Aware
It's hard.
Saying goodbye to people who had so warmly accepted you into their family is really not easy.
In the past few days I have forged a close bond with Peter, Perpetua treated me like her best friend, and Elena looked up to me so much. And Esau trusted me enough to know his family was safe around me. I am sure I will miss them wherever my journey takes me.
"Canada," Ralph informed me briefly when I asked where we were going next.
He had told me earlier that we were on our way to his hometown in Canada with his new yacht. And from the looks of it, his plans haven't changed. I hug each one of the family, maybe Peter a little longer. I can safely call him my friend, more than the others, he went out of his way to make me feel at home in his family. "As promised, I won't forget you. As soon as I'm settled, you'll hear from me again," I promise them.
Ralph helped me board, and once we were in the speed boat, we had to wait for Esis.
This one is clearly having a hard time saying goodbye to Magda. Ralph shakes his head as he looks at his friend. "Take it easy, my friend. One step at a time. This is your destiny," he calls out to his friend. I stare at him strangely, still not understanding his ambiguous words. Finally, Esis gets in and starts the engine. Waving, we sail further away from the people on the beach. "Ooohh man, I just found her and yet have to leave her behind. On the other hand, you are taking your mate with you, your life looks rosy now," mort Esis.
"Yes, your friendship is rewarded. You left everything behind to join me in my quest. Not for a moment did you hesitate when you saw me in need. And look how the Moon Goddess has rewarded you, my friend," Ralph held out to him emotionally. "Thanks so much. I got my fiancé back and you get the mate you've been craving for so long. Congratulations, Esis. It comes from the heart". The men get into a bro hug; I am left scratching my head. Uncomprehending, I look from one to the other. These two are talking in riddles. First, Magda is not like their kind and then those strange exclamations from Esis that sounded almost animalistic.
Do any of you mind telling me what species you belong to? Magda is not one of you and then still you refer to us women as your mate. As if we are your property instead of your women," I ask, annoyed. Again they exchange a mysterious look. "Rain, there's something I need to tell you." Ralph looks deep into my eyes. "Promise me you won't flinch. There are sharks in this sea if you should fall overboard from fright," he warns further, a bit teasingly. I frown; I have drifted in this sea and did come out in one piece. Ralph seems to be a drama person, I have to take that into account whenever we are in a conversation.
"Try your luck, my man," I urge him, looking at him skeptically.
What can he tell me that could scare me to the point of falling overboard? First, Peter and Esau underestimated me, and now my self-proclaimed fiancé is making that same mistake. God knows what's next. If he opens his mouth now, he must be sure that his statement is weighty enough. Otherwise, something will swing for him. The man in front of me clears his throat, takes another quick glance at Esis and holds me by the shoulders. "Do you know how you were able to kill the animals in the forest? That you could get that many together and the men couldn't?" he asks. I shake my head firmly. "What does all that have to do with you?" I scowl at him. "You're not trying to distract me to make me drop my question, are you?" I lecture him suspiciously.
Esis chuckles behind us.
"Your fiancé is trying to give you a soft landing, Rain. What he has to tell you might just throw you off your feet," he laughs. "You're very assertive nowadays, that's new." I begin to grow impatient, these men talk a lot. When they perceive my mood, Ralph takes me in his arms. He seems to have a great need to feel me close to him all the time. I wonder how far we have gone in the past, if we had shared the bed at all.
"Honey, all three of us here are werewolves. We were made for the hunt, few other species can do it better than us and the humans most certainly cannot," he explains to me in one breath. My mouth goes dry from shock. "Werewolves? You mean we can suddenly change from human to wolf?" I ask anxiously. There is silence for a moment. "It's a little complicated. I'm a Lycan and that's an exalted werewolf. You and Esis are ordinary werewolves, only Esis is an Alpha and that's a leader of a pack of wolves. And a wolf's partner is called a mate. We don't choose one ourselves, the Moon Goddess gives us one that suits us perfectly. Magda is Esis' mate and you are mine".
That's a lot to digest.
I take my time to process the information properly. "So the three of us can turn into a wolf. And in the woods, I turned into a wolf and killed all those animals. Esau already thought it strange that there were no gunshots in them," I let out. Again Ralph clears his throat again.
"There's more, Rain. I have a wolf that turns into a Lycan. A Lycan is ten times stronger and more robust than an ordinary wolf. An Alpha is stronger than the wolves in packs," Ralph patiently explains further. I nod and now understand what he means. "Rain, there is something I have yet to let you know." Surprised, I stare at him; he has already given me so much food for thought.
"Even though you are a werewolf, you have never shifted. When you turned eighteen, your wolf did not emerge. But you do possess the genes and traits. Hence, the hunt was successful for you," he informs me.
Oooohhh goodness! This wolf thing is getting more and more complicated....
