Chapter 58 - The Twins

Kaleigh had been getting bigger and bigger by the day. She was only two weeks away from her due date and did more waddling than walking. She was waddling her way to the dining hall to meet Dominick for lunch.

She was almost there when a feeling of doom washed over her. Kaleigh felt a sharp pain in her abdomen and fell to her knees. No one was around, so she mindlinked Dominick.

"Dominick, I'm in the hallway right outside the dining hall. Come quick, I think something is wrong with the twins." Kaleigh didn't get a response, but she heard him running to her before she got the last word out.

"Kaleigh, what's wrong?" Dominick ran to her side and lifted her in his arms.

"I don't know. Take me to the pack hospital right away. I feel like something is wrong with the twins." Dominick didn't waste any time. He began running out of the packhouse toward the pack hospital.

Dominick was too scared to speak. He was worried about Kaleigh and his daughters. He mindlinked his parents, asking them to meet them at the pack hospital immediately. They said they were on their way. Dominick looked down at Kaleigh and saw her silent tears. Those scared him more than anything else in the world. He quickened his pace the rest of the way.

When they arrived at the pack hospital, it wasn't busy. Dominick went up to the empty desk and yelled for someone to help them. Three people came running from the back.

"What's wrong, Dominick? Did something happen to Kaleigh?" One of the nurses came over and looked down at the young woman in his arms. Kaleigh looked up at her, crying.

"Belinda, I think there is something wrong with the twins. Something doesn't feel right, and I have sharp pain in my abdomen." Kaleigh clutched her stomach as another pain hit. Dominick flinched as well, feeling her pain.

"Dominick, take her straight back to room one. I will call Dr. Galt." Dominick did as he was told and gently laid Kaleigh on the hospital bed. He heard his parents outside demanding to know where Dominick and Kaleigh were.

"We're in room one." Dominick yelled to his parents. They were in the small room within seconds.

"Son, what's wrong?" Alpha Dillon didn't like the way Kaleigh looked lying on the bed. She was more pale than usual and crying, holding her stomach.

"Kaleigh said she thinks something is wrong with the twins. She is having a lot of pain. Where is the damn doctor?" Dominick was ready to start tearing things up if the doctor didn't get there soon. Just as he was about to shift into Ash and look for him, Dr. Galt came running into the room.

"I need everyone out of here except Dominick, so I can examine Kaleigh." Dr. Galt didn't waste any time as he pulled up a stool. He had Dominick and the nurse help take Kaleigh's pants off so he could see what was going on.

While he examined Kaleigh, the nurse hooked Kaleigh up to different monitors to check both her and the babies. Dominick didn't understand the monitors, so he watched the doctor while holding Kaleigh's hand.

Kaleigh was speechless from fear. She couldn't feel her babies moving or anything, which terrified her. Skylar couldn't help either because she didn't know what was wrong. Skylar couldn't feel the babies either.

Dr. Galt suddenly stood up and pressed an alarm on the wall. He then looked at the nurse.

"We need to get her into the OR right now. She has placental abruption. If we don't get the babies out now, we may lose them and their mother." Kaleigh started crying again, looking at Dominick in pure terror.

Dominick looked back at Kaleigh, and he started crying. He and Ash felt completely helpless, unable to do anything for their mate or daughters. Dominick squeezed Kaleigh's hand while they prepped everything to take her to the OR. Dominick leaned down and kissed her gently before they whisked her away.

Dominick fell to his knees, crying. Ash howled in his head as they felt their mate's pain and grief. Dominick heard his parents come in behind him. His dad helped him up and took him into the hall to sit in a chair. Dominick was in shock.

Alannah was softly crying, and even Alpha Dillon had tears streaming down his face. They couldn't lose Kaleigh or the twins. They all sat together, praying to the Moon Goddess that everything would be okay.

Word had spread about Kaleigh's situation, and the waiting room was packed with concerned pack members before long. Felicia found her parents and Dominick. She ran up to them and threw her arms around her brother. Felicia had never seen him cry, so she knew whatever was going on was really bad.

Dominick couldn't move or do anything other than cry. He knew they had Kaleigh in surgery because he could no longer feel her like how it was when she was sleeping. Dominick had never been so scared in his entire life. Every minute he had spent with Kaleigh flashed before his eyes like a movie.

Dominick dropped his head into his hands as he sobbed. He couldn't lose his mate and his daughters. It wasn't possible. They hadn't been together for more than a few months. Dominick thought of everything they still needed to do together. Just as he was about to completely break down, the doctor came in. Dominick jumped to his feet and ran the few steps to him.

