I Owe Her
Alpha Jasper's POV
Rooted in my seat, I stare at the couple in front of me.
The story they have just told me seems unreal. This is a nightmare from which I could wake up at any moment. It can't be true. My Rain, my mate!
It was really her in the restaurant.
She had felt the mate bond, it was not dead from her side. She is suffering from amnesia, she is not dead. She is being kept in limbo by the current King, Ralph, who is determined to make her his Queen in a few weeks. This cannot happen to me, Rain is mine. Rain or Saray, she is the Luna of Storm Forest. The King has stolen my mate.
My eyes go from Magda to Alpha Esis.
A suspicion creeps up on me that they are keeping something from me, they are not telling me everything. They are trying to spare me pain. Magda told me that Rain doesn't really feel the mate bond with the King, she doesn't act like his fiancé or mate. More like a friend. And she too, feels that there is something in her past that is too important to ignore. She has the need to know before her marriage. My mate knows in her subconscious that the King is not her fated.
Before Magda did the whole story, I had to swear not to take action right away.
I promised to control myself. Alpha Esis knows that we werewolves are impulsive when it comes to our mates. And yes, I have to heavily suppress Jax right now not to shift. He demands that we get our mate and bring her home. Rain is ours and I am in complete agreement with that. Jace sat silently, all the while listening to the story. His eyes only turned blood red with anger. "Alpha, we must confront the King. It is against the Were-laws for him to claim a she-wolf that belongs to another. It is highly punishable," he growled furiously.
Alpha Esis chimes in.
"Saray left you of her own volition. She worked for two years in the King's company where they met," he points out. "Technically, he didn't appropriate her. I met them at my club even before the boat accident. Ralph introduced her to me as his fiancé and she didn't refute that," he reminds us. "Rain chose Ralph herself, without coercion." I shake my head incredulously. Does this mean I've lost my mate forever? No, I don't accept that, I need to speak to Rain. Now that her situation has changed, she might make a different decision.
"And besides, here we are talking about the King, the strongest Lycan in existence. He loves Saray deeply and will definitely not give her up. The man will fight until his last breath. Jasper, you'll never win this fight," he keeps telling me, and he's right, too. But I have to get Rain back, at all costs. "I need to speak to her. I want to hear everything from her mouth, she owes me an explanation. I'm her mate, damn," I slowly awaken from my apathy and the same anger I see in Jace begins to ignite in me. I mean, Rain is not a piece of property that the King can steal, for God's sake! She is a living being, she has control over her own life. Blindsiding her is not what a King is supposed to do.
Esis nods.
"Yes, I would want that too, in your situation," he agrees. "But we will have to proceed carefully. You will only be able to meet her in Human Town. But Ralph always sends her with his Secretary Eric or Chief Warrior Ivor. And they are loyal to him, in all cases".
"I have an idea. She needs to go back to Human Town to re-fit her wedding dress that is being altered," Magda recalled. "Maybe you can meet her in the dressing room. I'll distract Ivor, I don't think Eric will come with me to the shop. He's too full of himself," she adds belatedly. "And when is that? I want to meet her as soon as possible," I insist. Then I see Magda hesitate, I'm so convinced she's not telling me everything. "What is it, Magda? I sense you are hiding something from me," I state, annoyed. "Come clean."
Magda turns to Esis who shakes his head.
"Alpha, Saray will tell you that herself. That's not something for me to make you aware of," she replies softly. I swallow my anger, she is already helping me tremendously without me also putting pressure on her. Whatever it is, I am sure to find out. We exchange phone numbers.
"Alpha, the plan looks like this," Esis summarizes. "When Saray leaves for Human Town, we'll send you a message with our accommodations. We don't tell her anything, meeting you will be a surprise for her. She has already recognized you once and she still feels the mate bond. So it is up to you to inform her further". I nod, this is more than I can ask of the man. Ralph is his best friend and he is still willing to do this for me, I greatly appreciate this. "Alpha Esis, why are you willing to help me and betray your friend?" I ask him anyway. "The King can do more for you than I'm able to. Our packs are even rivals. What benefit do you get from helping me?".
He sighs and strokes his mate over her hair.
"I owe Saray my life. She made sure I could have Magda. It's damn hard to be mated with a human who knows nothing about werewolves," he echoes. "I have sworn Saray my boundless loyalty."
We emphasize our agreement and say goodbye.
It is obvious that the two are in a hurry to be alone. Magda's arousal was already noticeable when she entered my room and I was surprised that they even stayed in my room for so long. But now I must allow them their privacy. With a smile, I return to my desk. One more night without sleep.
And I don't think it will have any rest for the next few nights either.
Until I meet my Rain again....
