She Will Come Back

It is almost midnight and I am trying to get some work done.
My concentration is lost, no matter how hard I try to read the letters on the paper, I just can't. My thoughts constantly wander to my Rain. It is Full Moon again, wherever she is, I am sure she will have crawled anxiously into a corner. I never managed to get it out of her from whence this fear of the Full Moon comes. Certainly, Lupercalia brings her nightmares since our pup just kept postponing his arrival and pack members mocked her. But I always get the feeling there's more behind it.
I stand up again and slide the curtain hanging in front of the glass wall.
My eyes are fixed tightly on the Full Moon that's staring back. Two light clouds float in front of it and then remain still. Then parts begin to detach and take shape. I keep my eyes fixed on the spectacle, it is so integrating to see how the tufts all form an image like a puzzle. And then I recognized the impression they made. But I cannot believe what I see, this must be an illusion. I rub my eyes and stare again at the two images. They are copies of each other, they are twins. Two chubby baby faces are staring at me.
What does this mean?
My heart starts beating hard in my chest. Twins? What does all this mean, is this a prediction? I haven't had sex with anyone but Rain since I was eighteen. She was enough for me, we complemented each other perfectly. The last time we slept was more than three months ago now. Could Rain be pregnant with twins? My lips part to get more oxygen into my system. No, I dare not think about that. It's not possible. If Rain were pregnant, she would unquestionably have come back to me on her own. She would then triumph over the pack and all reasons to stay away would be solved. She knows that I too, look forward to pups from both of us, and I would be overjoyed if we were pregnant. No, this is an illusion.
I turn away from that Full Moon.
We must hurry, my patience is running out. The wait is for a move by Magda where we can catch her red-handed and then have reason to interrogate her. Jace told me an hour ago that Clair has agreed to cooperate in befriending Magda. She is eager to collaborate with Rain's return now that she notices the pain her absence means to me. I make a mental note that I will give her a fat bonus when this is all over. 'Jasper, Magda went with Rachel to see Kenston and Ana, your in-laws. If that isn't remarkable?' Jace contacts me in the mind link about Magda's movements. 'She's barely two days into the pack and no one but Rain's parents have her interest. Do you believe it's a coincidence?'

I smile. Of course, it isn't.
The bird gets closer to the cage. 'Were you able to hear what the conversation was about?' I ask him. 'Nope,' I couldn't get any closer. You know Kenston has a keen sense of smell. What could I explain if he caught me eavesdropping!" he chuckles. We both know that my father-in-law would give him a formidable beating before asking the questions. Kenston hates rudeness and punishes it right away. He is a firm believer in discipline and respect. 'They were at the pool. Did you hear anything there?' I ask him now. 'Yes, they were talking about Rain. At least Rachel did. But I felt Magda was prodding her to talk about her sisters and you know how much Rachel hates Rain. She wasn't outspoken about your mate'.
This last statement half-shifts my wolf.
Jax hates Rachel. According to him, she is a shameless bitch without self-respect. He doesn't tolerate her close. But Rachel keeps ignoring that and keeps trying to seduce me. She has always been jealous of her younger sister but really shouldn't be with me for revenge. For a long time, I have made it clear to my pack that I have only one mate and that is the one the Moon Goddess gifted me. No one takes her place whether she has a wolf or not.
'Okay. Kenston will be in my office and want you to join us, Jace,' I let him know. Ten minutes later, both men are standing before me. "Alpha, you sent for me. Have you heard something from Rain? Was a body found or something?" he asks emotionally. I shake my head in denial. "Kenston, please answer my questions. You met our guest yesterday, she visited your house with Rachel. Tell me what you think of her," I say to my father-in-law. He looks at me puzzled at first but soon stiffens in his chair. "Did she have anything to do with Rain?" he inquires, stuttering. "She did want to know a lot about Rain. She only asked a few questions but let my mate and I go on and on about our lost daughter."

I stare at him sternly.
"Has nothing else struck you about the woman?" I ask the former Beta. The man is silent for a moment, thinking. "Well, Ana said later that Rain's scent on the woman calmed her down, made her forget for a moment that she had disappeared into the sea," he explains slowly. "She was so enthusiastic about it that she almost couldn't sleep." He thinks about his words for a moment and suddenly jumps out of his apathetic posture. Since he learned of Rain's death, Kenston has changed completely. He has crawled into himself and barely comes out in public anymore.
"Jasper, do you think my baby is still alive?" he asks, dejected. "You said that as long as we don't have a body, we have to keep hoping." In his eyes I see a glimmer of hope light up. I decide to be open and honest with him. "Yes, Kenston. Rain is alive. And I'll be damned if I don't find her," I swear. "That Magda, who has been at your house, she will lead us to her. You just confirmed that she knows more about Rain than she admits. Mark my words, Rain is coming back to this pack"...
