Change Will Come

'Jasper, these two days will always remain in my memory. You are the best mate a woman can have, your love for me is honest and genuine and I thank you for that. I know you want me and as incredible as it sounds, my heart belongs to you. But I cannot be selfish. You are the Alpha of the largest pack in the world. You are the future president of the Werewolf Council. You are a great leader. And next to such a perfect Alpha as you belong a perfect Luna. And that can't be me. I'm only human. And on top of that, I cannot offer you an heir. Forgive me, I cannot do this to you. Not let you alienate your family and pack to be with me. So I set you free for the second and last time. Know that your pain is mine too. All the best to you, my mate. My wish is for the Moon Goddess to bless you with a house full of pups and for you to have the happiest life. Forever yours. Rain'.
I'm sitting on the terrace of Ralph's fantastic penthouse.
It is the most luxurious I have ever come across. It has the same facilities as mine and more. Everything here screams wealth. Not that I am impecunious, but I suspect my bank account can't match Ralph's by far.
And now I'm lying on the couch in my bikini, sunbathing on the open patio.
Ten minutes ago, Jasper sent me a text asking if I had made all the arrangements to be ready to leave with him for Storm Forest. We would still shop at the mall and some exclusive fashion houses. And then it was time for me to inform him of my decision. It wasn't easy for me to send him the text, but I know it's for the best. After pressing the 'send' button, I immediately turn off my phone and take out the SIM card. Ralph bought me a new one, although now I have almost no one to call or stay in touch with. Ruth and John are busy with their campus lives and Natali is not really a trusted friend. I know the workplace gossip was led by her.
After inserting the new SIM card, I stare ahead.
This time it's definitely over between Jasper and me. Back then, when I gave Ruth my address to get permission from Jasper to leave the pack, I actually expected to meet him any minute. Only I didn't think it would happen at the workplace. Seeing him again after all this time felt so good, in fact, I yearned for our meeting. I had missed him terribly all those years, I needed him to ease my misery and loneliness. But now that reality has presented itself again, it is time for our paths to separate permanently. No more encounters that only toughen a separation.
Ralph actually asked me to marry him a few hours ago.
Maybe I should accept that now. As his wife, there would be no turning back for me. A line will then be drawn permanently under the relationship between Jasper and me. "Did you do it?" asks Ralph behind me, just stepping onto the terrace with two glasses of cold white wine in his hands. He hands me a drink and watches me cautiously. I sip at the wine and nod in the affirmative. "And the other SIM card is already in my device," I told him.
"Perfect, babe," he replies with satisfaction.
Suddenly there is music in the air. Surprised, I look at Ralph and see a smile on his face. He takes my glass from my hand and places it on the patio table. Then pulls me up in his arms and together we move to a slow rhythm. First, we look into each other's eyes; I read joy and relief in Ralph's. I smile reassuringly at him, grab his waist and lay my head against his chest. With our eyes closed, we rock to the music. It feels so good in his arms, almost fantastic.
"Rain. Have you thought about my words? You could live in the Kingdom with me as my wife, you know," he whispers in my ear. I stiffen for a moment but think how good I would be with him. Ralph loves me and that's enough for both of us. And he knows I don't have a wolf and can't give him pups. And yet he chooses me. He does not have to provide offspring, there is no pack waiting for him to guarantee their existence.
"Yes, I've thought about it," I reassure him. "It sounded like you proposed to me. But first, I want to see what life is like in the Kingdom among the Lycans. And if your family accepts me as I am. I don't want a repeat of the past". Ralph holds me more firmly against him. "I promise they will have no problem with what you see as flaws. They will love you, because you make me happy".

His words do me so much good.
If everything goes according to plan and his family indeed welcomes me, the future looks promising. "I hope so, Ralph, that's all I want. Then we can have a peaceful and good life together," I sigh. But then I feel his heart beating faster and his breathing coming out jolting. The energy in his aura intensifies and threatens to suffocate me. "Ralph, what's the matter? What has upset you?" I ask worriedly. When I want to lift my head from his chest to look him in the face, he won't let me. With his hand, he presses me more firmly against him.
"It's nothing. We're just going to relax these days and enjoy the trip," he indicates, deep in thought. "In the Kingdom, things will become clear. Then circumstances will be different and you will decide whether you can go along with the changes."
"Ralph! You speak in riddles. What will change? Will you change then?" I ask curiously. He gently pulls my head back so I can look him in the eye. "Never. To you, I will always remain the same. Never forget that. The circumstances around us may vary, but my love for you will always stay the same". But I need more clarification on what he is referring to and he doesn't seem intent on explaining more.
Ooohh well, after all the commotion of the past few days, I don't need more disruption in my life. As Ralph said, we are going to enjoy the days ahead. What awaits in the Kingdom, we will then deal with when we get there. ...
