Lucy
Everyone else seemed excited, but I still didn’t know what that was.
“Is it… going to hurt?”
He shook his head. “It’s a place filled with games, fun, and prizes. What do you say?”
He looked over my head. “Lucy’s never been to an arcade.”
One of the girls squealed. “Then, we definitely have to go!”
He smiled and wiggled his eyebrows. “It’s not that far of a bus ride away… Or we could drive if you’re okay with that?”
I looked back at everyone else and nodded. “Let’s go, then.”
He punched the air as everyone clapped and we headed out. We walked through a barrier to a nearby bus station. Soon, we were on the bus, then transferring onto a train. Listening to everyone talk about their favorite games made me smile. It was hard not to smile with how excited they all looked. I thought back to when I heard about people going to high school and going out with their friends. This had to be what they were talking about.
When we got off the train, David took lead. The streets were full with people, but soon we reached a building that was lit with neon lights around the doors. Everything seemed to flash with bright colors, and I could see people inside running around and laughing.
“Well?” David said taking my hand. “Are we going?”
I nodded and hurried after him as we headed into the arcade. David paid for my ticket before I could say anything or even think about it. I was too distracted by everything happening around me to be worried about it. Games chimed and flashed. I heard people cheering nearby and laughing. It seemed like a place where only good things could happen.
“They’ve got VR here?” Someone asked.
“I’m game!”
“Swordfight!”
They rushed off, laughing like kids, but David didn’t leave my side. He nodded towards a game nearby.
“I’m a bit more old school. How about a basic video game?”
I nodded, following him to the console. He put in a token for us both and told me what all the buttons did. I lost the first game, but the thrill of trying to beat him had me laughing. We played four rounds before we were off to play Skee Ball. I didn’t fully understand how it was supposed to work, but David showed me and I won a round.
“You’re a natural already,” he said. “You’ll be queen of the arcade soon enough.”
“Can we play again?” I asked.
His eyes softened. “We can play as much as you want.”
We played every game in the line. I crashed my virtual motorcycle three times before I managed to finish the race. I was a terrible shot at the rocking shooter game, but being shaken around and sliding across the bench beside David was fun.
When we found everyone again, they were near something called Lazer Tag.
“Let’s do it!” I cheered, joining them even though I had no idea how to play.
“Don’t feel bad,” David said. “It was your first time playing.”
I couldn’t help but feel bad. “I made us lose.”
“You did not,” one of the women said. “David made us lose. Seriously, what sort of workout do you do? You went full on Army Ranger on us!”
His lips twitched. “I had an unfair advantage, I admit.”
We looked up at the team score boards, and while we, the blue team, lost, it wasn’t by as much as I thought it would be. We headed towards the bar where they were serving food. I smelled alcohol in the air and looked at David. He had lost a bit of color in his face, but he smiled at the barman and ordered for us both as everyone else started to find seats.
“Are you okay?” I asked.
He nodded. “I’ll be just fine.”
He took the ticket and led me to the table, carrying a tray full of drinks. He passed them around before settling beside me.
“Isn’t that here?”
I frowned as I heard the voice. I turned my head, searching for the voice, but I couldn’t find it.
“You okay?” David asked.
I nodded. “I just… thought I heard someone familiar.”
He went stiff and glanced around, scanning the area as he drank his soda. I tried not to think about it and pay attention to what everyone was talking about, but someone started to yell. They were too far away for me to hear them clearly, but David was stiff and staring in their direction.
Then, the shouting grew loud enough to hear.
“What the hell are you doing here?” A woman snarled. Her eyes flashed.
My heart started to race and David drew me closer.
“It’s okay,” he said. “Nothing is going to happen to you.”
"Me? Who do you think you are? You think you can just waltz back into Tony's life, huh?”
“Oh, please. You had your chance, and it didn’t work out. He dropped you—”
“He dumped you too!”
“I have more of a chance than you do!”
I sunk further into my seat hoping that neither of them recognized me as they started to growl at each other. David pulled out his phone and handed it to me.
“Tell them that there’s likely going to be a Code White Wolf and give them our location,” he said softly. “Stay down and don’t move.”
I nodded as he slipped out of the seat.
One of the women shrieked. The other woman pointed a finger at her. Then, she lashed out, swinging at the other one’s face, but she dodge the attack and shoved the woman back. The crowd gasped around them as they lunged at each other. They stumbled and shrieked as they tumbled and bumped into the games nearby. One of them went sliding across a table and knocked over all the drinks. Glass shattered.
Then, she jumped up as someone picked up the line on the phone.
“SCF Emergency Hotline?”
“There’s like to be a Code White Wolf at Mayhem Arcade in Hecate City?”
“Please hold your position and stay out of danger.”
With a low growl, the other one lunged forward. Her fingers turned into claws and slashed through the woman’s top. The other woman darted back before pulling out her own claws that left a red gash across the woman’s face.
"You don't deserve him," one of them screamed as fur rippled under their skin. "You'll never understand what we had. You were nothing but a cheap lay!"
I looked around the room where people were watching on. They couldn’t all be supernatural. Wasn’t this against the rules?
“I’ll kill you!” She grabbed the woman around her throat and slammed her into the bar. The other woman shoved her back and sent her flying over a table.
The other woman scoffed. "You weren’t ever enough for him. He told me how terrible you were in bed! Tony deserves someone who can please him.”
“Bitch!”
Their movements were blurs as they shrieked and clawed at each other. Games were smashed. Sparks flew around them. One of them shrieked as their hair caught on fire. She dropped to the ground and the other girl got on top of her and started punching her in the face.
“He’s mine! I’ll kill you and that other bitch!”
David came back with the arcade staff, who tried to separate the two of them, but they just shoved them back and continued fighting. The woman on her back took the chance to kick the other woman off and grabbed a bottle. She crashed it over the woman’s head. Then, David pried them apart and held them apart, growling at them, something low and threatening. They both went quiet and still. I stared in shock.
The arcade staff moved around, waving people away, and faint light drifted through the air as they did. It was magic.
The two women panted, staring at each other and glaring at each other before they both tried to turn away. David kept a hold of them and put them in seats across the table from each other before he started to talk. I couldn’t hear what he was saying, but it looked like they were being scolded.
Everyone else at the arcade returned to playing their games. They both seemed to try to argue with David, but he slammed his hands on the table and said something that had them shutting their mouths. They crossed their arms and sat back without another word.
He turned to the arcade staff and shook hands with one of them. Soon, a group of people in what looked like police clothing came in and escorted the women away. David spoke with one of them for a while before coming back. He scanned me before sitting beside me.
“Are you alright?”
I nodded. “I… Is everything okay?”
David nodded. “It should be fine. I’m sure Peter and the Hecate Coven will fine everyone involved appropriately.”
I frowned. “Peter?”
