Chapter 39: Election Day

*A hero is someone who understands that responsibility comes with his freedom. – Bob Dylan*

JD had mentioned that he had a school assignment to write a paper about the American elections process. One of the requirements was to interview someone involved in an election. Reese told him that he knew the undersheriff who was running for sheriff.

After a quick phone call, the whole family was invited to the election night watch party.

JD walked into the hotel ballroom with Helen, both unsure of what to expect. They were immediately stopped by a young woman with a clipboard who after checking their names off the list, put name badges on them.

“Awesome!” Dean said rushing over to them. “Uncle Owen said that you were coming.”

Helen hugged the girl and noticed that she hugged JD also. JD was not a hugger. But he hugged her back and then kept his arm around her shoulders.

“Where is your uncle?” Helen asked.

“He’s not here yet. He’s over at Pier and Beam, they’re catering tonight.”

JD started laughing. “I have a funny story to tell you.”

“I like funny stories.” Dean said leading him over to a table.

“Helen?”

She turned to see Michelle smiling at her. “Hi.”

“Are you here with Owen?” Michelle asked guiding her back to the table she had just been at.

“My son JD, actually. But Reese arranged for us to come.” She replied sitting down in an empty chair.

“Is he a deputy?” Michelle asked.

“No.” Helen laughed with a little shake of her head. “He’s still in high school. He has a project for his government class and Reese thought that this would help him.”

“Oh, that’s cool. This is my husband, Joe.” Michelle indicated the man next to her.

“Nice to meet you.” Helen took the offered hand.

“You too.” He gave her hand a light squeeze before they both pulled away. “I was wondering about this woman of his. I’m not disappointed.”

He kissed his wife on the cheek. “I’m going to go aggravate my favorite sister-in-law.”

“They’re all your favorite.” She said as he stood up.

“Keeps things simple.” He said walking away.

Michelle laughed at him as he wrapped an arm around Gina’s shoulders.

“So tell me about the woman who has my brother all tied up in knots.”

“I think you must have the wrong person.” Helen blushed.

“My brother has never asked for a boudoir set before. And I've certainly never had a man order it and say that they don’t want to see them. Knots, my dear lady. And we’re not talking the kinky kind he likes.”

“The kinky knots?” Helen looked confused.

“He hasn’t had you tied up in the playroom yet?” Michelle was now the one confused.

“Playroom?”

“Oh, fuck.” Michelle murmured as she looked at the other woman. “You spend the night there, right?” Helen nodded, still confused. “And you’ve had sex?” Helen shook her head no this time. “I’ll be damned.”

“What are going to be damned about?” Reese asked placing a kiss on the top of his sister’s head.

“You.” She said standing up and hugging him. “You’re one hundred percent in over your head. And I hope you stay that way.”

She kissed Helen on her cheek before walking towards her husband. Reese shook his head as he gently pulled Helen to her feet.

“Hello, beautiful.” He murmured as he wrapped his arms around her and kissed her.

“Reese?” Helen asked quietly when they broke apart. “Do you have a playroom?”

He sighed and kissed her forehead. “I do. It’s the room that has a lock on it.”

“What is it for?” she asked.

“How about we talk about that later? I’ll show you the playroom this weekend and answer all your questions.”

“Promise?”

Tipping her chin up, he kissed her lightly. “I promise.”

Reese gave his sister a look as he held Helen close. “What. The. Hell?” he mouthed.

“Sorry.” She mouthed back.
