Chapter 63: IGYS Security

*Better to fight for something than to live for nothing. – General George S. Patton*

Shelby rescheduled guards to cover Jolene Fargo. When she sent out the message that she needed volunteers for the job, she did not expect to get as many as she did. The message was sent out to the hundred guards that worked for Reese and another thirty or so that kept asking to work for him. They all responded with a yes.

The updated schedule was sent out via email, and she quickly received confirmations. The first two guards were in place within an hour. Eight-hour shifts of two guards. This allowed them to step away for breaks without having to call for someone.

Neo was clear about his rules. Especially when they were guarding an abused woman. Under no circumstances was a guard to be in the room with the victim without their duty partner. If one stepped away, the other stayed, within view, but in a separate room. All activity was logged. All visitors were checked. No exceptions.

Shelby contacted the club managers and let them know about the change in staffing. Then she sent an email to each manager outlining the updates. Finally, she sent one to Reese and Neo including the updated schedule and copies of the manager emails.

Neo had high standards. It was Shelby’s goal to exceed them. She usually did.

She stretched her arms above her head and arched her back before standing up and going to Neo’s office. She was not wearing a bra today because she had her back piece worked on last night. Twice a week, Shelby did the books for a local tattoo shop. In addition to the pay, she received time in the chair.

Her short curly auburn hair was pulled back into two French braids running along the sides of her hair. They were a little off center and crooked. Her son had to change clothes before they left the apartment, and she didn’t have time to do her hair. Once she was in the office, waiting for the coffee to brew, she didn’t get that at home either, she quickly braided her hair up.

She wore her typical pair of black slacks and a nice shirt. Today’s shirt was a loose hot pink with black buttons on the shoulder. It complimented her honey-colored skin and dark chocolate almond eyes. Her heels that she wore for clients were discarded under her desk and neon green flip flops graced her feet, making their distinctive sounds as she walked over to Neo’s office.

Neo looked up from his task as she lightly knocked on the door. He was on the phone with a client and motioned for her to enter. The handset was cradled between his head and shoulder as he worked the Rubik’s cube that he kept on his desk. He was leaning back in his chair with his booted feet crossed at the ankles and propped on the corner of his desk.

He wore thick denim jeans and a company polo shirt. Depending on the job, it would depend on the uniform. Every employee was provided with two sets of three uniforms. Almost all had black tactical pants, with very few exceptions. They then had company black t-shirts, white polo shirts and gray uniform shirts. Some contracts, such as Reese’s, stated that locations would have their uniforms provided.

Motioning for her to enter, he dropped his feet to the floor and sat up in his chair. Dropping the half-completed cube, he answered a question into the phone. Grabbing a pencil, he jotted a note on the calendar blotter.

Shelby made a mental note to go ahead and order more calendars for next year. He was already scribbling his notes in March, and it was not even December. It didn’t matter how many notepads or sticky pads that she bought him, he preferred to make his notes on the desk blotter. She bought him a blank blotter once but then he didn’t know where any of his notes were.

Muting the desk phone, Neo pulled out a tube of lotion. “Back must be itching by now.”

“Like crazy.” She admitted as she lifted her shirt and presented her back to him.

He unmuted the phone before applying the lotion to her back. “I don’t think that will be any problem. Send me information for the events and I’ll have Shelby work up an estimate.”

The man on the phone agreed and the call ended. Shelby pushed the button on the phone ending the call on their end. He handed her the handset that she replaced in the cradle.

“Whatever price you come up with, double it. When he complains, give him a twenty-five percent discount.” Neo ordered.

“What’s it for?”

“Some event that Tweedle Dum wants to do, showing how awesome he is.”

Shelby laughed as she pulled her shirt back down. “Deedle. Thom Deedle.”

“Same difference.” He said tossing the lotion back into the drawer and standing up. “I’m going to the hospital to check in with Reese. Can you call the contractor and find out how much longer I’m out of my house?”

“I’m on it.” She replied going back to her desk, holding back her laugh.

“Don’t say it.” He warned with a light laugh.

“I’ll let Reese say it.” She replied with a smile.

Neo grabbed his jacket and helmet as he headed out of his office and towards the door. The unmarked IGYS building was in the warehouse district and had once been a storage facility for a grocery store chain. The former freezer was now an equipment storage safe. Inside the warehouse was a training facility with a gun range in the basement.

When he got the building, fifteen years ago, it was at a public auction. The former owner owed taxes and Neo got it at a steal. Twenty thousand dollars for a 1.5-million-dollar property. It took a lot of hard work, long hours and putting up with bullshit, but it was worth it.

He had over four hundred employees. Multiple long-term contracts. Was listed as one of the states most eligible bachelors and the top entrepreneurs to watch. The most eligible bachelor always tickled him because his mother swore that no woman wanted a man covered in tattoos.

How wrong she had been.
