didn’t reply. I could feel his irritation. The guilt churned in me. If I had just kept a better eye on her, we wouldn’t be in this position. We ran for what felt like too long, using our enhanced speed to cut through the wooded area around the mansion until we could catch up with them on the main road. The car was heading right into Blood Moon Territory.
My heart raced. She had to be so afraid, being kidnapped from the venue like that. Tony was silent as he led me through the trees, hurrying up the slopes toward the highway. The SCF was going to have a fit probably, but I didn’t care. I could tell that Tony didn’t care either.
I can hear the road up ahead, Tony said.
We’re never taking her from the Den again. I said. And we’re getting rid of that doctor at the first opportunity.
I followed him up the hillside as the car turned onto the highway. Tony broke through the trees and shifted into his human form. I followed just behind him, glaring at the driver in the car. The man went pale as he braked just hard enough to avoid hitting us.
I marched around the side to the passenger side as Tony yanked the driver’s door open.
“Get out! Where is Lucy?” He growled.
“Y—You… wolf?”
Tony roared, dragging him out of the car and dragging him onto the ground, tearing through the seatbelt as I tried to get the door open. I heard screaming inside, a woman. Lucy.
Tony growled, stalking the man across the road.
“D-Don’t hurt me! I’m just a driver!”
The woman shrieked as Tony punched through the window and snarled, his eyes bright red.
“Where is Lucy?” He roared.
Then, it started to sink in. The woman inside was holding a piece of crystal to her face, speaking quickly. She wasn’t Lucy. Where could she be?
“Where is she?” I asked. “I’m not going to ask again!”
“Who the fuck are you talking about, you fucking psycho?” She asked, aiming a glowing hand at me as a glimmering wall seemed to go up around her. “You make one fucking wrong move, and I’ll fucking blast you.”
“You’ve taken our mate, you witch,” I snarled. “Where is she?”
“I don’t even care who you’re talking about, mangy wolf.”
Tony growled and ripped the door off from the other side. In a flash, all I saw was light. Something shoved me in the chest. A bright hot pain shot through me as I flew back. I didn’t know where Tony was, but as I landed, I saw the car rock and shift. The woman got out of the car with glowing white eyes.
“Asshole,” she growled, panting. “You wait until the SCF hears about this shit! I’m taking you and your pack for everything I can.”
I struggled to get up. The pain was overwhelming, but I wasn’t bleeding. What the hell had she done to me? I struggled to my knees and tried to shift, but I couldn’t. My heart quickened. I tried again, but it felt like there was a block on me.
“What did you do to me, witch?”
She scoffed and walked around the car. She opened the trunk and pulled out a bag. She pulled something out of it.
I heard Tony’s voice calling for Lucy on the other side. She lit a pipe that smelled sickeningly sweet as she smoked. Then, she rounded the car. I dragged my body around, my heart thudding with fear as I lifted myself. I heard the heartbeat. I could smell the perfume I had sprayed on Lucy earlier that day, yet when I looked inside the trunk, there was nothing but a witch’s bag. Something glowed within it. Tony cried out in pain as she put her heeled foot on his chest and kicked.
“Not very fucking nice, is it?” She hissed. “You fucking wolves always using brute fucking strength. More animal than brains. How’s it feel to be little more than human?”
My stomach flipped as she kicked him over. “That’s for scaring my Harry.”
She took another puff of her pipe before walking away. Her heels clicked across the asphalt.
“Harry? Are you okay? Are you hurt?” She asked, her voice growing softer.
The scent, I said to Tony. S-She’s not there…
Tony looked ill, barely hanging on. His eyes didn’t glow, but they slowly closed as if he was passing out.
“Tony!”
I felt his mind go blank. Soon after, the darkness took me too.
