Chapter 147: Mermaid's Purse
*She is a mermaid on dry land and the world is her ocean. – J. Ironword*
Bunny was miserable.
Since Sunday afternoon at JD’s graduation party, she has felt like she needed to go to the bathroom. In fact, her description to her men was “I feel like I need to take the biggest shit known in the history of all time. That big pile of shit in the *Jurassic Park* movie, the original one, has nothing on this.”
Earlier at work, she had been miserable and uncomfortable. Before the ten o'clock Monday morning meeting, Khun told her to go home, put her feet up and call the doctor.
Now, a little under four hours, she sat in the waiting room at Dr. Aberton’s office. She squirmed and shifted and sighed expressing her level of discomfort.
“Johnson.” The perky little blonde nurse said from the doorway.
Jaxon and Ty both stood up and helped her to her feet.
“You poor thing.” The nurse cooed as they walked through the door and guided her to the scale. “You look so miserable.”
“I feel so miserable.” Bunny admitted as she let go of he men and the nurse wrote down the number.
“Well, let’s see what we can do about making you feel better.” The other woman suggested. “We’re going to be in exam room three.”
The small group moved to the exam room and her men helped Bunny up onto the exam table.
“Other than miserable, tell me how you feel.” The nurse said as she began to get vitals on her patient.
“Fucking constipated.” Bunny sighed.
The nurse gave a small laugh as she pumped up the blood pressure cuff. “The iron pills will do that.” After getting her reading, she removed the cuff and hung the stethoscope around her neck. “I’ll let the doctor know you’re ready.”
Bunny was still trying to get comfortable when there was a knock on the door before Dr. Aberton entered.
“Mom, dads, how are we doing today?” The doctor asked with his usual smile.
“Miserable.” All three replied.
“Well, my dear, you’re forty-two weeks pregnant. If you were not miserable, I would worry.” He helped her to lay back on the bed and began to palpitate her stomach. “Any abdominal cramps or contractions?”
“No.” Bunny shifted uncomfortably.
“I think it’s time to talk about either an induction or c-section.” The doctor suggested. “Baby is in the right position. I think she might just need a little assistance.”
Bunny grunted as another wave of pressure rippled across her back.
“You okay there?” the doctor asked.
“I just feel like…” she sighed. “I feel like I need to take a giant shit and I’m getting these weird back spasms.”
The firm hands on her stomach paused briefly. “Let’s get you to scoot down and put your bum at the edge of the table.”
After getting her where he wanted her, he sat down between her legs and helped to remove the maternity panties. He gently placed her feet in the stirrups and then he stood up and yanked open the door.
“Izzy!” He called out to the first nurse he saw. “Clear the back, call an ambulance and get me a cart.”
Closing the door, he returned between Bunny’s legs.
“Is everything okay?” Ty demanded as his wife began to panic.
“You’re a paramedic?” Dr. Aberton asked as he pulled on gloves and a mask.
“Yes.” Ty answered tersely.
“Good. Babies come when they’re ready, and your daughter is ready.” He said handing over gloves and a mask. “Mom, you are fully dilated, the urge to poop is your body telling you to push. Some women only have back contractions, and it looks like you are one of them.”
The door opened and Izzy and another nurse entered with a cart with equipment and a small incubator.
“Ambulance is seven minutes out.” Izzy said as they both got into place.
“Pretty sure we don’t have seven minutes.” The doctor chuckled. “Bunny, the next time you feel that spasm in your back, push as hard as you can.”
“Now.” Bunny gritted out the warning and began to push.
“That’s it, mom.” Izzy urged. “Dads, give her some support and help her push.”
They each stood on either side of the table and took her hands in theirs and wrapped their other arms around her back.
“Keep pushing.” The doctor ordered with a harsh demanding voice. “Do not stop pushing.”
“Oh my…” Izzy whispered, and the other nurse’s eyes widened to the size of dinner plates.
“I’m guessing that neither of you have ever seen this before?” Their boss asked with a grin, and both shook their heads, each giving a soft no.
“Have you?” Izzy whispered.
“When I was doing my rounds sometime in the last century.” He admitted. “That’s it mom, keep pushing, don’t stop.”
Bunny screamed in pain as tears began to stream down her face.
“I know, it hurts, but don’t stop pushing.” Izzy encouraged. “Nearly there, mom.”
With another scream and hard push, Bunny felt her baby enter the world. And ripping her to shreds.
“Dads," Dr. Aberton smiled, “I suggest pictures.”
Jaxon kissed Bunny’s temple and then moved to the foot of the table, pulling his phone out if his pocket. “What…?” he asked as he snapped a few pictures.
“It’s called a mermaid’s purse.” The doctor said as he carefully stood up and moved to place the baby on bunny’s chest. “Medical term is en caul. Commonly known as a mermaid or veiled birth.”
“She’s still in the sac.” Ty murmured against his wife’s hair.
“She is.” The doctor agreed. He handed Ty the needle nose scissors and showed him where to cut. “We’ll have you cut the sac and Jaxon can cut the cord.”
“Where is the cord?” Bunny asked as Jaxon filmed Ty very carefully cutting the amniotic sac.
“It’s all encased in the sac.” Izzy explained as the sac ruptured and fluids spilled out. “It’s a rare birth, even more rare for it to be a complete purse.” The nurse reached over and rubbed the baby’s back as she spoke, encouraging the newborn to breath on her own.
The first sound was a soft whimper and the next a little louder. The dark eyes fluttered open as her mouth opened and a loud wail resonated through the room.
Mother and child were both crying. Ty kissed his wife as a few of his own tears slipped out of his eyes. Izzy placed clamps on the umbilical cord as the other nurse cleaned up the fluids on the floor. Dr. Aberton guided Jaxon’s hand to cut the cord as Ty filmed this part.
“She’s beautiful.” Jaxon said as he tried to see his daughter through the tears. “Just like her mommy.”
“Just like her daddies.” Bunny added as there was a knock on the door and there was a muffled “Fire department” from the other side.
After a glance at her boss who nodded, Izzy opened the door and let the two paramedics inside. They exchanged vital information and then the nurses left to give the paramedics room to work.
“Johnson.” One of the men grinned. “Did you call for a taxi?”
“Only the finest for our girls.” He said then looked at his other partner. “Our girls.”
Jaxon smiled back at him, some of his fears being pushed aside and soothed. As he looked at the dark skin of the baby, he feared that he would be pushed out of the family. But as the paramedics moved Bunny and the baby to the gurney, Ty walked around and kissed Jaxon.
“I love you.” Ty told him softly and Jaxon gave a soft sob. “We love you. You’re our partner and our daughter’s father just as much as I am.”
Jaxon nodded as he hugged the other man. “I love you. All three of you.”
Following the paramedics out through the waiting room, they were greeted with cheers and applause from the other patients and their families. They all accepted congratulations from the strangers who all looked happy and not at all upset that their appointments were postponed.
As Bunny was loaded up into the back of the ambulance to go the short distance to the hospital, the radios crackled to life stating that the other crew was leaving the residence with an unconscious woman who was thirty-two weeks pregnant with triplets. Jaxon looked at ty with fear quickly taking over his own joy.
“Prater.” Ty grabbed one of the firefighters standing nearby. “What’s the address of that other call?”
Prater requested a repeat of the address, and it quickly was confirmed over the air. Jaxon paled and Ty shoved him into the back of the ambulance with Bunny.
“I’ll meet you over there.” Ty assured them and headed for their car. At Prater's look, Ty gave a sad smile. "That's his mom's address."
