Eavesdropping

Like a broken man, Kenston gets up and leaves.
It breaks my heart to see a once influential man who ruled the pack next to my father with an iron hand so defeated because one of the pearls in his crown is untraceable. But his attitude is a reflection of my own feelings. And I am determined to fulfill my promise to him. Rain returns in my arms, exactly where the Moon Goddess destined her to be.
I turn to Jace, who silently follows everything.
"We have the confirmation mostly in about Magda," I hold out to him. "Now try to bring Clair up to more speed. I can't wait to confront the woman with the information we have. Although she doesn't seem evil to me. I'm almost certain she was sent by Rain but I want to know the why". Jace still looks absent-minded, and I wait for him to speak. "We can get Alpha Esis involved in all this too. He is a big supporter of the mate bond. I'm sure he'll help get you and Rain back together. Besides being an excellent warrior, he is also a righteous man," he suggests.
I nod affirmatively.
"That seems right. With that, let's wait for Clair's report. Everything depends on what she has accomplished in this all," I indicate. And then I get an idea. "Why don't we throw a party? Women her age loosen up a lot after some alcohol and fun. Clair only has to stay sober and focused on getting more out of her. How about that?" I consult my Beta. He looks up in surprise. "Yes, that's a great idea. I could also use some leisure right now. The past few weeks have been stressful," he agrees. "We're not making it big, especially since the news of Rain's death is still fresh. And not at the packhouse, I'm arranging one of the clubs. It'll be a private thing".
Jace is suddenly back to his old self.
The prospect of extricating himself from this case for some time seems quite appealing to him. I chuckle when I see with how much haste he leaves my office to organize the party. It is late now; I decide to go to my apartment and get some needed sleep. The day was mentally exhausting for me. My thoughts keep wandering to Rain and the reason why she still stays away from me. I thought our relationship was solid. And the last time we were together, she had reaffirmed her love for me repeatedly. On two heavenly days we enjoyed each other, expressed our feelings with our bodies and with words. There must be a weighty reason why she fled and is not coming back.
In thought, I step off the elevator and head to my doors.
But then I remain frozen in place. I am now at the door of Magda's quarters and hear some noises inside. I sharpen my were-hearing and indeed, I listen to her talking on the phone and laughing. "No, Saray, not much yet. No, give me a few more days and then I'm sure I'll have news for you," I hear her say. "You only gave me the name the waitress told you and no other concrete clue".
Saray!!!
That's the name the man who suddenly appeared called the woman in the restaurant. The woman I'm sure was Rain. I can't believe my ears, if that's not the best evidence that Magda is involved, I'll eat my own shoe. But what is the connection between the three women? Why is Magda here instead of Rain or that Saray? 'Jasper, keep your cool,' Jax intervenes now. 'I have a feeling everything will become clearer during the party. Something is about to happen. Don't go in there now. Just trust me,' he insists as I take a few steps toward Magda's apartment.
I find myself in doubt.
Should I follow my wolf's advice or just my heart? This whole issue is killing me, I desperately need answers, I need my mate with me soon. 'Jasper, I need her too. But if we want the solution to this mystery surrounding Saray and Rain, we have to be patient for a while. The party, Jasper, I sense this is going to be the breakthrough'. I swallow hard, yes, I can wait another night. Knowing Jace, it will be held as early as tomorrow night. Taking a deep breath, I slowly let it out again.
'Okay. But please, let everything end well. This is all becoming too much for me,' I finally agree and walk into my apartment. After what I've just heard, it's impossible to fall asleep right away. My brain is working overtime, in my mind I am creating all kinds of scenarios for tomorrow night. I walk over to my liquor cabinet and pour myself a double whiskey. On my terrace, I throw myself into one of the chairs, close my eyes and hang back. I don't want to look at the Full Moon anymore, see the two baby faces and make all kinds of fantasies that they are Rain and mine. All this is going to drive me crazy if it goes on like this.
But even with my eyes closed, the visions don't disappear, they just come in a different form.
My eyelids seem glued together. Before me, I see a battlefield where a bloody war is going on. Men and women fight, and packs face each other. It is cruel, one wolf after another is killed, and the heartrending cries are almost impossible to hear. And amidst all bloodshed, a great ball of light comes from the sky. The light blinds everyone on the battlefield. A melodious voice breaks the silence that follows. 'I am the Moon Goddess Selene. I command you to cease the fight for power. Form a new Kingdom until I find it time to replace it with mine.'
Startled, I jerk my eyes open.
This is the first time I have dreamed of Selene, never before has she shown herself to me. What is this? Why is she sending me this vision? I have nothing to do with the Kingdom, all I want is to get my mate again and maintain my pack. The scent of Lycans I discovered with Magda suddenly comes back to me. What does this mean?...
