Chapter 62.

Burris's POV:
The last second before I lost consciousness, I saw Cheryl's panicked expression.
I desperately tried to keep my eyes open, but the moment the dagger was stabbed into my heart, I was like a machine with the Off button pushed, completely unconscious.
Not even the pain lingered for long, it disappeared along with the consciousness.
I don't know how much time passed before I finally regained consciousness, but I couldn't feel the presence of my body.
It was as if my consciousness existed in a dark chaos and I had completely lost contact with the outside world.
It made me feel very anxious and I was afraid that I would just stay in a coma and never see Cheryl again.
And Dennis was talking about having a wedding with her, which was terrible! I had to wake up soon.
As I was growing desperate, I suddenly heard Amanda calling out. I wanted to respond to her, but I couldn't make any sound, and I had a sweaty feeling of urgency, using all my willpower to make a sound.
"Ah!" With a startled cry, I sat up violently.
Chest still heaving violently, I looked around and realized I was sitting on a desert.
And there was no one here but me.
Somewhat dazed, I stood up, and with that came a wave of dizziness, and I collapsed again on the sand.
At the same time, I felt a strong pang of hunger, which was different from the feeling of craving for blood.
I couldn't help but look down, and the glance surprised me greatly.
I realized I was wearing a tattered sport coat and a pair of poor quality high top leather shoes on my feet, with a backpack on my back.
This was not my style, damn it, what the hell was going on?
"Burris! Hey, where are you?"
Suddenly, a familiar shout came from up ahead, it was Amanda's voice!
There seemed to be a male voice that I had heard before.
Regardless I excitedly got to my feet again and fought through the blackening dizziness and ran towards Amanda.
"Amanda, I'm here!" Upon seeing Amanda, I waved at her and scanned around her.
Disappointingly, Cheryl wasn't with her, and the werewolf I had seen once was next to her.
"Burris? Oh my god, you're really Burris?"
Amanda looked over at the sound of my voice, only to stop dead in her tracks, even slightly in disbelief, at the sight of my face.
"Hey, what's going on?Where's Cheryl? Why are you with this werewolf?" I had to walk over towards Amanda, while giving the werewolf an unkind look in my eyes.
The werewolf's eyes seemed a little surprised as well, but the surprise turned to anger as he received my glare.
He lunged at me, raising his fist at the same time. I tried to teleport out of the range of his attack, but my body was not controlled at all, and I was surprised that I only managed to take a step back.
Damn, what's going on here?!
"No, Mr. Werewolf, calm down, Burris is a human now."
At the crucial moment, Amanda stepped in front of me, but I couldn't quite understand her words.
The brash werewolf put away his fists, gave me a stern look and cursed, "If it wasn't for him, the bastard, Cheryl wouldn't have married that blood-sucking monster and he turned human!"
"Wait, Amanda, what's he talking about? Who turned human?" I felt like my head was full of questions right now.
Amanda turned her head and frowned at me, taking a long breath before nervously saying, "Burris, things might be a little more than you expected right now. But you must be calm, right now the most important thing we can do is get to Cheryl."
"Hmph, with the way he looks now he still wants to go save Cheryl? I'm afraid he's going to add to that pack of monsters." The werewolf said sarcastically from the sidelines.
"Oh! Mr. Werewolf, can't you just put aside your prejudice against Burris for a moment? I'm really going to get mad at you, you're acting childish like a child with this behavior." Amanda turned around and angrily rebuked him, her childish voice without much authority.
But surprisingly, the werewolf actually quieted down and walked away to the side, skimming his head
I didn't have the heart to think about the reason for the werewolf's change in attitude right now though, a whole lot of questions were clogging up my head and I had to get them out of the way.
I stared intently at Amanda and asked, "Amanda, what was the situation you were talking about?"
Amanda gave the werewolf a look and pulled out a mirror and handed it to me, "Burris, get familiar with what you look like first."
"What?" I took the mirror in her hand blankly.
"Lift it up and look at it." Amanda urged.
I had to lift the mirror and point it at my face.
Then, I saw a completely unfamiliar face in it!
My eyes snapped open and I held the mirror close to my face, so close that I could only see my eyes.
It wasn't the familiar golden pupils I had, but a pair of green eyes.
I held the mirror farther away again and didn't see the familiar short blonde hair either, only the light brown curls tied to the back of my head.
"Oh my God Amanda, is there nothing wrong with your mirror ......" I tried to make all sorts of funny faces as the mirror moved in sync.
"There's nothing wrong with the mirror." Amanda answered me.
She frowned at me and apologized, "Burris, I'm sorry that this is the only way to save you."
"Amanda, why are you apologizing? It wasn't easy to save him, and it turned him from a monster to a human, he should be grateful to us for that, it's what he deserves as a man." Duster still couldn't seem to resist taunting me.
I was in a very confused state of mind right now, and a surge of fire went straight up at the tone of his voice.
I lunged at him with my fist raised and yelled, "Hell, will you shut the fuck up? You fucking beast!"
This was the kind of reckless thing I would never have done before, but now I was as impulsive and irritable as a brat.
"Come on Burris, thanks to Duster I was able to save you, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to get the Book of the Dead alone." Amanda stopped me.
She stepped between us, looking slightly distressed.
"Amanda, just let him come over here, let him taste how hard a werewolf's fist is and see if his little human body can hold up!" Duster glared at me defiantly.
"I can finally understand Cheryl's pain, even if she's not here right now." Amanda muttered in a low voice.
With Amanda stopping me like that, I finally calmed down.
I stopped looking at Duster and turned to Amanda and asked, "Amanda, are you saying that you saved me through the method in the Book of the Dead and that's why I became human?"
"Yes." Amanda nodded and explained, "We're still in the Aysa Desert, having just run away from the underground palace. I used the magic from above to save you in a hurry because you were really close to not being able to hold on."
"What about my body? Is there still a way to recover?" I still had a glimmer of hope.
Amanda pursed her lips and shook her head, a gesture that dashed my hopes.
"This magic can place your soul in a nearby corpse that just died while your original body turns to ash, it's irreversible magic." Amanda explained in a low voice.
I was completely dumbfounded, my heart was choking hard.
"Come on Burris, you're pretty handsome even with this face now." Amanda reassured me clumsily.
But what was the point of being handsome? How am I going to save Cheryl?
Once Cheryl is rescued, in what capacity will I be there for her?
