Chapter 140: Sonogram
*In raising my children, I have lost my mind but found my soul. – Lisa T. Shepherd*
In the last few weeks, Helen swore her belly had doubled in size every week. When they were in Hawaii, she blamed it on the rich foods and eating just about everything she wanted. But when they got back, her belly continued to grow.
And grow.
The stress of the fire and Jolene’s attack did not help any.
A year ago, her life was completely different. She struggled to pay her bills. New clothes would have been a luxury. Another baby was not even a thought.
And now, she lived with a man who too care of everything. Pampered her in ways that she still could not even imagine. And would give her anything and everything that she needed or wanted.
Including his baby.
Today, her heartburn was horrible. She had eaten so many antacid tablets that she was certain she was going to become a giant antacid tablet. She was getting more when Reese appeared in her office doorway.
“Still bad?”
“The worst ever.” She admitted.
“We should ask Dr. Aberton about it.” Reese suggested as he walked over to help her out of her chair.
“I still need to get my stuff gathered up.” She objected as she was gently pulled to her feet.
He kissed her gently as he cupped her face between his hands. She clutched his shirt in her hands and tried to lean into him, her belly getting in the way.
“Go to the bathroom, I know that your bladder has been squished to the size of a peanut. And I’ll gather up your stuff.”
“Maybe half a peanut.” Helen smiled at him.
“My poor Kitten.” Reese murmured before kissing her again. “Go on, sweetheart.”
She waddled out of the office and down the hall as he packed up her laptop and files that she was working on. A knock on the door had him looking over and seeing Frank standing there.
“She looks miserable, and” he stepped out in the hallway and looked around before stepping back in and whispering “huge.”
“I know.” Reese sighed. “We were just going for a checkup, but I think they’re going to try to do a sonogram. I called earlier and told them that i was worried about the weight gain.”
“Good.” He looked out in the hall and smiled. “There she is.”
“Hey, Frank.” Helen huffed as she trudged back down the hall.
She had not wanted to say anything about being pregnant just yet. But then, she came back from Hawaii and looked like she ate the whole luau pig herself. Now, just two weeks later, she was almost as big as she was when she had Jaxon. He was her biggest baby at just over ten pounds.
Although Reese assured her that she was still beautiful, she felt like a beached whale. The fact that the trainers at the gym would not let her do a lot now did help any at all. Especially with her ankles swollen. Not that she could see them, but she sure could feel them.
“You look exhausted.” Frank observed. “Why don’t you work from home for a few days?”
“I can’t -.”
“Prop your feet up at your desk?” Frank interrupted her. “Exactly. So, take a few days, if you have questions, give us a call. If you need a nap, take a nap. You’re not meeting with clients yet; you’re just doing grunt work. As long as it’s done by your deadlines, I don’t care when you do it.”
Tears flooded her eyes, and she struggled not to cry. “Thank you.” She whispered.
She was wiping her eyes and did not see the slight motions between the two men in her office. After receiving permission to touch another Dom’s sub, Frank gently pulled her in for a hug.
“You have that sorry bastard wrapped around your finger.” Her boss whispered in Helen’s ear. “Make him take care of you. Remember, this is one the few times that *you* are the one completely in control. And he wouldn’t have it any other way.”
She gave a small nod and hugged him back as she sniffled.
“I’ll let Katherine and Geoff know that you’re going to be home for a few days.” Frank said as he handed her over to his friend. “Just keep us updated.”
“We will.” Reese assured him as he tucked Helen against his side.
They were in the elevator before a thought struck Helen. “My purse.”
“I have it.” He answered with a light kiss to the top of her head. “I’ve always got you, Kitten.”
“I love you.” She smiled up at him as she leaned against his side.
Grinning down at her, he gave her a quick kiss. “I love you too.”
After he tucked her into the new SUV, the highest safety rating with all the bells and whistles, he slid behind the wheel. She had objected to a new car when he first brought it home. But he laid out his reasoning and she found herself parking her little KIA and driving the luxury vehicle. Which she now loved.
They chatted on the way over about how each of their mornings had gone. The shopping center project was back on track after the horrible rains delayed the project from starting. It also showed him that there were more issued than what had been found in the inspections.
Jack was doing well adjusting to not living on the streets anymore. He was a hard worker and willing to learn. And always had the decaf coffee brewing for Willow. Her delivery was scheduled for next week, if the newest little princess didn’t try to make an early appearance. The last two had decided to arrive early with her youngest arriving nearly a month before the due date. This time, she had limited bed rest and was only working a few hours in the morning.
The wait for the doctor was short and they were taken back to get her weight and other vitals before being shown to a room. Helen sighed as she looked at the exam table that looked about four feet taller than it had a month ago.
Reese scooped her up and sat her on the table. Smiling at him, she settled on the uncomfortable padding. He lifted one foot and removed the sandal so he could rub the bottom.
“That feels wonderful.” Helen sighed as she leaned back on the small pillow.
Reese chuckled. “Pretty sure you said the same thing when-“
“Reese!” she hissed as there was a knock on the door.
“Okay, mom, dad. We’re going to do a sonogram before the doctor comes in.” The nurse said from the partially opened door. “Can you walk, or would you like a taxi ride?”
Reese moved quickly and picked her up. “Where are we going?”
The nurse guided them to the sono room, and the tech took over. After a moment, he excused himself and returned with the nurse and doctor. Fear enveloped Helen as they spoke softly.
“What’s wrong?” Reese demanded.
The doctor nodded to the tech and the room was filled with a strong heartbeat. “This is the baby that we’ve been monitoring. But” he grinned, “she seems to be hiding her sister.”
The heartbeat faded and then another heartbeat filled the air.
