Chapter 54: Arrival

*Beware; for I am fearless, and therefore powerful. – Mary Shelley*

Hendricks came around the corner in the complex and saw Pawlowski standing next to his patrol car. She got out of the car and switched on her camera giving the older man a not so nice greeting.

“I hate these fucking calls.”

He agreed and they hurried up the path. “With a damned fucking passion.”

From the other side of the door was a loud crash followed by a man yelling “I own you, bitch!”

“Ladies first.” Pawlowski motioned to the door.

Twenty years ago, he could have taken the door down with no issue. Now he let the younger officers have the pleasure. He stepped to the side, with his tazer drawn and aimed at the ground, with his back to the outside wall, he nodded at the younger officer.

“Thanks.” Hendricks replied with a smirk.

She did two well-placed kicks to the door, and it burst open on the second kick. With quick movements taught by the army and perfected in the department, she drew her tazer as she entered the apartment.

“Sheriff’s department! Lay flat on your stomach!” Hendricks ordered as Pawlowski gave an update over the radio.

Hank released Jolene’s throat and turned to face the intruders. Two sheriff deputies pointed their weapons at him. Rage flooded through him, and he lunged at the female deputy.

“TAZER! TAZER! TAZER!” both deputies yelled as they deployed the tazers into him.

It was moments like these that both deputies wished that they still had the K9 in the department. Big Jake retired earlier in the year and the former Sheriff Underwood saw it as a waste of money. It was less than a week since the new sheriff was sworn in and the paperwork had already been started for a new K9.

Hank fell back twitching. Hendricks released her tazer and laid it on the floor.

“David Michael five-one-seven on scene.” Jensen called over the radio as he ran up the walk to the apartment.

Pawlowski disengaged his tazer as he approached Hank. Rolling the man over he cuffed the man before patting him down for any weapons.

“I know you know the song, feel free to sing along.” Pawlowski told Hank. “You have the right to remain silent, anything you say or do, can and will be held against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford one, one will be assigned to you. You have the right to legal representation during questioning. If you decide you want to quit answering questions you may do so at any time.”

“But if you’d like to man up and confess, that would be even better, ass wipe.”

While Pawlowski was dealing with Hank, Hendricks and Jenson were attending to Jolene. Hendricks carefully removed the rag from the woman’s mouth. Jenson held the unresponsive hand and felt for a pulse.

“Five-one-seven to dispatch.” Jenson said into the radio at his shoulder.

“Go ahead, Five-one-seven.” Came back over the radios.

“Female victim unresponsive with faint pulse and shallow breathing. Box needed ASAP.”

“Confirm ambulance to scene.”

“David Michael Alpha zero-one on scene. Requesting investigator to scene. Please advise, no local PD allowed on scene.” Gina said into her radio as she entered the apartment. Looking around, she gave a low whistle.

Pawlowski stood Hank up and grabbed the second tazer before walking him out the door. He sat the man in the back of the car as an Impala screeched to a stop. Closing the door, he sat the tazer guns on the roof.

“Reese!” Pawlowski called as the man got out of the Impala. “I can’t let you in the crime scene.”

“Tell the sheriff I'm here.”

“Five-nine-three to Alpha zero-one. Concerned citizen needs to speak with you.”

“Affirmative.”

Reese nodded and waited by his car. He pulled his phone out and dialed the unknown number.

“Hello?” JD answered.

“Where’s your mom?” Reese asked as Gina walked out of the apartment.

“Hang on.” JD said and then Helen was on the phone. “Reese?”

“I’m here, baby.” He told her.

She started sobbing over the phone. “I heard her stop fighting.”

“Hang on, baby. How did you know?”

“She called me.”

“When did she call you?”

“I’ll have to check my phone. I got a crash notification on the emergency app and then she was calling me.”

“Is the phone line still open?” Reese asked holding up a finger to his sister.

“Yes. It’s the app that Bunny recommended. It records everything until disabled.”

An ambulance pulled up and the paramedics rushed to the apartment.

“Ambulance is here. I’m coming to get you.”

“I can-.”

“I know you can. But I’m coming to get you. Do not hang up your phone until the sheriff tells you that you can. Okay? I’m on my way, baby.”

“OK.”

Ending the call, Reese smiled at the newly elected sheriff. “Find her phone. It has the emergency app that the advocacy center uses. It’s still recording.”

“It’s bad, Reese. She may not make it.” Gina said softly as a police car pulled up. “Get out of here. This is about to get ugly too.”

“One four three.” Reese said sliding back into his car. Gina softly said it back to him as she approached the city patrol car. Reese maneuvered around the cars as the sheriff stopped the officer.

He left the apartment complex and headed over to Helen’s apartment. As he pulled out onto the road, he activated the voice to text program on the phone.

“Send a message to Princess Group. Helen’s daughter has been hurt. Will be out of touch for a while. Love you all.”

Going down the main street in town, Reese expected his phone to be blowing up. When he turned off Wilson and onto College Street, it still had not chirped. He pulled into the back lot of Helen’s apartments. His mustang sat between JD’s pickup and Bunny’s little sedan. He pulled into an empty guest spot next to Helen’s car.

Just before he got out of the Impala, his phone chirped with a message from Gina.
