Chapter 129: Alert
*Fear is a reaction. Courage is a decision. – Gina Rodriguez*
Jolene had a late afternoon class and study group afterwards. Neo refused to make her give up her social life even though he would rather have her at home with him. But she was finding herself, and that was more important than what he wanted.
And what Neo wanted was Jolene.
He knew it deep inside him. And he knew that those who knew him well, knew it too. Maybe even those who didn't know him well.
Neo did not care.
It had been a long time since he wanted something as much as he wanted Jolene. His Jo. He noticed that when he called her a pet name, she blushed and got embarrassed. So, he shortened her name and now she was just Jo. The few times that JD had called her Jo, she corrected him. She never corrected Neo.
Neo sat in his office, Shelby had already left for the evening, and he would be leaving soon. Maybe he would go meet his Jo at the college and take her to dinner. The more he thought about that, the more it sounded like a good idea. In fact, a great idea.
He shut down his computer and grabbed his phone and keys, tucking his jacket and helmet under his arm. Turning out the lights, he set the alarm and locked up the building. If anyone called in at this point, the call would go to the office in the Cooper Stone Building. At the end of next month, the offices will be moving into the house.
The only office personnel that will remain in the warehouse would be Shelby. She had the option to move into the big house also. But she liked the warehouse and would be the last to move into the new facilities. He wasn’t sure what he was going to do with the warehouse just yet, but he would figure it out.
Maybe he would turn into a gym. Not like Golden Iron. More like a strongman or cross fit. Several of the guys liked that type of work out and the more Neo looked into it, the more benefits he saw. If you wanted muscles and bulk, like Reese, a traditional gym was good. But if you wanted useful muscles, like himself, the nontraditional gym was better.
After placing the phone in its holder, he pulled on his jacket and helmet before straddling the bike. The engine roared to like under him, and he pulled out of his parking spot. He was considering where to take Jolene for dinner when there was a bright flash in front of him as a loud alarm filled his ear through the helmet speakers.
JOLENE 911
The alarm flashed on his phone screen. Barely looking down, he pressed the button to pull up the map. It showed her in the parking lot at the school. His fingers moved expertly over the phone and soon enough, he heard his friend in his ear.
“Reese.”
“Where’s your woman?”
“Yes, we’re home.” Reese said and Neo knew that the other man could hear the strain in his voice.
“Jo’s alarm is going off.” He said speeding up and sliding between two rows of cars.
“The alarm was triggered?”
“She had to activate it.” Neo explained, not certain if Reese had forgotten or simply trying to keep Helen from worrying.
“Let me go to the office and I’ll see what’s on the system.” Reese said and through the speakers in the helmet, Neo heard him moving around.
Neo took a sharp right and saw that the dot indicating where Jolene was, was now moving. Luckily, it was moving towards him.
“Tell me what you know.”
“Nothing yet.” Neo admitted glancing at his phone as he took a curve and approached the college. “Where’s the Tesla?”
“Hang on.” The sound of the keyboard filled the helmet and Neo slowed down. “Says that it’s running, fob is nearby but not in it and… weird. It’s showing two low tires.”
“Alarm has her on the move. Call Shelby and have her send guards out.”
“Like hell.” Reese growled.
“Reese. Don’t worry your woman.” Neo growled back as a white van came into view. He pulled off to the side and watched as the dot approached him and then passed him. Just as the white van did. “Fucking idiots.”
“What?”
“Send the guards.” Neo ordered as he pulled back out onto the road and did a U-turn to follow the van. “If Helen asks, Jolene has a flat.”
“Neo.” Reese warned.
“I’m following her necklace.” Neo explained as he ended the call and then connected to Zack and Childs. “Jo’s alarm has been activated.”
“Pulling it up.” Childs said as Zack was talking to someone.
Both men confirmed that they had the alarm activated on their IGYS app and were in route. Almost as soon as the group call ended, Shelby’s ringtone was in Neo’s ear. He clicked the button to connect to her.
“What do you need me to do?”
“Call the sheriff’s’ department. Let them know that I’m in pursuit.”
“Stay on the line.” She ordered.
“Where’s Nate?” Neo asked as the van took a left and he followed.
“Next door watching hockey.” She replied as her work phone rang on speakerphone.
“Sheriff’s department.”
“This is Shelby Wright with IGYS Security. Our guards are responding to a personal mobile alarm.”
“Possible kidnapping, I’m in pursuit.” Neo said as the van turned again.
“It is a possible kidnapping of a high-profile client. Charles Neosho is leading the pursuit with additional guards staging for response.”
The dispatcher began asking questions and Shelby was answering them faster than Neo could. She gave a description of the van and the license plate number. Neo could only smirk knowing that she had his camera streaming on her computer along with the tracking map.
Childs called in on the open radio line with codes declaring that he was joining the pursuit. If it was anyone else, Neo would have let him take over and would have backed off. But it wasn’t just anyone in that van. That was his baby. His Jo.
Shelby relayed the information that a second guard was now in pursuit and then an SUV with flashing lights came into view. The van sped up to evade the deputy, but Zack pulled the armored truck out into the intersection ahead of the van.
The intersection of the two two lane roads was not that big, and Zack stopped at an angle, blocking the van’s path. The way he was stopped, the only way that the van could go, would be to turn right. And that would force them into the back lot of the local K9 breeders training facility.
The van began skidding to a stop and Neo feared that it would roll over. Another sheriff’s SUV flew around his bike as he also pulled off to the side.
“Tell your deputies to put on their sunglasses.” Shelby told the dispatcher and Neo grinned. He saw the deputy ahead of him put on her sunglasses as she stood between the door and her SUV. A moment later, the side of the armored truck lit up with bright white lights.
The female deputy moved closer to the van, her pistol in her holster and her shotgun in her hands. That simple action confirmed that it was Tru. The woman loved her shotgun.
She jerked open the driver’s side door and yanked the driver out. The other deputy opened the back door and ordered someone out.
Once the two men were secured in the respective patrol vehicles, Tru approached Neo. “There’s a man in the back with Jolene. They both look like they’ve been drugged. Either of your men medics?”
“Childs was a field medic.”
“Excellent.” Tru walked away from the bike and towards the IGYS vehicle as she spoke into her shoulder mike.
“Shell, call Reese. Looks like Jo is going back to the hospital.” Neo advised, wanting to go to his Jo, but not wanting to piss off Tru.
The woman really loved her shotgun.
