Chapter 11
KATE
My body froze. I thought I was going to vomit. My blood pressure must have been dropping. He paused for a second when his eyes met mine.
My heart must have stopped, and now it was beating so fast that I felt like I might have a heart attack at any second. As if I became oblivious to any sound except the sound of my heart pounding and throbbing in my ears, everything seemed to be in slow motion.
Mr. Spencer stood up from the couch, bringing me back to reality and positioning himself next to me. I kept staring at him as if in a trance. I couldn't look away, and neither could he.
I had to force myself to snap back to reality. I closed my eyes for a few seconds. I breathed, taking in as much air as possible as if I had stopped breathing seconds ago. I tried to put all the jumbled thoughts in place, but it was impossible. I was freaking out with the questions that kept coming to my mind, one after the other.
What is he doing here? The worst part is the absurd thought that he might be Mr. Ryan. No. It's ridiculous. I tried to calm myself, telling myself that he must be here for business and would be leaving soon. But my world crumbled when I saw him saying goodbye to the last man just a few meters away from us. Then he came towards us, stopping right in front of us.
I felt a million different sensations, and everything mixed with excitement. I could smell him, and he looked so sexy in his suit. I got wet just from seeing him. How can he affect me like this? His hair was so neatly done, making him look like a serious and impenetrable man. He was impeccable. I instinctively bit my lower lip. He cleared his throat and swallowed, looking at me. I let go of my lip, realizing the situation.
Why the hell didn't I research my future boss? Unbelievable! How did I let this happen? It's ridiculous. How did I not think of looking up some pictures of him on Google? Well, I guess I did think about it, but I didn't do it.
He exchanged greetings with Mr. Spencer. He really is Ryan. Nathan Ryan? Is that really his name? A feeling of anger took over me instantly, remembering how he disappeared that day at the hotel.
"I thought I should make the introductions in person," Mr. Spencer said, pulling me out of my thoughts. Nathan looked at me, extending his hand. I blinked.
"Hello, Miss Collins."
I shook his hand firmly. The same hands that… Damn. I wanted to disappear.
"Mr. Ryan… It's a pleasure." We continued staring at each other for a few seconds, his blue eyes hypnotizing me. I noticed how his breathing became heavier, just like mine.
"So, everything went as planned," Mr. Spencer said, and I released Nathan's hand, realizing I had held it for too long. Argh, how embarrassing. He cleared his throat.
"Great."
"Well, now I have to get back to work. You take over from here. Don't hesitate to hire me if you need to."
"Sure. We'll take care of the paperwork around here."
Mr. Spencer turned to me.
"I hope you have an excellent first day, Miss Collins. You are an important part of this partnership."
"Thank you, Mr. Spencer."
He bid farewell to Nathan with a handshake before leaving us. I thought I heard him mention something about me being one of his best students.
Nathan looked at me, then at the blonde woman who was watching us while Mr. Spencer disappeared in the elevator.
"Miss McCartney, take the papers in the conference room to my office," he ordered.
"Yes, sir." The blonde woman hurried off towards the hallway, passing by us and offering me a friendly smile.
"Miss Collins, come with me," Nathan said, walking towards the elevator. I followed him. When the doors opened, he gestured for me to enter.
I stepped in, positioning myself on the opposite side. I could feel the tension building. The doors closed, and after what felt like an eternity, he pressed the button for the next floor. I remained motionless. Seconds later, they opened again, making me thankful I wouldn't have to spend any more time in the elevator with him. I was almost in a state of panic.
"Come," he said.
We passed another reception area, where there was a stylish white office desk. On it, I could see a laptop, a phone, and a stack of folders. All the furniture was white, just like the walls. There were expensive-looking paintings on the walls, and I recognized some artists thanks to my mother.
Nathan opened a massive, dark wooden door and waited for me to enter. I was dazzled once again as I stepped into the room. The view from the huge floor-to-ceiling windows was beautiful. Nathan walked past me, standing behind a large black office desk. The space was enormous, and everything was modern and organized. Black and white furniture adorned the room.
When I returned my attention to him, I saw him run his hands through his face and hair, making it tousled. He looked confused and irritated.
"What the fuck is going on?"
