Chapter 106: Sunday

*Ohana means family. Family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten. – Lilo and Stitch*

Early Sunday morning, JD woke up to what seemed like a strange sound. Confused over the sound, he sat up and turned on the bedside lamp. Looking over, he saw Dean lying on her side with her hands over her mouth.

Giggling.

“Dean?”

“I’m okay, I promise.” She said, smiling up at him. “O took my keys away, afraid that I might run away.”

JD nodded in agreement. Reese had been scared that she would run away. Or lock herself in the garage with a running car. Looking at the smiling girl who had not smiled in days, and certainly had not laughed or giggled, he understood the fear.

“Will you take me to the store?”

“Now?” He glanced at the bedside clock that read three twenty. Twenty-one. “I guess.”

Dean gave a small squeal before she kissed him and hopped out of bed. She dashed down the hall to her own room. Monster looked at the door and then at JD.

“I don’t know, man.” JD admitted and got out of bed himself. He took care of his bathroom business and then dressed in jeans and a gray Henley shirt. He was putting his shoes on when Dean came back into the room in jeans and a green t-shirt with Grandpa from the Munsters

“Go to your room.” She told Monster and he looked at JD with sad eyes.

“Sorry, buddy. We won’t be gone long.” He promised the dog and gave him a little scratch on the head.

Slowly, the dog got off the bed and went down the hall to his room. Dean followed him to make sure the gate and door got closed. JD sent a message to his mom and Reese. As soon as they went out the door, Reese would receive a notification that they had left. To prevent either of them from panicking, he let them know what was going on.

*Dean wants to go to the store. Will let you know when we’re back.*

They took his little pickup and Dean spent most of the time looking at pictures on her phone. He wasn’t sure if they were on social media or her picture gallery. He was just glad that she was smiling.

Not that he blamed her for crying. He remembered how he and Jaxon were when Jolene had been in the hospital. The thought of losing their sister was incomprehensible. He could not even imagine what they would have been like if it had been Helen.

The simple thought of it still choked him up and filled his eyes with tears.

He turned into the Walmart parking lot that, unsurprisingly, was quite empty. Parking at the first empty spot between a handicapped spot and a cart corral, he looked at Dean.

“Now what?”

By the time they checked out, they had three bags of flour, nine canisters of glitter, over a thousand yards of fishing line and a few boxes of thumbtacks.

Grateful for the twenty-four-hour drive thru, they got coffee and breakfast from McDonalds. Once they were back at the house, JD sent another message. There was a light glow from deep inside the smaller house and the quick response told him that Reese was awake.

After they finished their breakfast, Dean showed him how to make a flour and glitter balloon bomb. They finished the last one just before the big clock upstairs chimed seven. They cleaned up their mess and then rigged bombs at various places around the house.

Just before eight, they snuggled up together on the living room couch.

“Do you always have water balloons in the house?” JD asked as Dean searched for something to watch.

“Do you know how hard they are to get in the winter?” she asked as she settled on one of the Scream movies.

“Would she get you with the bombs?”

“All the time.” Dean chuckled. “I came home with friends one day. We were in seventh, eighth grade, and one of my friends, Ivy, was, and still is, high maintenance. Mom always says that she needs a triad of men to be able to keep up with her maintenance.”

“That bad?”

With a little laugh, Dean nodded. “She tried to skip school one day because she was having a bad hair day.”

“Damn.”

“Yeah. We came through the back door, and Ivy happened to trigger the trap. Flour and glitter went everywhere. She started crying and demanded that her mom come and get her.” Dean snuggled in against JD’s side and tucked her feet up against her bottom.

Having been allowed on the bed, Monster decided to try the couch and slowly climbed up. Dean and JD both turned to look at him as he sat down and refused to look at them. He carefully laid down, facing away from the two teens.

“Seriously?” Dean asked and Monster gave her a deep sigh.

“Your dog has an attitude.” JD said scratching the dog’s rump with the hand that was around Dean.

“He does. He is a Monster.” She agreed and stroked her hand along his back.

“What happened with Ivy?” JD asked.

“Huh?” She turned back to him. “Oh! Yeah, her parents took advantage of her being over here and went on a date. Her mom talked to mine and made sure that Ivy wasn’t hurt, no serious damage was done and nothing that a shower couldn’t fix. Then she told Ivy that they would pick her up in the morning.”

JD laughed as he pictured it in his head.

“Ivy was so pissed and has refused to step foot in the house ever since.” Dean covered a yawn and laid her head on his chest.

JD grabbed the large light weight blanket off the back of the couch and covered them both up with it. Morticia and Wednesday Addams in matching outfits. It was a custom blanket with Dean and Mary’s faces on it.

The only color on the black and white blanket was the red writing at the bottom. Reading the words, he kissed Dean on the head and hoped that she would keep those words close to her heart.

*I love you more than all the bats in all the caves of the world.*

With Ghost Face terrorizing the citizens of Woodsboro, and Monster snoring lightly, they both slipped off to sleep.

“Damn it all to hell!” Gina swore as she stood at the glass door in the hallway. Flour and red and blue glitter covered her. And her county uniform.

Dean and JD both jumped at the loud disturbance. Then Dean began to laugh when she realized who was the first victim. JD chuckled, trying to hide his smile. Gina walked into the living room and stopped in front of the couch.

“It’s a good thing that I’m getting off shift.” She told her laughing niece. “I’m taking a shower in your room. Might want to clean up the mess if you want to get another victim.”

“Okay.” Dean said with a giant smile.

“At least I’m patriotic.” Gina grumbled as she went down the hall to Dean’s room.

Dean got up and retrieved the broom from the small hidden closet.

“You just opened the wall!” JD said walking over to the still open door.

“You didn’t know about that?” Dean asked as she began to sweep the hall.

“No.” he said pushing the slide out cubby closed. The box trim of the wall made the door disappear when closed. “Are there others?”

“Yeah.” Dean laughed at him. “There’s even a safe room and an escape tunnel.”

“Your uncle is a bit crazy.” JD grinned.

“He is. But he didn’t build it. An eccentric millionaire built it.” Dean explained, dumping the dust pan into the trashcan. “He was scared that someone would try to kidnap his family to get to him. He built this house for himself and the other one for his grown daughter. She refused to move into it, said that he was crazy and needed to get over his delusions.”

“What happened?”

“Story says that he double crossed the mafia, and they killed him. But let’s be honest, the Mafia in Morgan City?"

“DEAN!” Reese called from the kitchen door where he was covered in flour and green glitter.

Monster ran over to Helen who had barely missed being covered. Bumping Reese with his excited rump, both dog and woman ended up getting covered. JD couldn’t help but laugh as his confused mother tried to figure out what was going on.

Dean lifted the collar of her t-shirt to hide her smile. The mischief and happy memories dancing in her eyes could not be hidden.

“You got one for Neo?” Reese finally asked with a grin and the teen nodded.
