Elena Knows
Wide-eyed I face the unknown man in front of me.
Out of nowhere he appeared in front of me and now I wondered if he was at the door all the time. "Who are you?" I ask rudely. The man looks at me almost submissively. He is of Esis age, also athletically built.
"I'm Harvey, Luna. The Head Warrior of Midnight Moon," he answers in awe. "I am here for your safety. Alpha Esis has ordered me to take you anywhere you want as long as you are safe." Relieved, I listen to him. I was afraid he would stop me from leaving the house. "I'm on my way to the private airstrip," I inform him. "You won't let the Alpha know until after I leave. Not before." He hesitates but nods anyway. Then he walks away to get the car.
When the Maserati is in front of me, Harvey gets out and puts my suitcase in the trunk.
Then he opens the door for me and I drop into the back seat. We drive down the long driveway to the main road. It's quiet in the car, the warrior looking sternly ahead while I study the passing trees. Getting away from Esis is hard, but I need space to think. Without his overwhelming presence around me, a few weeks on my own will clear my mind and help me decide how to go further in this relationship. Glancing at the time on my phone, I notice that I have almost forty-five minutes before the Jet arrives. I choose to visit Elena at school and say goodbye to her. She won't quite understand what this is all about, but at least someone in my family knows where to find me.
"Harvey, can you drive me to the school community nearby? I want to visit my sister," I let the man at the wheel know. He nods and five minutes later, I see the school in sight. When the car is parked, I quickly get out and rush to the entrance. I grab my phone and call my little sis. "Elena, I am at the gate of the school. Would you please meet me here?" I ask her. "Magda!" she exclaims. "I'm in the cafeteria right now. Wait for me, I'll be right there". A minute later, I see her running in my direction.
"What are you doing here, sis?" she asks, hugging me tightly. "Shouldn't you be with your handsome hubby?"
I kiss her and take her away from Harvey. Werewolves have sharp hearing, I already know that. "Elena, I'm going to visit Saray for a few weeks. I need some space to think," I let her know. Surprised, she stares at me. "Thinking? What's going on, Magda? You're not planning to divorce Esis, you can't. He loves you, if you have problems, you have to talk them out". I am startled by her wisdom, is my sister really only twelve? "I have no intention of divorcing and I just want to be alone for a while, without him," I remark. "Esis is a werewolf. He revealed it to me last night. All the time I thought he was joking when he called me Luna," I tell her sadly.
Elena, too, is startled by my statement.
"A werewolf? Did you hear him correctly?" she asks, dismayed. "So, are Ralph, Rain, Eric and Ivor werewolves too? They are all friends of Esis. Ralph is even his best friend". A cold hand folds over my heart. What Elena voices there is quite possible. But I'm not married to my friends, if they were werewolves, I could absolutely live with that. "I don't know, but I will ask Saray about it when we meet. Besides, that wouldn't matter anything to me. They are wonderful people that I definitely want to keep in my life," I declare.
I see my younger sister biting her lower lip now.
She stares at the ground; something is on her mind. "What is it, Elena, wouldn't you love Saray anymore if she were a werewolf?" I ask her. Her head shoots up. "Absolutely I would. I love Saray and nothing can make that go away. I was just thinking about the night at the table when they were all acting so strangely," she points out. "I can almost say with certainty that they are all werewolves. Ivor too". At the last mention of this, I keep a strict eye on Elena. I have a feeling she has a crush on this man so much older than her. "So, would you have a problem with that? You guys are good friends," I say cautiously. She smiles absently and stares into the distance for a moment.
"No, but I do wish he would confess to me honestly," she says in thought.
Her comment has so much to do with Esis and me. Would I have accepted him if he had told me before our marriage that he was different? Is his fear of losing me the reason for his hesitation and is leaving him alone for that the right thing to do? I swallow and stroke my mark. Esis said that with the mark we are forever connected. But I have the mark and he doesn't. Does this mean he can be seduced by other women, though? I beckon to my sister. "Look, Esis has given me a mark. With this, we are soulmates not only through marriage vows," I tell her proudly.
She looks at it with interest.
"Yes, there is a wolf with it. How beautiful it is, Elena," she responds admiringly. She looks into the distance again. "Magda, will you bring me a letter for Ivor?" she asks. "He was supposed to call me but hasn't so far." I nod and she takes a paper and a pen out of her bag. I wait until she finishes writing and take the note she has taped tightly from her. "Be assured he gets it," I suggest. "Listen, can you keep all that werewolf stuff to yourself for a while and not tell mom and dad yet? When I've thought everything through with Esis, I'll explain it all to them," I plea to her.
She jumps around my neck. "Of course, sis. And don't forget to call me when you arrive. As soon as the school vacations arrive in a few weeks, I will go to see Saray and Ivor myself"...
