Chapter 92: Pax
*What makes you a man is not the ability to make a child; it’s the courage to raise one. – Barak Obama*
Bunny’s appointment had been at eleven thirty and her sonogram at two. It was Ty’s off day and Jaxon took a personal day. He wasn’t sure how he was going to tell the guys that he worked with that his roommates were expecting a baby. And it might be his.
Ever since they found out that she was pregnant, all three of them were at the appointments. It had been an interesting first visit.
“The nurse states that you needed to talk to me about your pregnancy?” Dr. Aberton said, smiling at Bunny. Nervously, the expectant mother nodded as the man sat down on the rolling stool. “The good thing is that’s why we’re here.”
“We chose you because you are LGBTQ friendly.”
“Ahhhh….” The man chuckled and for first time looked at the two men. “And you’re involved in a triad.”
They had all nodded or answered in the affirmative.
“You’re not the only ones.” He had assured them and said that they had protocols for situations like this. The staff called both men dad as easily as they called Bunny mom.
The only thing that Dr. Aberton insisted on was that they have a custody agreement drawn up. “I’ve seen it with other triads that think they can make it through anything. Then the husband discovers that he’s not the dad. Just in case, you three need to have a plan. Look at some family therapy.”
With the suggestion of family therapy, the three of them laughed.
“I’m a therapist at the Family Advocacy Center.” Bunny told him with a smile.
“Then I am going to assume that you already have a plan?”
“Yes. We have a communal relationship agreement.” Ty explained. “We also have contracts.”
“I’m assuming you’re the top?”
“I am the Dom; she is our sub, and he is my switch.” Ty nodded.
“Are you involved with other men also?”
“No.” All three answered.
“And all three of you are regularly tested?”
“Yes.” Ty confirmed. “We have to maintain healthy tests for our Club memberships. We don’t play with others, but I’m an officer and we all enjoy the scenes.”
“No judgement.” The doctor admitted with a light chuckle.
When they had left that first visit, they each had a new parent kit. Even when they left yesterday, they all had pictures of the baby. JD had been so overwhelmed by hearing the heartbeat that he pulled out his phone and recorded it.
He had gone out for lunch and called Bunny to check on her. She had escaped the first trimester with very little morning sickness. But it had come on full force during the second. He parked in his regular spot, they didn’t have assigned spots, but everyone always parked in the same place.
Jaxon got out of his pickup and walked into the shop. There was a note taped to the board in his bay.
*Come see me. Pax*
George Paxton was a good guy and a great boss. That didn’t mean that he wanted to be called into the owner’s office. He stowed his jacket and thermos in his locker and then headed into the office.
“Go on back.” Ramona smiled at him from behind her desk. She was the receptionist, secretary, scheduler and dispatcher. And Pax was smart enough to know that his company could not work without her. With her retirement pending, he had begum to search for a replacement.
Or two. Or twelve.
“Thanks, beautiful.” Jaxon winked at her and headed down the short hall.
Pax looked up from his computer and smiled at Jaxon. He was an older man with graying hair and beard. He had deep green eyes that were starting to get crows’ feet in the corners. If he would stand up from his chair, he would stand only a few inches below Jaxon’s height with thick soled boots.
“Come on in and sit down.” Pax grinned at him. “Oh, shut the door.”
Crap. Jaxon thought as he closed the door and then turned to sit down in front of his boss’ desk. If the door was closed, this would not be good.
“My daughter, Izzy, she’s a nurse. She’s not supposed to say things, but she slipped last night.”
Fear settled into Jaxon’s stomach as he suddenly remembered seeing Izzy yesterday.
“Son, I want you to know that I like to think of myself as progressive and forward thinking.”
Jaxon nodded, knowing that there would be a big but coming in that statement.
“And I would hope that my employees feel comfortable enough to come to me with anything. Good and bad.”
He swallowed hard, fearing that he was about to be fired.
“But, if you don’t tell me that your girl is pregnant, we can’t let you go on paternity leave when the baby is born.”
Jaxon felt his jaw fall open in shock. All thought fled his mind, and he could no longer process anything.
“There is a chance that the baby is yours, right?” Pax asked.
Jaxon nodded, not sure if he could find his voice to answer the question.
“So, let’s get some paperwork completed and get you ready for leave when the time comes.”
“Thank you.” Jaxon whispered.
“Son, I remember when we were expecting our first baby.” Pax chuckled. “She got any crazy midnight cravings?”
“The filling inside the Ding Dongs. Not the cake, just the filling. And only out of Ding Dongs.” Jaxon laughed. “With Wendy’s fries.”
“That’s a bit…”
“Disgusting?”
Pax laughed. “Yes. But I have four kids, I’m not going to tell any woman that her pregnancy craving is disgusting. I know better than that.”
“Usually at three in the morning. Ty was headed back to the station from a call the other morning and brought them both by as I was getting ready to go get them.”
“That’s the advantage of having a spare person. Don’t let people tell you it’s wrong. Love is never wrong.”
“Thanks, Pax.”
“I learned it the hard way. Nearly lost my son. You got sonogram pictures yet?”
“Got some yesterday.”
“I expect to see them before the end of the day.”
