26. The twins’ old lovers

Peter
Poison.
It was the first thing that came to mind when I heard whoever Matt was speaking to talking about Lucy. It was truly the only thing that would make sense as any werewolf within the house would have heard a gunshot and smelled freshly spilled blood. Slow-acting perhaps, maybe not. Effective. Ruthless. And oddly personal. Whoever did it wanted Lucy to suffer until the last breath had left her. Maybe it was one the twins’ old lovers.
Perhaps it had been one of their old pack members who had joined Black Moon. My lips almost twitched into a smile as I ran my thumb over the smooth surface of Lucy’s hairpin in my pocket. I wasn’t worried, exactly. Poison, for the most part, tended to cause some discomfort, but unless they had used wolfsbane, it was unlikely to kill her, even if she was a half breed.
Whoever was behind this had been within the Blue Moon Pack. As I had not given the order, I supposed it was someone who was working for the Blood Moon Pack. Little David had more spies and traitors around him than he seemed to realize, even if he never seemed to share enough information with any of them to be of use to me.
Lucy wasn’t safe there. If she were in my pack, she would be safe as everyone in my pack knows I would kill them without a moment’s hesitation. That was the problem with Matt and Tony. They had distanced themselves so much from heir father that no one feared them.
Seeing Matt and Tony rushing to leave was more entertaining than I imagined it could be. At the least, it would get them out of the way for what I planned next.
I turned back to look over at the other alphas who had arrived. Most of them were subordinates of David. They were all as old as his father had been and probably a little upset that they had to listen to his son now that the old man was dead.
David turned, watching them go. He was tense and clenching his hands at his sides.
“Interesting that they would feel the need to leave so quickly,” I said. “It seems that the Blue Moon Pack isn’t as strong as it once was.”
There was a hum of approval around the room.
“Or maybe, their new luna is the cause of the trouble… the half breed.”
David turned stiffly and glared at me. I smirked at the soft red glow in his eyes.
“Her name is Lucy.”
My lips twitched. “Ah, yes. Lucy, the HalfB.”
I tilted my head. “Perhaps we should consider that Alpha Tony’s stance on war is because he can barely keep his own territory safe?”
David narrowed his eyes then smiled slowly. “You never answered… who started the skirmish and who would be paying reparations.”
I smiled thinly. “I suspect it is obvious to anyone who cares to think.”
I turned away and head into the room where the auction was being set up. “I’m sure we can still manage to enjoy ourselves with them. Perhaps even more so.”
There was a resounding cry of agreement that made me laugh. Everyone headed into the room ahead of me, shuffling to their seats. David followed me into the room. I walked past the tables and up to the podium as my subordinates got the first human ready.
Then, the auction began.
“The first is a human woman we took from her family rather than turning her,” I laughed. “I think you can agree that she has enough assets that she was better off kept alive…”
A cry of interest filled the air as the busty woman was dragged onto the stage. She was blindfolded and draped in a thin white gown. The scent of lust filled the air and I started the bidding higher than usual.

David
I watched the auction and the way the rest of the room reacted to the way Peter announced every offering. They were all women, most of them were human, but there were a few half breed women as well, like Lucy. None of them were to my interest, but I noticed something about the way the people reacted.
Peter was bribing them more or less. This was a taste of what they could expect if we followed Peter’s agenda. Endless new human women to have and discard as they wanted. The power of not having to hide in plain sight, to be treated like kings was what Peter was offering.
At least, it was what they thought he was offering.
If we didn’t grow our packs, werewolves would die out. If we didn’t unify, there was no chance of us growing our packs. I shook my head and left the auction before it was over. As I left the hall, I paused to look out the glass doors and wondered if Matt and Tony had rushed home because of something to do with Lucy.
I turned from the foyer, took the elevator upstairs, and returned to my room. Once inside, I stepped onto the balcony and called my beta.
“What have you found on Black Moon so far?”
I sank into the lounging chair trying to keep my mind off of Lucy. I kept my voice low to avoid all the microphones I knew were in the room.
“Much of the same. There was a territory dispute with the dragons. You can guess how that ended.”
“Peter’s making it seem like he won.”
“I’d call it a draw.” He said. “Mostly, the dragons ate four of his werewolves and he managed to injure them with some sort of weapon. From what I could find out, the dragons are demanding payment and Peter has made arrangements to give it.”
I narrowed my eyes. “Look into this weapon. I want to know everything I can. If he’s using it against dragons, he’s only a step away from using it on anyone else.”
“Of course. And that information you wanted on Lucy?”
I swallowed. “Give it to me.”
“We’ve picked up her adoptive parents and gotten copies of all the records we could manage. We’re still searching for anyone else who might have been at the orphanage… There’s one other thing.”
“Yes?”
“We’ve found a secure room in the Estate, one that’s not on the schematics. We’re not sure how big it is or what’s in it, but it’s got a shit ton of security on it.”
I narrowed my eyes. “Can you tell how old it is?”
“No, but we’re guessing it’s at least twenty years old.”
That would make it older than me, for sure, but something told me that it was much older than that.
“I’ll look at it when I get back. For now, just carry on with the research you’re doing into Black Moon and add in a look into Blue Moon’s finances. Tony and Matt seemed entirely too… calm while Peter was speaking about all the collapsed businesses.”
“I’m on it.”
I hung up and my thoughts immediately went to Lucy. I had half a mind to leave the hotel and follow them to figure out what was going on, but that would just cause more trouble. If they couldn’t protect Lucy inside their own territory, they didn’t deserve her and it would be one more reason to kill them brutally when the time came.
I went back inside to pour myself a drink from the mini bar and watch the sunset from my balcony. Next door, I heard someone coming back with a screaming, frightened woman. I went back inside, not wanting to hear whatever was happening.
