Erase The Past
The days that follow are hectic.
I hardly get to see Magda, even at the dinner table she is absent. So is Rain, for that matter. And I notice that Ralph is really stressed now; he still looks pretty unsure of his mate. There is something between the two that is indefinable. They don't sleep in one room, and obviously don't have sex. For a Lycan, that is incomprehensible, they are known to be impatient and dominant when it comes to mating. And Ralph has definitely changed in his male role, I know him as a man who takes from women what he needs, compensates them richly for their services and then is unreachable, mentally as well as in person. But with Rain, I see him having a bunch of tolerance, he spoils her boundlessly and if she is not within eye reach, he is quite restless. For a man with a chosen mate, this is highly odd. He can at least be in love with her like humans, but the mate bond can only work when he has marked her. And even he hasn't gotten that far.
It is now three days before my wedding.
With Ralph, I am going to the fashion designer today to finally pick up my suit. Magda has chosen it for me, she wants our clothes to match. Ooohh well, I was already happy to leave it all to her, all I want is for her to stand next to me in three days and make her eternal promises to me. We marry human style and then I will start getting her ready for the werewolf side of me. Ink constantly scolds me, calls me a coward because I keep delaying this crucial moment and a kitten for participating in a wedding party that has absolutely no value to werewolves. Werewolves mark and mate and then our fate with our mate is sealed.
With broad strides I walk to the Maserati that is parked in front of the house.
Ralph leans against it; he has been waiting there for at least five minutes. "Believe me, if we weren't living between humans now, I would have already taken your head off," he growls angrily. "What took you so long? If my mate wanted to marry me, I'd be waiting at the door an hour before the store appointment," he reproaches me. I shake my head and jump behind the wheel. When he has taken his seat next to me, I start the car and we drive off.
"Ralph, are you planning to mate and mark Rain?" I ask him. "You seem pretty insecure in this relationship. Never before have I seen you like this, this woman has completely taken over your senses". He doesn't answer me immediately, first staring into the distance for about a minute and sighing deeply. "I love her so much, she is everything I desire and more. She wants to wait until she has met my family and is sure they accept her. That was so even before her amnesia. A fear of failure, I suppose," he tells me. "But your family has nothing to do with your relationship, right? She's your choice, you're already the King. No one dares to discuss your choice, not even your family. That is out of the question," I point out to him. Why do I feel like he's holding information about his relationship back? Every she-wolf would want to be mated with the King of the Royal Kingdom of Werewolves. It's a privilege. And the way Ralph is obsessed with Rain, she must have had a past traumatic experience to have any reservations about mating with such a handsome guy with enormous power. Ralph is the strongest Lycan on earth, in his worst rage, only the Moon Goddess can prevent him from wiping out the packs from the planet. His patience with Rian is decidedly unusual.
"Listen, on the night after my wedding, ask her to marry you. Then she'll already get used to the idea that you two belong together. By the time you get out of here, you'll be mated. Just mark her on the day of her installation," I advise him. I notice he is thinking, turning to the window lost in thought. There's more to it, damn sure! My friend is not telling me everything about his mate. There is an essential part missing in their relationship that is unclear to me. "Yeah, that's a good idea. After we get your suit, let's go to the jeweler to pick out an engagement ring for her. You are already experienced in this," he teases me. Then his face becomes more serious and expectantly I wait for his confession. Knowing more about what's going on between the two will also help me to advise him better. "Rain is rich. I had her accounts audited, she not only worked in the company but also had private clients from which she made considerable amounts of money," he begins. "I had her assets, including several expensive cars and five villas in prestigious neighborhoods put into a Holding Company. She can't remember any of her friends now, so I will appoint a temporary manager to commercialize these properties so they don't depreciate."
Actually, I expected another explanation.
"That's perfect. Rain will thank you later when her memory is back," I respond. But then I feel him stiffen. When I cast a sideways glance at his face, I see fear appear for a moment, but he quickly suppresses it. "Yes, when we get to the Kingdom, I will have her examined. The doctors do need to know how long her memory loss may last. Whether it is intentional or temporary," he replies slowly.
"I can also introduce you to some rock-solid specialists in this city who can examine her very competently. Then you will know soon enough about her mental state," I offer. Again he stiffens. Something is definitely wrong here.
"Ralph, do you really want Rain to remember the past again? What is there in her past that you want so badly to erase?" I ask him slowly....
