You Promised
Alpha Jasper's POV
It's midnight and the pain in my chest is becoming unbearable.
Sleep just can't come, my head is a jumble. All I think about now is my mate who is sleeping a few blocks away. I want to hold her in my arms so badly that it hurts. Jax, my wolf has withdrawn with grief, he can't imagine us giving her up so soon. She has misunderstood everything so much.
I can't take this anymore.
We have to work out our differences and not run away from each other. My mother and sister, we face together as mates and come to an agreement with them. They have to respect my mate, their Luna. Rain and I belong together, we are one, which was reaffirmed by the Moon Goddess a few hours ago. I jump out of bed and head to the walk-in closet. There I put on a pair of jeans and a hoodie. I step out of my apartment, take the elevator to the main floor and walk out of the packhouse. I have two options here. If I take the car, I'll be at my father-in-law's house in a minute. But that will make so much noise, the whole house will wake up when I park in front. No, I just jog there, it will only take me five minutes.
Doubtingly, I remain standing.
I remember Rain loves Lely's, she used to grow them herself in the packhouse garden. They are still there but not as well cared for as when she did it all by herself. Some maids take care of the garden now but more as a duty, less with their hearts. I walk over and see some beautiful ones standing there, in full bloom. I pick four, one each for my little family. A piece of foil around them and I'm ready to conquer my mate's heart once again.
Standing under her window, I see that the lights are out.
It was a long day, she was probably exhausted and fell asleep immediately. Effortlessly I climb up and when I am in front of her room window, I squeak inside. My heart skips a beat at what I see there. Rain is leaning against the bedboard, tears streaming down her cheeks like a waterfall. I can't believe my eyes. When I feel the window, I notice it is not locked. Silently I push it up and step into the bedroom. My movements catch her attention and she raises her head with a jerk.
"Jasper," she sobs.
Quickly I walk over to her and take her in my arms. "Ooohh my love. Why do you stress yourself?" I whisper into her hair. "Do you remember what we promised each other on the first day of our mating?" I ask her as I pull her towards me so that her head rests on my chest. Without waiting for her answer, I continue. "We made a pinky promise that we would tell each other everything and never let anyone come between us. We swore to be one body and soul". I pause to grab her by the arms.
"Rain, I've always kept that promise. All those years when you were gone, I was broken with grief and loneliness, I knew this day would come," I tell her emotionally. "I knew you would continue to love me despite everything. I almost lost you through circumstances of fate, but the Moon Goddess answered my prayers." I see her swallow, her eyes still sad. "I swear to you I never touched Rachel for a day. No other woman, for that matter. I belong to you, in body and spirit, my love," I pledge to her. "And as for my family, we will face them, you and I, side by side. I underestimated their bullying in the past, thinking that as women among yourselves, you would know how to resolve the issue. When I noticed that you were weighed down by everything, it was too late and you had already made up your mind to leave. That won't happen again, my love".
This time I see cautious hope appearing in her eyes.
"Then why didn't you come looking for me? What took you so long? I lived in Human Town for two years, why didn't you come and get me?" she reproaches me. Now I grasp her face tenderly. "I've been looking for you from day one. You left when I was on business and already had quite a head start. It rained that day so your scent was washed away," I tell her quickly. "You covered your tracks well. All the cities and packs we searched. I finally found you when you called Ruth and had her come to you so she could study at the University. You were rich enough then. I looked at all the papers".
"Jax felt insulted by you leaving us and didn't want to get you. He thought you should come to us since you were the one who left. So I devised the plan to buy a large piece of land and hire the company you worked for to do the construction. And that's where I met you. I was crazy with joy when I noticed that our mate bond was still active. You went right with me to our penthouse. And that's when we received the twins, two wonderful days together".
Rain is smiling broadly now, my words had touched her.
"But you left again despite me assuring you everything would be fine. You didn't trust me," I indicate, hurt. "And I feared you would do the same again tonight. I won't survive that a third time, Rain. I demand that you keep your promise. We'll solve our problems together, you promised". I stare at her expectantly, my heart beating like crazy. I may be that strong Alpha of a large pack, the future King or something, but all that is nothing if I lose my mate again. Rain is my heart and without her, this life has no meaning.
She doesn't answer but takes me by the hand.
"I can't climb out the window anymore, Jasper. We'll have to take the front door," she giggles. We get up from the bed and walk out of her bedroom with my hand in hers....
