No Luna

Alpha Jasper's POV

Another Lupercalia Full Moon without my mate.
Last year she wasn't here either and this year I'll miss her either. If it were up to me alone, I would be aboard the next plane to her right now. But with a reluctant wolf, that is definitely hard, we fight all day to make the right decision.
According to Jax, our mate should come back to us, not the other way around.
When she left, we lost face considerably. After I did everything to keep our relationship sound, it was the last I thought she would do to hurt me. Not that I had to put much effort into making her happy, I love Rain, she is my first and only lover. But she didn't trust me enough to share her grievance with me and left me without considering my feelings. That's harsh, I always thought our trust in each other was ironclad.
Some pack members reacted with relief over her departure, urging me to reject her as a mate and ban her from the pack. Officially, she is still my mate and a member of Storm Forest, which stings many, including her sister Rachel. Since Rain disappeared, Rachel has been around me constantly. She suggested this morning that I mark her as my mate and Luna and do the chase on her during the Lupercalia Full Moon festival. Absolutely not! I can't stand Rachel acting this way, knowing that her sister is my fated mate. I have done little to keep her away from the packhouse, and especially these last few weeks, her behavior is starting to irritate me to no end. She acts like the Luna of Storm Forest, commands the workers unpleasantly and walks into my chamber without knocking as if she has every right to be there. Not even Ruth, Rain's other more respected sister, exhibited such behavior. This all has to stop before it gets out of hand.
"Alpha, I have all the information you asked me for. I also made a solid offer on the selected land on your behalf and it looks like the real estate agent is considering us as serious buyers. No wonder because you offered almost double the asked cost". In front of me is my Beta, Jace. We are wrapping up some business deals. He places some documents before me to go through. My eyes pass over the papers; it all looks perfect. So I put my signature and handed my Beta back the pieces.
"Okay, arrange the necessary logistics to transfer the land to the company's name. At the same time, have a public tender go out for our plans. Then we can get started next month," I instruct him. Jace nods and walks away to do his work. I fall back into my chair and stare ahead. Tonight I lead the pack again in the sacrificial feast at the cave, after which I initiate the hunt. And then I will come to the packhouse, as I had done all the years when Rain was there. There is no reason for me to hang around there, the one I need to chase is far from me. I miss my Rain so much. But soon ...
"Jasper, are you ready for the run to the cave yet? It's almost time".
Rachel interrupts my musings by suddenly entering my office with seductively swinging hips. Thinking about the mindset I'm in now, her behavior is by no means acceptable. My mate is not with me, the hollow feeling of lack in my stomach takes my mood to point zero. My wolf is as restless and unstable as I am at the moment. Growling slightly, I lurch out of my chair, Jax going for her head. Seeing me partially shift, Rachel takes a few steps back. "Jasper, w hat's goin' on?" she stammers. When she witnesses my eyes turn blood red, she turns and runs out of the packhouse.
'Jasper, you really need to show this bitch her place now!' roared Jax. 'She assumes to be able to take the place of our mate. Get rid of this whore before I take action'. He was never impressed with Rachel, who is out to conquer her sister's mate. According to Jax, Rachel is jealous of Rain, since she was not able to find her own mate and begrudges Rain and I love each other.
But now I have no time to concern myself with my wolf's grievances.
A pack of nearly fifteen hundred horny wolves, burning to mate, awaits me. As their Alpha, I must lead them to the sacred cave to make an offering to the Moon Goddess, calling for her to bless us with fertility. Storm Forest wants to expand big time, we need a lot of pups for that. Pups that Selene denies my mate and me. I swallow a few times and push my emotions away. My Gamma is walking toward me when I arrive at my office door. "Alpha, the pack is waiting impatiently. But tell me, are you joining the chase this year?", Kenrick inquires. My head jerks up at his question. Anje, Kenrick's mate and Rain are arch-enemies. Anje often pestered Rain that she just won't get pregnant. Does Kenrick's comment have anything to do with that? I wonder.

My Gamma immediately feels the shift in my aura, through my eyes Jax stares at him spitefully.
"Jasper, no. I didn't mean anything by it," he apologizes right away. "But Rachel informed everyone that she's your partner at the festival this year. She said you're participating in the chase. If so, Jace or I will have to free us up for extra security since an Alpha is vulnerable during the chase," he clarifies. I let out a deep sigh; it would affect me immensely if I had to bite my Gamma's head off. Disrespecting the Luna is a serious offense where I will spare no one.
"As long as the Luna of Storm Forest is not present at the Lupercalia Full Moon, I am not participating in the hunt. Let that be clear," I bite to him....