"How are they?" Dominick choked out through his tears. Dr. Galt smiled at him.

"Mother and daughters are doing fine. Kaleigh had a placental abruption which means that her placenta separated from the uterus wall. This can cause the babies to not get any oxygen and have long-term effects. If you had not brought them here when you did, your daughters may have had some of these issues, but they appear to be healthy. Dominick, I can take you back now. Kaleigh is still under anesthesia, but she should be coming out of it in a few minutes." Dominick couldn't speak as he followed the doctor.

He heard the howls of relief going through the pack at the news that Kaleigh and the pups were okay. That is when it hit Dominic, he was now a father. He had not one but two daughters. He now experienced a whole new fear. He didn't have the slightest idea what to do with a pup.

Dominick followed Dr. Galt silently. He was led to an observation window where he saw two nurses caring for two pups. It took him a minute to realize those were his pups. Dominick felt happy tears running down his face now. After the nurses had them swaddled in blankets, they laid them in bassinets.

"Dominick, do you want to go in and meet your daughters?" Dominick stared at the two tiny little pups through the window, his daughters.

"Yes, can I hold them?" Dr. Galt laughed and slapped him on the back.

"Of course, you can. They're your pups." Dr. Galt led Dominick through a door and into the nursery.

Dominick walked over to the two bassinets and looked at the little pups staring up at him. He felt his heart melt at their little faces. They looked like both him and their mother. They both had her hair, their skin was slightly tan, and their eyes were dark, but he remembered Kaleigh saying babies' eye color can change as they get older.

Dominick leaned down and carefully picked up one of the little pups in his arms. She felt so tiny, like she didn't weigh anything at all. He touched her tiny little hand with his finger, and she grabbed his finger. That was when Dominick knew he was in trouble. These little ones already had him wrapped around their fingers.

He kissed her forehead and then laid her back in the bassinet. Dominick turned to the other pup and picked her up. He also let her take his finger in her little hand. Dominick had never felt happier than he did at that moment. He needed one thing more to make it complete. He had to see Kaleigh.

After laying his other daughter in her bassinet, he went back out of the nursery to see Dr. Galt. He found him leading his parents and Felicia to the nursery.

"Dominick, how are the pups?" Alphas Dillon asked.

"They are perfect, dad. They are so small I'm scared I'll hurt them. Dr. Galt, I need to see my mate. Where is she?" Dominick had to know that Kaleigh was alright.

"Dominick." He heard his name and swung around. There was Kaleigh in a hospital gown being pushed in a wheelchair. He took a sigh of relief before running over to her and dropping to his knees in front of the wheelchair. He gently wrapped his arms around her, and he cried again.

"Kaleigh, I was so worried I would lose you and the girls." Kaleigh was thankful for her wolf healing. Dominick was trying to be gentle, but it would have been painful if she wasn't already healing rapidly.

"I told you, Dominick, that we have a long life together." Kaleigh wiped Dominick's tears from his face and pulled him to her for a soft kiss.

"I love you, Kaleigh."

"I love you too, Dominick. Now take me to our daughters so I can meet them. I guess we can now tell everyone their names too." Kaleigh smiled at Dominick as he stood up and took the nurse's place to push her.

"Kaleigh, they are beautiful and look like you and me." Dominick pushed Kaleigh into the nursery, where his parents and Felicia were all oohing and aahing over the pups.

Kaleigh looked at her daughters with happy tears. They were so beautiful, and Dr. Galt said they were identical twins. Kaleigh started laughing, and everyone looked at her in surprise.

"Alpha Dillon, the twins look just like the dolls you had made for them. We don't know their eye color yet, but they have my hair with tan skin." Everyone else started laughing too. Alpha Dillon grinned like a fool as he held one of the pups in his arms. He was in love with them already.

"So are you two going to tell us their names, or are you going to make us guess?" Alannah was holding the other pup but walked to Kaleigh and placed the pup in her mother's arms.

"We have decided to name them after my parents because, without their sacrifice, these two wouldn't be here. So meet Jasmine and Brandie." Dominick leaned down and kissed Kaleigh's forehead.

Kaleigh and Dominick knew that no matter what happened, they would do everything they could to protect their daughters. Kaleigh understood why her parents chose to protect her because she would die before she let someone hurt Jasmine or Brandie. She hoped it wouldn't come to that, but that was a sacrifice she was willing to make.
