Scents
Alpha Jasper's POV
This Magda is not entirely by chance here in Storm Forest.
She is here with a plan. Jax, my wolf, could detect Rain's scent right from her. She was in Rain's company not long before I met her and not by accident but for quite some time. The two know each other; it was by no means a chance encounter. This woman knows more about my mate than she admits.
'Jace, join me in the office. I want to discuss something with you,' I mind link my Beta.
Within minutes, my door opens and he steps inside. He drops onto the guest chair in front of my desk and looks at me. "Jasper, what's up? This facial expression indicates serious business is going on," he states and sits right up.
"Jax caught Rain's scent on Magda and it wasn't light. The two know each other, Magda is here on an assignment," he states. "I don't know why Rain is hiding from me and sending her friend here." A feeling of immense disappointment comes over me, I just can't understand why my mate chooses to cause me so much pain. She knows I love her, the misery of the past two years was incredible. And after we met the last time, I thought everything would be okay but she chose to perform that disappearing act again.
"Jasper, Rain loves you. Why would she send Magda when she could come herself? She is the Luna of this pack, no one can do anything to her without risking their own lives. Everyone knows how much you love her and what you are capable of when it comes to your mate," my Beta indicates. I nod, what he says is true. Rain's safety is guaranteed here. "Maybe she wants to find out if the pack is still hostile to her before she returns and Magda should investigate?", I urge him. "I suggest you keep a close eye on Magda. See who she deals with and what questions she asks". Jace stares thoughtfully ahead. "You know, that feeling creeps me out all the time. Magda often makes slips of the tongue and her facial expressions often betray her. There is very definitely something she is performing in her shell," Jace also lets me know his suspicions.
"I saw that Cleo had her sparring with Clair at the training ground. The two seem to get along well. Instruct Clair to become friends with Magda and gain her trust. Maybe we'll find out more from there, too," I command. Jace nods affirmatively. "Yes, that's an option. I heard them say they were going to the pool. But Magda wanted to go to her room to freshen up first, which also puzzled me. The sports center has shower cabins," he indicated, musing.
"We should have suspected something when she asked to come along to the pack. I mean, what Luna goes with another Alpha on a visit to his pack without her mate?" I explain dryly. "Knowing Esis, he would absolutely not allow that. The man is possessive and proud as hell. I doubt he even knows she's here, believe me!". My Beta lets out a dry laugh. "Well, she privately explained to me that she and Esis were in a marital crisis and she wanted to spend some time apart from him," he now explains.
Skeptically, I look at him.
"And you took that for granted? Use your head! Since when do werewolf mates take a break? Really, Jace?" I scold him and let out a mocking laugh. "No, I let it pass to gain her trust. If she thinks I'm on her side, I might get to hear more about her plans. But I will indeed ask Clair to be closer to her. Rachel is also still hanging onto her, but I don't feel like their friendship goes deep enough. Magda distrusts her for some reason".
When Jace has left, I hang back in my chair and look out through the glass wall over the main street of my pack. And to my surprise, I saw the same woman I was just talking to my Beta about. Magda. She is walking with Rachel down the sidewalk toward the sports center. I look at the two women. What I did not reveal to my Beta is, that in addition to Rain's scent, there is also that of Lycans with our new guest. Lycans can only be found in the Kingdom. Rain and the Kingdom are the main clues Magda carries with her. Does this mean she met Rain in the Kingdom? What would my mate be doing there?
It may be time to search there.
As an Alpha, I can only go there with an invitation from the King. But I'm allowed to send my Beta there to take a look. Jace makes friends easily and can search among the residents to see if Rain lives there. But not yet. First, I need to find out with what motive Magda is here, then confront her with our findings and force a confession. Her confessions might lead us straight to my mate. I need to find Rain, I need answers from her to all my questions. No, I just need her with me. Need her to breathe normally and stay alive. To function and extinguish the yearning fire inside me. I can't believe she's doing this on purpose.
"Rain, my love!" I whisper desperately to myself. "Why? Why this? I promised you everything would be all right. If only you trusted me and came back". The pain in my chest that arises is almost unbearable.
But then I look up. And I see the Full Moon slowly appearing. Full and round. It shines right on me and brings a resigned feeling over me. It's like a comfort it gives me, an assurance that everything will be all right. I rise from my chair and stare at the moon that keeps emerging from its hiding place in the clouds. Yes, I will find her again. And this time we will be together forever.
I am reassured....
