Chapter 181: Push Ups
*US Navy Seabees – We build, we fight.*
“That son of a bitch!” The chief muttered with a grin as he looked past the sailors that were cleaning the equipment parked in the large hangar. He gave a small shake of his head as a rare smile crossed his face. “Owen Reese! You sorry fucker! What the hell are you doing here?”
Reese laughed as he approached Chief Pollard with an arm lightly slung around Dean’s shoulders. “You salty old bastard, they haven’t kicked you out yet?”
“They did, but then they realized that I knew everything and brought me back.” The gray-haired man replied as they shook hands. “This cannot be little Denise.”
“Hi, Chief.” She smiled at him as she discreetly looked past him, and her eyes landed on JD.
“Damn, girl.” He pulled her in for a hug and she accepted it from the man who she only vaguely remembered. “I’m sorry about your momma.”
“Thanks.” She whispered and blinked back tears as he let her go.
“So, Chief,” Reese said as he turned them so that their backs were both to the men that were not so discreetly checking out Dean, “I’m going to need you to face this direction for a few minutes and ignore anything behind you for the next two-“
“Three.” Dean coughed into her hand.
“-sorry, three minutes.”
“I’ll give you two and a half.” The chief said as he grinned at Dean over his shoulder. “And he better be able to finish his shift afterwards.”
“Aye, aye, Chief.” She grinned back as he turned away from her. As soon as the two men were facing away from her, she turned and sprinted over to JD.
Her arms went around his neck as his went around her waist and his mouth crashed onto hers. He bit her lower lip and forced his tongue into her mouth. Moaning into his mouth, she pressed even closer to him. They only came up for air when called out a two-minute warning.
“You know Chief?” he asked quietly.
“O told you that they served together.” She smiled back.
“I didn’t think that you knew him.”
She shook her head. “Not really. I think I may have met him twice. Maybe three times. He still calls me Denise.”
“Hmmm… have you seen the house?”
“Not yet. They took the babies to get settled and O brought me here.”
“One minute. Thrust, thrust, boom, sailor.” Chief called out.
“Sorry, Chief,” Dean called back with a grin. “He’s a Navy Seabee, he’s more thorough than an Army Minute-Man.”
There were some laughs and catcalls from around them as the two old friends laughed.
“Just for that, I will give you your full three minutes.”
“But he has that ‘can do’ attitude. I was thinking a twenty-four-hour liberty pass.”
“Dean.” Reese warned with very little heat in his voice as he tried not to laugh.
“Little girl, you’re going to get your man a soap party if you’re not careful.”
“I doubt that.” Dean gave JD a quick kiss and then pulled out her phone from her back pocket. “I am supposed to get cookie requests so me and his mom can make cookies for you guys.”
“Damn, Reese.” Chief Pollard laughed. “How do you find these women?”
“I don’t look for my wives at the strip club.” Reese laughed.
“Just the BDSM club.” Dean replied as she was typing on her phone and the group around her fell silent.
“Don’t knock it till you try it, princess.” Reese called back and she froze as all color drained from her face.
“Did I say that out loud?” Dean squeaked and JD nodded as he laughed.
“You did. Not a thought I want of my mom.”
“Have you met my uncle?” Dean teased as she went back to entering the cookie requests.
“I have.” JD replied dryly as the other two men walked over to where the group was huddled around the couple. “Him and all of his piercings, and no, I do not want to know how much my mom enjoys your piercings.”
“Enough to get triplets.” Dean shrugged.
“Did you forget to turn your filter on this morning? Or your brain?” Reese asked with a laugh.
“Both?” she offered.
“Denise, -“
“Dean.” She corrected gently as she entered the last cookie request and sent the text to Helen. Dean knew that Helen would reply with a grocery list of everything that they would need. “Everyone calls me Dean now. I haven’t gone by Denise since I was ten or eleven.”
Chief looked at her with confusion before he gave in and asked his question. “I don’t think I’m doing my math right. How old are you?”
Instead of answering she turned her phone back on and pulled up her search bar. After a quick search she closed her phone and placed it in her back pocket,
“And?” JD asked with a grin.
“I know you’re not so old that you don’t remember how old you are.” Chief laughed.
“Thirty-six seems to be the standard. Although Mississippi age of consent is sixteen.” She said and grinned at her uncle’s friend who looked even more confused.
His confusion only grew with JD’s question. “Mom talk to you about what I want for Christmas?”
“She did, but there’s someone else you need to talk to about what you want.” Reese replied.
“Not a conversation I wanted to have over the phone, through text or email.” JD admitted as the door on the far side of the hangar.
One of the other members of his crew called the room to attention as Captain Harlow approached them.
“As you were.” He rumbled. “Reese, you sorry sack of shit!”
“Sorry, sir.” JD said and was not quite certain what he had done.
Harlow looked at JD with a scowl and then he smiled warmly at Dean. “Dean, honey.” He pulled her in for a hug and she gave into the tears that had threatened earlier. “You go on and cry, little one. And when you’re done, we’ll go back to my office, find you a fake ID and go burn the bar.”
“How young is she?” one of the guys asked and JD sighed.
Chief cocked an eyebrow as JD dropped to the deck and assumed the push up position. “How many pushups have you done over her?”
“There’s 768 days between her birthday and mine, Chief.” JD answered. “Just over twenty-five months.”
“And can you do 768 pushups?”
“Yes, Chief.” JD replied and began doing pushups as he counted them out.
“Reminds me of someone else.” Harlow grinned over Dean’s head at her uncle.
“I never had to do pushups because of Heather.” Reese grinned.
“I do remember you having to do pushups after using tie straps for purposes not intended.” Chief laughed.
“You should have used one as a gag.” Harlow shook his head.
“Finally, a sex story that doesn’t involve my boyfriends’ mother.” Dean murmured as she stepped back. “Sorry, Har.”
“Don’t ever apologize for missing your mom.” The captain said brushing tears off her cheeks. “Mary was a hell of a woman. Why don’t we leave your man to do his pushups and we’ll go find us some whiskey. And then we can talk about some of the shit she did when we were in Africa.”
Dean laughed. “I don’t know where she got all that bullion from.”
“Oh, shit. *That* was Mary? I knew she did the glitter bombs. Just outside the damned showers.”
“Sparkliest field hospital the Seabees ever built.” Dean laughed as she remembered the stories that her mom told her after she got home from a stint due to the Ebola outbreak in Guinea.
“And not because it was clean.” Harlow laughed. “It’s probably a good thing we didn’t have the two of them together at the time. Come on, I have a bottle of whiskey with your mom’s name on it.”
“In your office?” Reese asked with a grin.
“Nope, officers club. Chief, don’t make the boy do too many pushups. I’m sure she has plans for him later.” Harlow tossed an arm around Dean’s shoulders and started walking her towards the door.
“Reese, how old is she?” Pollard asked as they walked away.
“Seventeen.” Both men with the last name Reese answered as one followed his niece and the other continued to count out pushups.
“Damn it, boy, keep pushing.”
