Chapter 81: Doctor
*Sometimes the littlest things take up the most room in your heart. – Winnie the Pooh*
The first thing Monday morning after she and Reese first had sex, Helen called her OB/GYN and asked for the first available appointment. That was not until December twenty-third. She had told him that she had an appointment and he asked if she wanted him there.
Blushing everywhere that he could see, and he could see a lot of her, she shook her head no. Now, as she walked into Jolene’s room, she wished he had gone. Helen smiled at the two guards that were at the door of her daughter’s room.
“Is everything okay?” Helen asked as they both stood up.
Nichols smiled at her. “Yes, ma’am, Miss Helen. The family is in there and we were just giving some privacy.”
“Oh, thank you.” She said placing her hand on the handle.
“Miss Helen,” Nichols said nervously. “I want to apologize.”
Turning towards him, she looked at him, confused. “For what?” She was already emotional and was afraid that she would start crying.
“The night that you came to Constellations, and I turned you away.” He admitted shamefully. “You didn’t fit the image that I had in my head for who would get into the club, and I sent you away.”
Glancing at his nameplate, she looked back up at his face. “Mr. Nichols, consider yourself forgiven. I don’t even think about that night anymore.”
He sighed in relief and thanked her. Smiling she stepped into the large private room. It was hard to imagine that that night was only three months ago. It seemed like a lifetime ago. So much had changed, for the good and the bad. But even the bad, ended up being good in its own way.
Opening the door, Helen discovered that the room was full of people. Jolene sat up in a chair Jennifer, as one of Reese’s nieces, cut her hair. JD and Dean lay cuddled up asleep in the hospital bed. Jaxon sat in a chair with Bunny on his lap and Ty was propped up on the arm.
Cheryl sat on the couch between Neo and her dad. The adults were remembering when they were young and would stay up all night watching movies. With it now being winter break, she assumed that is what the two teens did.
Reese could tell something was bothering her as soon as she walked in. He stood up and walked over to where Helen was putting her bag on the small counter. Gently turning her, he saw the unshed tears in her eyes.
“Baby?” Reese whispered and she refused to look up. “What’s wrong with my sweet mermaid?”
“I had my appointment today.” She whispered handing him a piece of paper.
Looking at the folded paper, he knew what it said without opening it. All the times they had unprotected sex. Guilt flooded him as he realized that although he would love a baby with her, he never considered what she wanted.
Reese sat the paper on the counter behind her and then tipped her face up to him with a gentle touch on her neck. “Tell me what you want to do.”
“What?” She asked in surprise.
“Tell me what you want to do.” He repeated softly ignoring the fact that the room had fallen silent.
“It’s your baby…”
“It’s yours too. I knew you weren’t on birth control. I should have made sure you were protected. This isn’t all you. It took both of us.”
“Please don’t call it a mistake.” She pleaded softly.
“Nothing with you could ever be a mistake.” He leaned down and kissed her lightly. Resting his forehead on hers he looked deeply into her eyes. “It’s your choice. If you want this baby, we’ll have a baby. If you want a baby later, we’ll do that. Tell me what you want to do.”
“I want this baby.”
He smiled at her before kissing her. “Me too.”
“So, I’m not going to be the baby anymore?” JD grinned at them from the bed.
Jennifer, Cheryl and Dean all smiled and in unison yelled, “PRINCESS PARTY!”
“Ladies!” Reese said warning them and all three stopped mid-text. “She may not want her business to be known by the kingdom.”
Two apologized while Dean declared “Well, fuck.”
“Denise!” Jennifer scolded as Cheryl laughed.
Reese sighed as his phone vibrated. “Welcome to my life and all the women in it.”
“You said you wanted a partner to help with Dean?” Helen said moving her hands up his chest to his shoulders. He said yes as Jolene looked at Dean and signed that she was in trouble. Helen kissed Reese before stepping away from him.
“Dean, do you have your laptop with you?”
“No….” She said as JD rolled to his back, trying to contain his laughter.
“Germanic in origin.” Jaxon chuckled and his younger siblings began laughing.
“Boys.” Helen warned before focusing on the teen girl. “Tomorrow night, before dinner, I want the history of the word fuck including origin, first written reference, notable uses in history and current etymology. Double spaced, one sided, minimum of four references properly documented.”
Dean chuckled. “Copy and paste.”
“Handwritten. Legible. College ruled. And if mom can’t read it, you’re rewriting it until she can.” JD and Jaxon quoted at the same time.
Dean sat up in shock. “Uncle Owen!”
“Nope. I like it.” Reese grinned at his niece. “Nothing else is cleaning up that mouth of yours.”
“Why do you think we all have such good handwriting?” JD asked.
“And none of us swear around mom.” Jaxon added.
“There is a time and a place for language like that. And it’s not around me.” Helen told them.
Reese slid his arms around Helen and whispered in her ear; “I’m going to fuck you later.”
“That is the appropriate use of the word.” Helen replied quietly.
“And that’s how my mom ended up pregnant.” Jaxon grinned.
“That’s so not fair.” Dean pouted as she laid back down. JD laughed at her, and she playfully smacked him on his chest. He continued to laugh as he held her close and pinned her hand under his on his chest.
