Chapter 96: Coffee and Cookies

*It’s not what we have in life, but who we have in our life that matters. – J. M. Laurence*

Ty showed his driver’s license and official FD credentials. The secretary gave him a strange look and he just smiled at her. He knew the look. He got it a lot when he was holding hands with his wife. Sometimes at the club, they got looks when he was with Jaxon.

Even this day and age, people thought that he should date a woman “like” him. His response to that was usually pointing out that he had a boyfriend. And a wife. Yeah, he was the three B’s. Big, black and bi.

“She is my sister-in-law.” He decided that was a much easier explanation than telling the whole truth.

She’s the niece of the man that mine and my wife’s lover’s mother is dating and she’s also dating my lover’s younger brother. And my wife is pregnant. It might be mine. It might also be his. Either way, the baby was going to be spoiled.

Thankfully, Dean came into the office before anything else could be said. The teen headed straight to him and hugged him. He noticed that she kept an eye on the secretary and after the hug, kept her arm around his waist.

“This is your brother-in-law?” the stern woman asked.

“That’s simplifying it, but yeah. His mother-in-law is engaged to my uncle who has custody of me, you know, because my mom’s not around. Isn’t that what you were telling everyone? She was a deadbeat parent.”

Ty felt like he was trapped in a bad situation that could go bad with just a little spark. And obviously. Dean and this woman did not get along. The woman muttered something under her breath, and he was glad that he didn’t catch what she had said.

Dean gave her a smile. “What’s the problem? You don’t like the hot chocolate picking up a little marshmallow?”

“Dean.” Ty admonished, trying not to laugh.

“I just need to make sure -.”

“Mr. Kelso!” Dean called to the man entering the room through the back door. At the name of Kelso, the woman paled and plastered on a tight smile.

“Hey, Dean. Is this Ty?” the man asked approaching them.

“Yes, sir.” Ty held out a hand over the shallow counter. “Tyrus Johnson.”

“Charles Kelso, I’m the principal here.” he said shaking Ty’s hand. “Nice to meet you. Let us know if you need anything.” Mr. Kelso said before he let go of the hand and walked away.

Dean gave a snarky grin to the woman and then took Ty’s hand and lead them out of the office.

“What was that about?” Ty asked as they walked out of the school and approached his car in the visitor parking lot.

“She’s a racist bitch and I don’t like her. It’s mutual. Don’t tell Helen that I said bitch.”

“I won’t.” Ty laughed.

“Anyway, she always gives mom hell for being a single mom.” Dean explained as Ty unlocked the car, and she slid in. “What are we doing about my car?”

“I have no idea.” Ty admitted as he started the engine. “I was just told to come get you.”

“And you didn’t question Miss Helen.”

“Hell no.”

They both laughed as they headed down the little road in front of the school.

“Thirsty?” He asked, turning onto the main road through town.

“A little.”

“Coffee or soda?”

“Coffee.” She answered as if it was a stupid question. “So, what’s going on?”

“I was priming the nursery walls.”

“That’s cool. You still want a woodsy theme?”

“Yeah.” He turned a corner and then pulled into the Starbucks drive through. “It can go either way. Mystical fairy woods for a girl. Masculine hunting lodge for a boy.”

“There’s boy fairies, too.” Dean pointed out. “Hot peppermint white mocha extra shot.”

“Got it.” He rolled down the window and placed the order. He added a couple of cookies to the order and Dean squealed.

“Right now, you’re my favorite fake brother-in-law.”

“Keep that in mind.” He grinned at her as he got out his wallet. “Especially next time you’re making out with JD.”

“That’s so wrong!” She laughed as he paid the clerk and then accepted the drinks and cookies.

“He’s a little young for my taste, but his brother is fabulous.”

She laughed. “You say that so wrong. Since you’re gay you are required to say it as faaaaab-you-loooouuusss.”

“Four snaps in Z formation?” he asked as he did the motions.

“What?” Dean asked as she laughed at him.

“Sorry, I guess that’s a little before your time.” He laughed. “You should check out *In Living Color* for reference.”

“Ooooo-kaaaay.” She said pulling out her phone and searching it up. She streamed a few skits from the show and was rolling with laughter.

He turned down the road that the two houses were on as it pulled up on her phone.

“This is great!” She asked. “In fact, it’s faaaab-you-looousss!”

“Yeah, I think so.” Ty smiled at her. “My parents later swore up and down that it was shows like that that made me turn bi.”

“Yeah, the little hat totally does it.” Dean rolled her eyes. “Way more than Jaxon’s ass.”

“He does have a nice ass.” Ty agreed as he pulled into the driveway and saw the other vehicles in the driveway. “Even in sweatpants, and do you know how hard that is to pull off?”

“Yeah. JD has a nice ass, but in sweats, he loses it.”

“Wheredago Ass Syndrome.” Ty said as he parked. “I suffer from that myself.”

Laughing, Dean gathered up her belongings. “I gotta remember that! What do you think is going on?”

“I have no idea. Whose Tesla is that?” he asked, getting out.

“Technically, it’s Uncle O’s but he doesn’t like it. It doesn’t purr or growl even with the sound package.”

“I didn’t know he even had one.”

“It’s too quiet for him.” She rolled her eyes. “Everything has to be loud.”

“Everything?”

“Yes, Helen is included in that. Just ask JD.”

“Uh, no thanks.”

“Yeah. Anyway, I think he gave it to Jolene to drive once she can drive again.” She said as they went into the smaller house and saw everyone waiting in the living room. Everyone except Reese. “Where’s O?”

“He’s in the shower, he’ll be out in just a minute.” Helen said, coming out of the office with a bottle of whiskey.

“I’m here, princess.” Reese said coming down the opposite hall.

She looked at him and a sense of dread filled her. His eyes looked like he had been crying. His voice was rougher than usual and tinged with sadness.

Something was wrong. Very wrong.
