Chapter 46
It's Burris, and he's back.
I looked at him in surprise, suddenly feeling like everything before was a nightmare. the dream woke up when Burris came back.
"Cheryl, your rank is Marquis now, what happened?" Burris frowned at me, looking a little angry.
But this wasn't a dream, I had killed a lot of people to become a Marquis.
Is Burris angry with me?
"Bastard, you let go of my sister, that's a question you should ask the elders! They're just as despicable as you are." Cecil said angrily, trying to snatch me back.
Burris took a sprint backwards with me in his arms and Cecil grabbed at me.
"Did Hampton and Mopso get you?" Burris asked looking at me.
His face turned a little grim, but I knew it wasn't directed at me.
The aggravation spread through me. I suddenly wanted to tell Burris about the painful two days I'd been going through.
I raised my arms around Burris's neck and whispered, "Burris, they put me in the trial room. They cut me with a sharp instrument and drugged my wounds. They turned me into a monster who lost my humanity, and I killed many people ......"
I grew a little emotional, my voice trembled, and I couldn't stop crying in pain when I got to the end.
Hearing my words, Burris's arms hugged me even harder.
"It's okay, Cheryl, maybe you gave them relief. Besides, it wasn't your fault, I'll make sure the elders give you an apology." Burris softly reassured me, patting my back like he was caring for a child.
I knew what Burris meant. Those blood slaves were marked from birth as blood slaves, and even if they left the manor, they would still be bitten by other vampires.
They don't get to choose the context of their birth and they don't get to choose the manner of their death. They live without dignity despite being human, more like sheep and cattle being sold in the market.
Yet I still found it unbearable that I had become the final butcher's knife to slaughter them.
"No, Burris, I don't need them to apologize to me, they should go to hell and apologize to those who died." I said in a harsh voice.
Burris didn't say anything and seemed to be hesitating. I may have put him in an awkward situation.
"Burris, it's okay. I can do it myself, as long as you don't stop me." I looked up at Burris, water still dripping from my eyelashes.
Burris frowned, clearly still uncertain of his decision.
"Sis, I'll help you." Cecil said, giving Burris a provocative look.
"No, Cecil. you stay out of it, I'll worry about you." I said to Cecil.
I knew Cecil was purposely pissing Burris off, he seemed like the kid who never grew up. I didn't really blame Burris, after all, he wasn't in the same position as me.
"Cheryl, I don't want to stand in your way, but I'd still be worried about you getting hurt. I'll get them to leave the Howard family, is that okay?" Burris negotiated.
"No. You all stay out of this." I said coldly.
Burris wanted to say something else.
Feeling exhausted, I looked at him and pleaded, "Burris, I want to rest first, okay?"
"Okay." Burris sighed.
We made our way back to the manor again. without asking my opinion, Burris carried me back to his bedroom.
Cecil was quiet the whole way and only then did he see Burris about to put me in the coffin before he stepped forward and shouted to stop it, "Burris, what are you doing?!"
"It's a coffin, are you going to smother my sister to death?!" Cecil questioned angrily.
Burris put me in anyway, I didn't have the strength to dissuade them from arguing anymore and simply closed my eyes and pretended to sleep.
"Cheryl doesn't need to breathe, this place will let her rest better." Burris explained in a cold voice.
I felt Burris lie in as well, and Cecil's voice sounded even angrier.
"Damn it, Burris, you better get out of here, I won't allow you to sleep with my sister!"
"I need to heal Cheryl's wounds." Burris' tone changed little.
I bet Cecil was so angry he wanted to hit someone, and thinking about what Burris had said to me earlier about Cecil liking me, I turned to Burris and opened my eyes and said to Cecil, "Cecil, be quiet, okay? I want to get some rest."
Cecil's pale cheeks turned instantly red and he stared at Burris and me in surprise.
Finally, he dropped his head, bit his lip, and compromised, "Okay, I'll stay here and keep watch over you guys."
Cecil's eyes drooped like a wounded critter, and my heart felt a little harder.
"Cecil, maybe you could close the door for us?" Burris said with a smile.
He was referring to the coffin lid. I glared at Burris, a door he could close himself.
But Cecil didn't pick up on his teasing tone and just nodded, disheveled, "I'll keep watch in this room, sister."
"Okay, call me if there's any danger." I said.
Cecil's eyes were still downcast and silent as he pushed the lid on the coffin for us, never looking at me again.
When the coffin lid was completely closed, I looked at the dark crystal overhead and asked Burris, "Burris, am I being too hard on Cecil?"
"I certainly don't feel that way, I'm glad about that, you should have been a long time ago." Burris said with a smile, suddenly slipping his hand into my shirt.
"Oh, what are you doing?!" I almost jumped in shock.
"Sorry Cheryl, I was just trying to treat your wound." Burris immediately brought his hand up and looked at me with an innocent look on his face.
I then remembered that I did have quite a few cuts on my body. If I didn't take my shirt off, Burris would have to put his hand in my shirt.
"Burris, let these wounds heal themselves. I don't want these wounds to transfer to you." I took Burris's hand and put it to my lips and kissed it.
Burris came over and kissed me on the forehead as well.
"Cheryl, I could care less about the others, but I want you to ease the pain, so let me show you?" Burris begged.
I hesitated a little.
"I'm higher ranked than you, the wound will heal quickly." Burris continued to persuade.
"Okay." I agreed to Burris anyway.
I undressed with my back to Burris, the wounds were mainly on my back and extremities.
Burris's palm slowly approached my spine without touching my skin.
A soft white light illuminated the darkness. The pain in my body fades and I feel the soothing hot breeze on the wound.
The fact that Burris was right behind me settled my insides and I was asleep within moments.
When I woke up again, all the wounds on my body had healed. I found my body was clean, even my dirty clothes had been changed.
But Burris wasn't around.
I pushed the lid off the coffin and walked out barefoot. Passing by the mirror, I glanced at it.
Burris had dressed me in a floral dress, the likes of which I'd never worn before, and I looked like a little girl who hadn't grown up yet.
Cecil was still sitting on the couch, and he sat there motionless. I was a little worried and sped up towards him, only to get closer and realize he was just asleep.
Also, the bruises on Cecil were gone, Burris must have done it.
But where had Burris gone?
