Chapter 42: Broken

*Don’t wait. The time will never be just right. – Napoleon Hill*

Something was wrong. JD knew it, he just didn’t know what. Saturday after he got home from the movies with Dean, his mom was home. Sunday she said that she didn’t feel good and asked to skip family dinner.

Jolene and Hank wouldn’t be there either, but that was becoming more and more common. He was working for a promotion. She was finishing up her classes and trying to secure a student teaching position.

JD went but worried about Helen the whole time. Reese and Dean didn’t come either. So he texted her and she replied with IDK. No one seemed to know.

And the two that did, weren’t talking.

Monday, when he got home from swim practice, his mom was sitting on the couch watching a movie. When he asked if she was going on her date, she simply said no.

“Are you going next week?”

“I don’t know.” Had been her quiet response.

About the same time, Dean texted him and it was his turn to say the three words. I don't know. He was just as confused.

Tuesday night, he came home to find her sitting on the couch crying over her favorite ice cream. Unopened and spoon on the floor where it had fallen. He put the ice cream up and held her until she cried herself to sleep.

JD covered her up and brought a charger in for her phone. Turning off the lights and locking the door he went to his room and called Dean.

“What the fuck is going on?” Dean asked.

“I have no idea. Mom wasn’t even this upset when Bob left.”

“You call your dad by his name?”

JD scoffed. “If you saw how he acted, and finding out that he cheated their entire marriage, his name is better than what I want to call him.”

“Fucking asshole.”

“That’s closer.” He chuckled. “You talked to your uncle?”

“No. I’m pretty sure he’s avoiding me. Actually, I think he’s avoiding everyone.” She sighed. “I wish I knew what happened. Think he got a little too rough with sex?”

“No. Don’t think that they ever had sex.”

“What? You’re fucking shitting me.”

“You have a potty mouth when your uncle’s not around.” He said with a dry chuckle.

“No, shit. Why the hell do you think they’re not fucking?”

JD laughed. “My mom blushes at the mere mention of sex. And, I hate to admit that I know this, my mom has not had sex since before I was born. Bob told me that once he had a second ‘legitimate’ son, he no longer had to touch her.”

“Holy fucking shit. What an asshole.”

“That’s my dear old dad. Forget world’s best dad. I nominate him for world’s worst asshole.”

“And you say I have a potty mouth.” She chuckled. “Hey, can you skip practice tomorrow? And come over here after school?”

“Yeah. I’ll text coach and let her know something came up.”

“OK. I need to text mine and I need to talk to one of my aunts.”

“Hey, Dean?”

“Yeah?”

“Would it be weird if I asked you out?”

“We go out all the time.”

“I mean, pick you up, go out to eat, see a movie and walk you to the door and maybe kiss you good night.”

There was silence from the other end of the line. JD mentally kicked himself.

“Thanksgiving weekend is good for me.”

He fell back on his twin sized bed and smiled at the ceiling. “That’s good for me too.”
