Chapter 72: Swim Meet
*If you want to be the best, you have to do the things that other people aren’t willing to do. – Michael Phelps*
The second Saturday in December, Edison High School hosted a swim and dive competition. Afterwards, Dean stood huddled against JD as he held a large towel wrapped around them both. Although the natatorium was warm and the pool heated, their wet skin was still cold. JD’s coach gave him a warning look and he simply grinned back at her.
Where Helen and Reese sat, they both laughed.
“I don’t think they ever went on their date.” Helen mused.
“I think you’re right.” Reese agreed. “He didn’t want to leave Jolene.”
“We should tell them to go over break.”
“I’m pretty sure that they will.” He stood up and helped her to stand in the bleacher styles seating area. With a hand at her lower back, they walked down the stairs and then over to the small gate leading to the pool area.
Helen walked down the short staircase and she gave them both a quick hug. “I’m proud of you both.”
“Thanks, mom.” JD said as he kissed the top of her head.
“Did you ever get to go on your date?” Reese asked.
“No.” Dean admitted.
“You should do it over break.” Helen suggested. “Are you all going to eat?”
“I think so.” He looked around and saw Deon. “Hey, D!”
The tall lanky caramel colored swimmer walked over. As soon as he saw Dean, a giant smile split his face.
“We still going to eat?” JD asked.
“Craig just called, and the diner is closed for a holiday party.”
“Why don’t you go to Pier and Beam?” Reese suggested.
Deon chuckled. “No offense, we can’t afford that.”
“Oh! Yeah!” Dean laughed. “Then you can tell them about your dad making an ass of himself.”
JD chuckled. “He did do that. You want to go?”
“Can I?” She batted her eyes at her uncle.
“Let me think about this. Get’s you out of the house and gives me time alone with his mom.” Reese grinned. “Let me call and find out who’s on shift.”
“Gross!” Dean gagged as Reese walked away, pulling his phone out of his jacket pocket. “I don’t want to think about my uncle having sex.”
“With my mom.” JD added.
“Get it, Mrs. Dunning!” Deon laughed as JD pushed his friend into the pool. Grabbing his hand, he pulled the couple in with him.
“Ten laps, Williams!” Coach Jenkins called out as the three of them surfaced. “Dunning, get the lady out of the pool and do ten laps.”
They did the laps before they showered and met out front. Dean had a business card with the name of the manager on duty. When the four teens showed up at the high-end restaurant, she handed over the card. They were escorted to a table in a dining area overlooking the lake.
“I think we should hang out more often.” Craig winked at Dean.
“Dude, Eliza will kill you.” Deon laughed.
“She will,” JD agreed with a laugh. “Eliza is incredibly jealous.”
“I would break up with her, but she scares me.” Craig made a motion like he was being choked by someone.
“Not funny.” JD told him, all amusement gone from him.
Realizing his mistake, Craig sobered up quickly. “Sorry, man. I wasn’t thinking.”
JD relaxed and placed an arm along the back of Dean’s chair. Over dinner, they joked and talked like regular teens. They laughed loudly and caused a few other tables to look over at them. Especially when JD told them about his dinner with Bob. After appetizers, dinner and dessert, they made their way out to their cars.
“Went by your apartment the other day, neighbor said that you moved.” Craig said as they all stood in the parking lot.
“Yeah. We live just outside of town now.” JD said as he leaned against the Mustang.
“I’m digging this so much better than that pickup.” Deon said.
“Thanks. You should see my uncle’s other cars.”
“What else does he have?” JD tried to think if ha had seen any other cars beside the two muscle cars.
“The Impala and a Tesla.” She gave a small laugh. “He got the extra program for the engine to sound like a muscle car, still doesn’t like it. He also still has his first pickup from when he started Oar. And a work pickup.”
“Where the hell does he keep them?” JD asked.
“The office.” She said with a little shrug.
“Does he actually ever go to the office?”
“Yeah, but not if he can help it. Willow runs the office, and he would rather work from home, one of the clubs, go to the gym or do whatever he does with your mom.” She shuddered. “Fifty shades of Reese.”
“Why can’t my family keep their secrets to themselves?” JD asked shaking his head.
Dean laughed as she leaned over and kissed him. “But you get to be an uncle.”
Smiling down at her, he gave her a quick kiss. “I do. We just don’t know if it’s going to be vanilla or chocolate.”
Dean laughed but his two friends looked confused.
“My brother is bi, and his girlfriend is pregnant. They don’t know if the baby is his or her husband’s. And her husband is black.”
“Hell, yeah!” Deon declared. “Black man stealing your girl *and* your boyfriend!”
The others laughed at him.
“Doubles your chances at getting a date.” Dean pointed out with a grin.
“Look, even JD’s girl knows that you need help getting a date.” Craig laughed.
“Fuck you, asshole. You’re just jealous because you got a crazy bitch and not all this.” Deon replied as he struck a pose.
As Dean and JD laughed, Craig got an evil gleam in his eyes. Moving quickly, he grabbed Deon’s face and gave him a loud smacking kiss. The other two busted out laughing even harder as Deon sputtered and Craig took off running for his car.
As Deon went after him, Dean moved towards the driver’s door. “I like your friends.”
“Yeah?” JD asked as they both got into the car. Closing the door, he looked over at her. “Sometimes, I do too.”
