Chapter 18
KATE
It was almost six o'clock when I woke up. I took a shower and sat in front of my vanity mirror. I needed to do something with my hair. I wasn't as excited about the party as I would have liked to be. All thanks to that damn Ryan.
I wish I could forget about him for a while. Or maybe forever. No. I couldn't forget about the best moments I ever experienced. I couldn't understand what I was feeling. Was it just because of the amazing sex? Why was I so obsessed with him? Maybe because he made me feel desired. Or because of the pleasure he could give me. Maybe it's just because this is new to me. The sex.
All I wanted was to have him all to myself, for an indefinite time. Where I could do whatever I wanted. Just to satisfy the crazy urge to feel him inside me, touching me, kissing me. Even though I felt like it was insatiable.
*'I still haven't done everything I want to do with you.'*
I would love to find out what he wanted to do. Oh, my God. What was happening to me? Once again, I was letting myself be carried away by this madness. Where was that girl who always acted with reason?
No sleeping with the boss. No sleeping with the boss. I focused on my hair, opting to leave it loose since I wasn't the queen of hairstyles. I chose a red dress above the knee, slightly tight, with long sleeves and a neckline. Maybe I overdid it. Too slutty. I laughed, looking at myself in the mirror. Sometimes more is more.
We crossed the huge courtyard of Emy's house after Lisa parked. The mansion was enormous and had security guards at the entrance. A guy checked our names on the guest list before pointing us down a hallway. We could already hear the noise of people. We entered the ballroom, and the place was packed. Most people couldn't be older than thirty.
Lisa spotted Emily and pulled me toward her. I wondered why they weren't playing loud electronic music, as Emily was only turning twenty-one, and that was totally her style.
As I found out, Lisa and Emily had been friends for a long time. Their families had business ties and a great friendship. I watched both of them hug each other, quite excited.
"You were amazing, Emy! Everything was amazing! Congratulations!"
"Thank you! We just have to wait a little longer... until the real party starts. My DJ should be arriving soon; he's a bit late. Bryan said it would be better to start calmly. You know, he always tries to control everything."
'Controlling everything', that reminded me of someone. I shook my head, trying to push any thoughts related to him away. When Lisa stepped away, I approached to greet the birthday girl. I hadn't known Emily for long. We met one afternoon at the mall and went shopping together.
We followed Emily to join other girls in the ballroom—Britney, Rachel, and Ashley, whom I also met through Lisa. I got lost in my thoughts while they chatted and laughed.
"Isn't that right, Kate?" Lisa said, pulling me out of my thoughts. Just then, I realized that Emily had left.
"What?"
"Lisa just told us about your new boss. She said he's a total hunk." Britney winked at me.
"Lisa!" I frowned at her.
"What? It's just the truth!" She shrugged.
"No! He's just a rich brat, utterly unbearable."
"But he's so hot! And you can't deny it!" She gave me a sly smile. I rolled my eyes at her.
"Why don't we talk about how your 'relationships' are going, Britney?" I tried to change the subject.
"Things have been pretty tough lately."
"That's not what the guy I saw in your apartment two days ago would say, Bri!" Rachel laughed.
"He was just a friend."
"Just like yours, right, Lisa?" I teased.
"Deny it all you want, but he's hot." She narrowed her eyes at me with a mischievous smile.
"Okay, enough about anything work-related, including my boss."
"Has anyone seen Emily's brother?" Britney interrupted.
"Were you interested in him?" Lisa asked her.
"No! But I haven't seen him yet. And Emy said the party won't start until he arrives. But... I can't deny he's hot. Are you going to deny it, Lisa?"
"He's like family to me. But yes, he's hot."
"A real hottie!" Britney sighed.
Rachel, Ashley, and I just laughed as we watched the two of them.
A while later, Emily returned, accompanied by someone I assumed was her brother. Not only because of the resemblance between them but also because he was exactly what Britney had said.
"I found him!" Emily said.
"Hello, ladies! I hope you're having fun."
"Hi, Bryan!" Lisa said without much interest. Britney greeted him with a kiss on the cheek. Rachel said 'hi' without moving from her spot. After Emily introduced Ashley to her brother, she turned to me.
"Ah! And this is Kate!"
"A pleasure, Kate!"
I suppose I should have said, 'The pleasure is mine.' But I didn't, just gazing at him and accepting the offered hand. He had blue eyes, perfectly styled blonde hair, and was wearing black jeans and a white dress shirt with the top buttons open.
Suddenly, the lights dimmed, giving way to colorful lights that moved frenetically. Everyone turned to the small stage in the corner when a spotlight focused on the DJ. He congratulated the birthday girl, making everyone applaud Emily.
I noticed movement behind us at the bar. When I looked back again, I realized Bryan was staring at me. He smiled when he realized he was caught. A wonderful smile. The girls turned their attention back to our group.
"Yay! The bar is open for business!" Lisa started walking towards the bar behind us. "What are you waiting for?"
The girls followed her. I turned to do the same, but I was stopped. Bryan held my hand, smiling, and getting even closer.
"Don't you want to see the house, Kate?"
"What?"
I hardly knew him. Why would he want to show me the house?
"Actually, I'd rather have a drink." I pulled my hand away, intending to head to the bar.
At that moment, loud electronic music started playing. The girls were already at the bar. Lisa laughed, looking at me, while Emily whispered something in her ear, making her laugh even more.
Britney watched us, while Rachel and Ashley already had drinks in hand. Bryan pulled me gently, forcing me to face him.
"Come with me." He started walking in the opposite direction of the bar, but I made him stop.
"I'm serious! I prefer to have a drink!" I shouted over the music. What a persistent guy.
"Alright! I'll take you to have a drink!"
"But the bar..."
"Come on!"
He held my hand and started walking through the crowd, and I just gave up resisting.
