Chapter 141: Prom

*Cinderella never asked for a prince. She asked for a night off and a dress. – Kiera Cass*
Her muscles burned and her lungs ached, but Dean refused to stop. She had let herself go while she was at home. Midnight swims did not have the same appeal without her mom or Cheryl. Laps were not as soothing as they had been.
She was determined to get back into shape. Back down to her time.
Her legs kicked and her arms swung out in strong strokes pulling her forward. Every other left stroke she breathed in and on the ones in between she breathed out. At the end of the lane, she flipped and kicked off the wall and began her final lap.
The wall grew closer and closer, and she knew she would make it close to her time. With her hand hitting the wall, she came up for a long and deep breath. Planting her feet under her, Dean took off her goggles and swim cap to look at the large timer by the side of the pool.
Fourteen seconds over.
“Looking good, Coppell!” the coach called, and Dean turned to look at where she stood.
Standing at the end of the of the pool, in front of her lane was JD. He wore his practice trunks that were skintight and down to his knees. He was holding a posterboard in front of him. The white poster had a pool at the bottom with a diving board on one end.
*Will you dive into prom with me?*
“You prick.” She smiled.
“You told me to ask.”
“Not like this.”
“Fine, I’ll ask again later.”
Laughing, Dean pulled herself out of the pool and hugged him. “Yes.”
“And you’ll wear those killer heels?” JD asked as he leaned down to kiss her and she rolled her eyes at him.
When they had gotten home from practice, Reese and Helen were waiting for them in the big house. They sat on the couch with her feet in his lap as he rubbed them. Since the announcement of twins, Reese had been even more attentive. Especially since Helen was now on bed rest.
Modified bed rest.
She spent a lot of time on the couch and in a recliner. But that Saturday, she went with Dean to find a dress to go with her killer heels. At the third store, they found a black chiffon dress that had a rainbow ombre A-line floor length skirt. The bodice was a sweetheart cut and backless with a rhinestone and mesh overlay with a mandarin collar.
After a morning getting her nails done and an afternoon at the day spa, Dean decided that she would never look this beautiful ever again. She did not even think that she could look this pretty on her wedding day.
Her hair was done in artful rosettes with crystal beaded pins holding her tresses in place. Diamond teardrop earrings graced her ears, and her silver heart bracelet was around her right wrist. Walking out of her room, she was glad that Monster was obsessed with Helen. Dog hair would be a royal pain to get off the dress.
JD stood in the kitchen with a black tux and stark white shirt. The bowtie was a custom black with rainbow ombre. She walked towards him, and he couldn’t take his eyes off her.
“Breath, son.” Reese suggested quietly and JD took a deep breath. “There you go.”
“I uh… I uh…” JD was certain that along with all his blood, all his brain cells had also just gone to his dick.
“Breath.” Reese chuckled.
“Right.” JD said and did a breathing exercise. “I got you a flower for your wrist.”
Helen tried so hard not to bust out laughing at her son. But this was too good.
“I mean, I got you a corset.” JD blushed.
Helen swiped at her cheeks where tears were flowing as she laughed.
“Damn, boy.” Reese shook his head as Dean gave a small laugh at her very nervous date. “Corsage. It’s called a corsage. You can get her a corset later.”
“I’ll take my wrist flower.” Dean smiled at JD.
“Uh-huh.” JD agreed as he continued to stare at Dean.
Reese smacked him on the back of his head and placed the clear plastic box in the boys’ hands. Walking over to Helen, he declared, “You’re right, we should have filmed this.”
“Told you.” Helen said as she got a kiss from him as he got her phone.
“Put the flower on her wrist so we can get some pictures.” Reese smirked as JD looked at the box in his hands.
“Right.” He said as he removed the wrist corsage and slipped it onto Dean’s wrist.
Reese placed the two teens in front of the elaborate fireplace and took several pictures with all the different phones. He made sure that JD had money for pictures at the hotel. Then he ushered them out to the sleek town car that was waiting for them.
They rode to their dinner reservation in a nervous silence. JD had told Reese that he wanted to do something different from Pier and Beam. He wanted to make it special. With everything else that was going on, the opening of the observatory for private dinners was postponed. When JD asked for something special, Reese knew who would be the first to have a private dinner.
The car pulled up to the side of the club and the driver opened the door for them. Nichols opened the side door to the observatory for them and guided them over to the elevator. They went to the round and then followed it around to the small hallway to the observatory.
The table for two was set with a uniformed woman waiting to fill their drinks. The menu was set by the chef and the waitstaff brought out the first course. It did not take long for the odd nervousness to dissipate, and they were both back to talking normally.
After the meal, they took turns looking through the telescope and trying to identify different stars. By the time that they arrived at the hotel, Dean did not think that the night could be any better.
The rest of the team was already there, and Dean pulled her phone out of her small clutch and showed the other girls the pictures of their dinner.
“I am so damned jealous.” Elizabeth admitted as she elbowed Craig in his ribs.
“Sorry.” Craig grumbled to her and then glared at JD. “You’re making the rest of us look like shit.”
“Trust me boys,” one of the other dates teased, “you usually do that on your own.”
