Still Magda's POV
Rachel keeps her word.
Early the following day she is at my door. Quickly I put on a pair of leggings and a sports bra. We walked outside the packhouse to the sports center. She is so excited to take me to the training ground. "Magda, have you worked out before? Or done exercises?" she asks. I shake my head. "No, not specifically. But my background is one of hard work and lots of routine in my parents' plots. That's why I was able to stay slim," I enlighten her.
When we reach the training ground, I see Cleo standing there.
"Hi Magda, Jace told me you are training with us today. We'll do the basics first to gauge your strength," he indicates. I nod and he beckons a woman standing some distance away from us. "Clair, this is Magda. Today is her first day here. I want to know her strength. Go from easy to medium," he instructs the blonde woman. "Hi Magda, let's get started," she says and we walk to the other side of the room. An hour later, I fall to the floor exhausted, sweat dripping down my back and face. "Clair, I'm dead. I really can't go on," I gasp. The woman stands grinning above me, looking like she just started the workout.
Ooohh well, she's a werewolf while I'm just a simple human being.
"You've countered well, Magda. You are definitely not the weakest. With some more training, you could well be in the top ten of this pack," she compliments me. "How long will you stay here? I'd like to continue training with you". I lean up on my elbows. "Depends. The Alpha has offered to stay as long as I want, so I'm in no hurry," I tell her. "And I would like to come every day. When I go back, I want to surprise my mate with my renewed strength. I don't want to be that weak human he has to protect anymore". Clair gives me a hand and helps me up.
In the distance, I see Rachel busy training.
She seems to be excellent in what she does, having already gotten two women unconscious on the ground. Clair follows my gaze and witnesses me looking at Rachel. "Rachel is the daughter of a Beta and naturally stronger than the other she-wolves," she notes. "In fact, she needs an Alpha-female to measure her strength. But the Luna is not here and Alpha Jasper has no sisters. So Rachel consoles herself by defeating one she-wolf after another as if it were an art". Another piece of news. "Really, but Jace is the Beta of this pack, isn't he? He's too young to have a daughter as old as Rachel. And the two obviously don't like each other very much," I lecture her.
Clair laughs ironically.
"No, Rachel's father was the Beta of Jasper's father, the former Alpha who is now retired," she elaborates. "Rachel was always terribly jealous of Rain for finding her mate first. Not to mention Jasper had been infatuated with Rain since he was fifteen. When she turned eighteen, he promptly showed up at the door of her parent's house and told her father deadpan that he had come to get his mate." I couldn't believe my ears. "Are you serious, Clair or are you trying to be funny," I whisper in surprise. "Nope," she informs me dryly. "At sixteen, he asked her father for her hand. And when he himself turned eighteen, he confirmed to be Rain's fated mate and prepared her parents that he would pick her up on her eighteenth birthday. When Rain's wolf didn't appear on her birthday, she despaired. But Jasper got to her house, took her to the packhouse and two days later was their mating ceremony."
"Waw, that's so romantic. Are all werewolves that big on love?" I ask my new friend. "Sure. Most claim their mate equally. Alpha's are worse, they are so possessive and often mark their mate the same day," she answers me. I think back to Esis. Maybe he put off marking me on the spot when we first met because I am human. But Saray told me how he persuaded her to get me because his wolf protested against leaving the island without me. I get so emotional about Clair's story.
"But where did it go wrong, Clair? The Luna is not here".
The woman first looks guiltily at the ground and then lifts her head to stare into the distance. "We treated her terribly. She was mated with the Alpha for three years and we wanted pups," she says softly. "You see, werewolf communities are close-knit. We meddle in each other's lives and care less about the consequences. We just bullied her away". For a moment, I seem to see tears in her eyes. "We thought Alpha Jasper would move on with his life after she left. But he refused. The Elders have offered to find him a chosen mate. They almost lost their heads".
She wants to say something more, but Rachel approaches.
"Have you finished your training, Magda? Let's freshen up and go to the pool to do some laps. It will relax your muscles after this first day of training," she offers. I nod and greet Clair agreeing to be ready tomorrow morning. When we get to the packhouse and take the elevator, I turn to Rachel. "Pick me up in half an hour. Maybe we can visit your parents after the pool? I want to talk to more people in this pack than those in the packhouse". For a moment, Rachel looks at me dejectedly but gives in eventually. "No problem. I'll notify them that we're coming".
As I step into the room, I hear my phone ring. I'm sure it's Saray impatiently waiting to hear from me. But I am too sweaty now, after I take a bath I will call her back myself. So I take a relaxing bath first, wear my swimsuit under a wrap and dip my hand under the pillow to pull out my phone. ...
