51. Idiots
Lucy
I woke up in Yvonne’s office. For the first time since I’d woken up from being sick, I was alone. I stretched out on the bench with a deep sigh of contentment and sat up. It was probably the best sleep I’d had in a long time.
“Morning,” Yvonne greeted, coming down the hall. She was dressed in a robe and brushing her hair. “I usually don’t pry, but your hair….”
I grimaced, eyeing the long curly hair over her shoulder.
“Do you maybe want some help with it? Maybe a haircut?”
I sat up straighter, filled with hope. “You’d… You’d really cut my hair for me?”
Yvonne chuckled. “If that’s what you want.”
I worried my lip, wondering what Matt and Tony would say, but then I thought about last night. Matt had pushed and pushed even though I said I didn’t want to. There was no way I could get any clearer than that.
“You’re looking a little too serious for a haircut.”
“They… like it long.”
“Are they taking care of it? Lugging it around? Styling it?” Yvonne rolled her eyes.
“No.”
“Then, it’s not their business. It’s on their hair. If they want long hair, tell them to grow their own.”
I pictured it and couldn’t but laugh at the thought of Tony with long hair or Matt.
“Thanks… for helping me.”
She shrugged. “All shifters talk about loyalty, but they only care about who they want to care about. If no one else cares about your opinion, at the least, you should care about yours.”
I nodded. It was strange hearing this for the first time in my whole life that I had the right to choose… Even if my hair length felt like something small, it felt huge.
I slipped off the bench with a smile. “Please? It’s really annoying.”
She chuckled. “I completely understand. Come on.”
“Why do you keep your hair long?” I asked.
She shrugged. “I like it long, and I’ve had enough time to learn what and how to deal with it, so it’s not so bad.”
I sat at her vanity as she found a brush.
“Honestly, I have a ridiculous number of cowlicks when it’s short, so I grew it out.” She shrugged again. “And if you suddenly change your mind and want longer hair, there are options for that. It’s hair. It’ll grow back.”
“Could you make it… not grow any longer?”
Her lips twitched. “There are ways to do that. Is that something you want?”
I worried my lip. “I’ll think about it.”
I turned to the mirror, and the glint of the earring in my ears caught my eyes.
“About my ears…”
She combed through my hair, and for a little while, it felt like what I imagined having an older sister would be like. She cut it into a style instead of just the shortness I had before. Then, she helped with my ears. She tutted.
“Idiots,” she said, holding one of my ears with a pair of wrapped forceps and dabbing something on them. “Just because werewolves would heal within a few days doesn’t mean you should go around getting piercing at random jewelry stores. Luxury or not.”
“They gave me stuff for them, but…” I hissed as it started to burn. She waved cool air on it. “I guess it didn’t work.”
“You have a werewolf’s problems without a complete werewolf immune system. Human products don’t work for you… Have you ever tried taking aspirin?”
I frowned and nodded. “It… didn’t work very well.”
“You got a stomach ache, I bet.”
I nodded. “It lasted for a couple of days. I never took it again.”
“Human medicine doesn’t work on shifters,” she said. “It means you can’t catch human diseases, but it also means that you need supernatural vaccines.”
She sighed again. “If I had known the truth, I would have started you on them ages ago. Luckily, you haven’t been anywhere with a bunch of other supernatural people, so a bit of nausea was all you’ve suffered so far.”
I blinked at her. “You mean… before? It was just a stomach bug or something?”
“Probably from the kids,” she said and went to my other ear. “Do you want to keep the piercings?”
I looked down. “I… don’t really know.”
She nodded. “Tell you what. If you decide you don’t want them sometime down the line, take your earrings out and leave them out for at least a month. The holes should start to close up then.”
I nodded. “Okay.”
She treated my other ear, cleaning the earring in a glowing solution before putting something else in my ears. She put the cleaned earrings in a little cloth pouch and handed them to me.
“Let’s get you upstairs into a proper bath, okay?” I nodded and walked with her out of the room toward the staircase. My stomach churned, expecting Matt to show up again, but he didn’t show up at all. I was so relieved I didn’t know what to do. I reached the doors of the luna suite and leaned into it. There were men inside working. Drop cloths were everywhere. The wall that had been closed was open again and looked like they had made it bigger. There was another opening that I could see on the other side where Matt’s room was. The wall was partially missing there too.
“Oh, god,” Yvonne groaned. Their beta turned around and nodded his head.
“Luna,” he greeted. “I hope you’re doing well.”
“What going on?” I asked.
“Alpha Tony has asked us to put in doors between your room and theirs.”
My jaw trembled. My gut clenched again with fear, and I closed my eyes.
“So you’re just going to remove what little other privacy she has?” Yvonne asked. I looked up at her, surprised that she said something.
She tilted her head. “Without even asking if she would want them to have so much access to her?”
“I’m only following the alpha’s orders,” he said. “It’ll be good for you. You’re mates, after all.”
I clenched my fists. The more I heard that word, the more I heard people trying to force it on me, the more resistant I felt.
“What mate wouldn’t---”
“I don’t want doors between our rooms,” I forced out. I glanced at Yvonne, who smiled at me.
He blinked and looked uncomfortable. “Well, I can’t go against his orders.”
I met his gaze. “Will they lock?”
He blinked and looked nervous. “Well… I’m sure I can make that happen if you want, luna. But are you sure? If you put in locks…”
I lifted my head and nodded. “I want locks… Locks they can’t break. I-If you’re going to put in doors, then they should be just as strong as the main door.”
The beta grimaced and looked at the door. “Well…”
Yvonne grinned, and she chuckled. “You heard the woman. I don’t suppose your alpha said they should be more like doorways, did he?”
“Well, no, but…” He grimaced and rubbed his head. “I’ll see what I can do, luna.”
“T-Thank you,” I said and turned away from the sight of them working and closed the door behind me. My stomach kept jumping with nerves, but it was okay. I’d said something. He’d at least try. If he didn’t, that was only because Tony or Matt had said something. I shuddered. I had to get out of here sooner rather than later. I looked at Yvonne.
“Could I… hang out with you?”
She nodded. “I’ll never say no to some company.”
“Lucy?” I turned around to see Matt standing at the end of the hallway. His voice was distraught as he stared at me. His eyes were focused on my head. “What happened to your hair?”
